The only gripes about Abreu were 1. why the 3rd year 2. it feels very unAstros. The majority (including myself) loved the deal. But the fanbase shouldn't be held to the standard of the general manager or acting general manager.

Agreed. I think most fans were in favor. But I wonder if Lunhow and his geeks would have considered his 2022 a harbinger for the future. His power was down significantly

Yep, and if you look at '22 even closer you see the trend getting worse month by month. I suppose it's at least fair to wonder if the Astros targeted him for power. If they did they either were unaware of the trend, or ignored thinking it was an off year.

The third year was always the problem. Even before he became the worst everyday player in the league. He was already 36 (allegedly) and that's a lot of money to tie up for a likely retirement year or two.

If he was on a two-year deal, the conversation about cutting bait in whatever form necessary to preserve a repeat shot this year wouldn't be so dicey.

Bellinger (history aside) would be a nice add due to his punishment of righties and his OF/1B flexibility.

I can't help but think we need to take advantage of Chas's plus glove and absolute destruction of LHP to pair him with a LH LF bat. Now that he is in the last year of his deal, what about Charlie Blackmon, who still punishes RHP? It seems like he could form a nice LF platoon with Chas if CF is handed to Jake.

Sadly, Uncle Mike would be the PERFECT LH Side of a platoon with Chas, but I have to think his shoulder is Bagwell in 2005 done at this point, as much as that saddens me.

We've had a lot of great ideas about platoons over the past three years. Dusty hasn't actually executed a single one of them.

Chas is historically (and still in this season as well), much better against lefties. He only has 25 PAs against lefties this year compared to 90 PAs against righties.

Doesn't matter how we build the team if he refuses to play them how they were designed to be played. When looking at when guys need days off, Dusty doesn't sequence or look at matchups. He just does what he wants/feels. He may be great interpersonally and a great leader since all the players seem to like him, but damn he is a moron with statistics.

And now I'm pissed off all over again after looking that up.

Blackmon is a Coors Field special I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

He was on a 3 year $50 million deal. So we paid him more for the same timeframe for worse results?

Not sure if you saw our posts yesterday, but Farmer and I posted comparisons to Chas facing lefties vs. Mike Piazza and Juan Gonzalez facing lefties and righties.

When facing lefties, Chas' career numbers are very similar to Piazza's career numbers against everyone and slightly better than Juan Gonzalez.

It's absolutely inexcusable that Chas ever sits against a lefty.

I think the air around the ball fears his bat more than the ball itself does!

Yes, the improper usage of platoon splits under Dusty is a clear elephant in the room if you are Dana Brown.

If you could actually count on Dusty to use Diaz effectively between C and 1B on days he is not behind the plate, Bellinger could be a perfect add flexing between 1B and OF.

Agreed. Just went back and read them.

We have 16 games against a lefty starter for the other team. Chas has started 10 of them. 6 games may not seem like a lot, but that is 37.5% of the time he is on the bench. Julks has limited stats on splits obviously but has started 8 times against lefty starters. I don't know a good way to track PH opportunities against lefties when someone like Maldy is up to bat late in the game.

Right now, any lineup against lefties should include Chas and Dubon (huge splits this year in obviously limited samples).

I thought that was too much Montero, but I am not giving up on him. He is has been fairly solid at home and horrible on the road. It is a confidence head issue I believe and he can still be effective.

In general everyone in the BP has struggled here and their lately.

The insane part about Chas and his splits is you know the nerds and front office know this and you know they feed this info to Dusty and he just defiantly ignores it. He's literally making a poor tactical decision on purpose.

Pretty good line up, would be pretty perfect with Diaz but I think to be fair Frambino likes Maldy. Not that it would matter

Right.

In 2022 Abreu's EV was 92.2 (top 7%) & HH% was 51.8% (top 3 %). LA was down, but it can be attributed to slightly fewer fly balls, lower pop ups, and more line drives. Nothing screams decline coming IMO. If anything he probably was "unlucky" in 2022 when it came to SLG.

Then you break it down by month, was there a downward trend?

Looks like he had a rough July, but nothing crazy.

The only real trend I could find was a decline in BB% after the first half of the year. Overall he had a near career high in BB%.

This is speculation on my part but I have a feeling there's some sort of nagging injury with Abreu.

He was crushing the baseball this spring. It's just so weird.

@txag2015 are reports like this really just fluff, if his situation is as ominous as you make it sound? I know he's gonna do everything he can to make it back, but I just never know what to make of these reports.

Who returns and pitches for the Astros first? Lance or Whitley?

The only thing I know is that the front office is approaching the deadline as if Brantley won't play a role this year. They aren't counting on him.

I've been assuming this is bad news as far as his return goes. But I suppose it's possible that they just don't want to rely on an older guy who can't seem to get right.

Also, I know I'm stating the obvious, but taking nice and easy swings in the batting cage is still pretty far off from playing in a game. So we'll see.

Depending on the odds, I'd lay substantial money on neither.

This lines up with what I said a while back. They're going to be aggressive for both, but a bat is the biggest priority for them.
