I'm expecting a low scoring affair tomorrow against the dude with a 6.50 era. I'll be at the game Tuesday and Steele has a 1.82 ERA so probably score about 5-6 off him.

Yanier's home run was the difference

Looking back at Abreu's swing in 2020 (MVP year)... it looks like he's always been fairly quiet in his lower body but definitely much more leg back then than his slap approach this year...

Apparently he used to be able to pull a fastball.

so the Rays (31-11) went 4-3 in their 7-game stretch vs. the Yankees (over the past 10 days)

keeping the bombers at arm's length in the AL East standings --- 8 games back

Our next 12 are Cubs, As, Brewers, As. Framber-Javier get Cubs & Brewers. The As suck. No reason we can't go 8-4 or better. 29-23 puts .500 ball in the rear view.

Yep - agree with this - and so would the Rangers. They've had 12 games against A's and Royals.

Correct move but we all know Dusty aint doing that
He is stubborn and won't do it as quickly as he should, but he will do the right thing eventually if Abreu keeps hitting like this.

I don't know if I can remember a guy that's supposed to be a hitter (i.e. not Maldy or Brad Ausmuff) ever have a slump this bad for this long. Other than guys who just fell off the cliff hard at the end of their career. Which I am now genuinely afraid is what this is.

Gallo & Belli might be decent comps to slugger turned zero turned decent again. They're younger than Jose.
As you know I have always been higher on Gallo than most, but he's a career .200 hitter.

Bellinger is a far better comp but he was only good for three years to start his career and then had injuries, so that's a little more explainable.

Abreu was a .290 hitter with power for a decade straight and not that he didn't have highs and lows, but was about as steady as they come & then just absolutely lost all of his power at the end of May 2022…He only has 1 HR in 350+ ABs since early August of last year!!!

Show me any true power hitter ever who has gone 350 ABs with 1 HR. I might be wrong, but I don't think you're going to find that anywhere in history.

I took your challenge and thought maybe I could find a true power hitter who hung on too long at the end of his career. Guys like Kiner and Mize. But no luck, nothing close.

So then I looked at Astro players of my youth. I didn't consider guys like Roger Metzger who hardly ever hit home runs even in their prime. The closest I could come was light hitting catcher Johnny Edwards. One year with the Astros he had one HR in 317 ABs.

Y'all worry about whoever. I'm worried about Deluxe. He hasn't been seen in a few weeks now. I even PM him and nothing. He was 10x the poster of 99% of y'all.

Gilbert shows up at #96! Might be some movement up as the summer moves along.
Quote:

Drew Gilbert, a first-rounder last year, has already climbed to Double-A in his first full season and is flashing a bit more pop than expected -- a positive sign for a player with 55 hit and run grades.

Altuve finally got a hit tonight for the Space Cowboys. Solid 1 for 13 on the weekend

No posts since 4/20. Maybe had a real bender and is still recovering?

seriously, though, I hope all our Astros friends are doing well.

I noticed I haven't seen Deluxe either. Hope they both are doing ok.

So the hack who broke Jose's thumb decided to get stupid today against the Phillies and got into it with Harper. Both gots tossed. He threw 1.0 IP, 8 strikes and 12 balls. Sounds like he was in WBC form.

Daniel Bard hit Altuve, not Bird. Either way, fun times. I like the jawing at Harper but Bird didn't seem like he really wanted any back stepping to the dugout.

speaking of Cody Bellinger...

he will bring an .834 OPS to MMP

has 17 x-base hits and 9 steals on the season

I guess he has made some changes. This is basically a contract year for him

Harper is truly becoming a philly with his attitude. I liked the guy in Washington, less so in Philly and even less as time goes on

IMO, the front office needs to prepare as if Brantley is out for the year and make moves accordingly. If he comes back, great what a bonus. But plan as if he's not

I would add another starter or long reliever to the list in addition to Garcia. Not sure who, but a swing guy that doesn't cost a ton would be great. The team can go bullpen day on occasion.

What guy, that wouldn't cost a ton, would be an upgrade over what we have?

Bielak - 3 games (2 starts and one bullpen appearance in the first)
  • 4 IP, 2 ER
  • 4.2 IP, 2 ER
  • 5.0 IP, 1 ER
3.29 ERA, 5.79 FIP (too many walks, not enough Ks)

France - 2 games (both starts)
  • 5.0 IP, 0 ER
  • 6.2 IP, 1 ER
0.77 ERA, 3.81 FIP

I don't think these two will be able to continue at this pace, but I could see them giving us 4.00 & 5.20 ERAs & 3.67 & 5.65 FIPs with around 5 IP per start. [those are Garcia & Urquidy's #s] That would be enough right?

Then we have Blanco being built up plus Urquidy & LMJ rehabbing.

this should've been the mentality from the start.

I believe this was his third surgery on the same shoulder? He's old. They should've known better than to throw all there eggs in that basket. But then again the "moves" Mr. Bagwell made in the offseason shows this is right on par.

The Brantley signing wasn't supposed to be crucial. Problem is Altuve got hurt, Bregman is struggling and Abreu dropped off a cliff so now we are desperate.

This. Brantley should be a semi-platoon, veteran presence, who is the 5th to 7th best bat.

Pena hasn't taken that next step either. edit: has been fine, slightly better. No major jump.

Alavez being Alvarsz and Tucker being good, not great is about all that has gone right offensively. I would put Chas in the positive, but it was only a few games before the injury.

so a semi platoon 5th to 7th best bat, who many think deserves to have the #2 spot in the batting order locked down?

In terms of how Dusty builds the lineup, sure.

He was 5th on the team last in year in wRC+ (min 100 PA)

You don't lose anyone. Alvarez, Altuve, Bregman, & Tucker are all younger to much younger. He's a year older. You add Abreu. You hope Chas or Jeremy get better. 5th-7th sounds about right.

It might surprise you but a batting order isnt a ranking system but in fact a mixture of hitter profiles on how to be most effective.

Bregman was always a 'chip on his shoulder' kind of player. It seems the big contract, a wife and child, and business interests have removed the chip. He doesn't even make solid contact much anymore. His swing can't be any more simple than it is, so this may be who he is now. A slow start period is over. Ditto this for Abreu, who's swing is just awful. Maldy has a better swing.

no *****

my point was being if he's considered the 5th best hitter on this team his ass needs to be in the lineup every day considering our crappy offense. you don't platoon one of the better hitters right now with this lineup considering how miserable it is in it's current state.

but it doesn't matter because he's hurt.

Regarding Brantley, similar to what Farmer posted about pitchers, what options are out there that are not very expensive and are a measurable upgrade over what Julks has been giving? Or even Chas if Jake continues playing well in CF?

I'm all for improving the lineup, but the lack of Brantley is easier to cover than the black hole we're dealing with in the form of Jose Abreu.
