It might surprise you but a batting order isnt a ranking system but in fact a mixture of hitter profiles on how to be most effective.
no *****

my point was being if he's considered the 5th best hitter on this team his ass needs to be in the lineup every day considering our crappy offense.
Since 2020

Vs LHP - 75 wRC+
Vs RHP - 125 wRC+

Jake

Vs LHP - 117
Vs RHP - 75

Chas

vs LHP - 155
Vs RHP - 94

Don't you think an OF of Chas and Jake vs LHP would make more sense than playing Brantley daily?

you platoon chas/jake and let brantley DH if/when he comes back. With it being his right shoulder and the already dragged out recovery you limit his throwing and let him swing the bat.

You definitely hit the target when you said "it doesn't matter." Both b/c he's hurt and b/c we all know Dusty doesn't care about splits.

What are you platooning them based on?

Do you not see than both Jake and Chas have been better than Brantley vs lefties?

platooning them based on the hypothetical if Brantley were to come back healthy and mash. IF he was able to do that you platoon Chas/Jake, (I dont care what the #'s since 2020 are).

You give Brantley the shot though if he comes back to bat everyday though imo, but if he struggles sit him for sure against LH.

Personally, if he does comes back I expect little to no positive contributions from him.

now that the series vs. the White Sox is over...

2023 is year 1 of Benintendi's 5-year contract with Chicago...and the pale hose may be regretting it already.

like many players...he has lost his power. Zero home runs in 146 at-bats. Slugging .336 and OPS of .667

Interesting note from 790 just now: the Astros have 15 games where they have scored 3 runs or less. Record in those games is 2-13.

Not a surprising statistic, but we are going to be just fine if we can score the major league average of 4 to 5 runs per game.

This is why I'm not panicking. There is no way that Abreu and Bregman continue to be this bad for an entire season. I absolutely refuse to believe it.

Record in one run games is 4-3 and in blowouts (5+ run margin) is 7-3. Those ratios are mostly similar to the last half decade. We just have to make it to the other side of this offensive slump, as we have in the past.

I'm speculating here, but I wonder how amenable Abreu is with coaches regarding any tweaks to his swing or if he's just stubborn and unwilling to change anything especially during the season. Maybe that's not what is needed in his case, but Pena and lately Meyers have benefitted from it.

Based on the quotes from the Rome article back in late April, I would say Abreu is working his ass off and willing to adjust as needed.

But looking at 2020 (MVP) vs now not a ton has changed.

Bregman was always a 'chip on his shoulder' kind of player. It seems the big contract, a wife and child, and business interests have removed the chip. He doesn't even make solid contact much anymore. His swing can't be any more simple than it is, so this may be who he is now. A slow start period is over. Ditto this for Abreu, who's swing is just awful. Maldy has a better swing.
I've seen this said before. But there was a lot of comments last year about how much better Bregman was after having the kid. Even in the beginning of this season people were making jokes that Bregman needed to have another kid.

He's just not performing. Simple as that.

Except he's extremely late. When you look at the still photos from point of contact, he's way off balance.

So the question begs...is it father time, an unknown injury, or a mechanical issue?

Agreed. His 2020 swing fires as soon as his front foot hits the ground. Now he's a split second delayed. Hands might be in a slightly different spot too. I kind of wish we had a view from the side to compare.

If I had to guess it's probably a little of both. Father Time is undefeated, but 36 year olds don't go from very very good to one of the worst in baseball.

Wasn't there an article or something a while back where he said it wasn't a mechanical issue and Cintron said that it was...id say that's not a great sign for working with coaches to get better
cc10106
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah the delay is apparent in that comparison. A couple things that stand out are for me are the initial toe tap being later which would seemingly set up his timing for everything, and the other is his posture where he's already crouched on the left as opposed to more straight up on the right.

The last ones left on the active 26 man with a goose egg in the HR column:

Abreu
Dubon
Salazar.

Add in Jose and Mike when (or if?) they return.

Who gets off the list next?

I'll bet $10 that Jose gets his first. Hell, I'll bet $10 that someone not on this list gets one before Captain Lou Abreu gets one.

IMO, the front office needs to prepare as if Brantley is out for the year and make moves accordingly. If he comes back, great what a bonus. But plan as if he's not

I would add another starter or long reliever to the list in addition to Garcia. Not sure who, but a swing guy that doesn't cost a ton would be great. The team can go bullpen day on occasion.
What guy, that wouldn't cost a ton, would be an upgrade over what we have?

Bielak - 3 games (2 starts and one bullpen appearance in the first)
  • 4 IP, 2 ER
  • 4.2 IP, 2 ER
  • 5.0 IP, 1 ER
3.29 ERA, 5.79 FIP (too many walks, not enough Ks)

France - 2 games (both starts)
  • 5.0 IP, 0 ER
  • 6.2 IP, 1 ER
0.77 ERA, 3.81 FIP

I don't think these two will be able to continue at this pace, but I could see them giving us 4.00 & 5.20 ERAs & 3.67 & 5.65 FIPs with around 5 IP per start. [those are Garcia & Urquidy's #s] That would be enough right?

Then we have Blanco being built up plus Urquidy & LMJ rehabbing.

No, I don't think relying on Brandon Bielak in any way is enough for a team looking to repeat and I'm surprised that you actually tried to justify it. I have no idea what France will do, and I doubt the Astros do either. Maybe he will be great, or maybe not, but he's a 28 year old rookie with a career minor league WHIP greater than 1.300. Does that flash longterm big league success? Hard to tell right now. Blanco might be a guy that comes on, but so far he's boasting a 1.917 WHIP and has produced one (as in singular) clean inning in all appearances this year.

So, not to argue with King Stats, but I most definitely do not think that would be enough based on what we know today. Throw in the offensive struggles (the original reference to Brantley's absence kind of alluded to my point here) and it might have to be our pitching that saves the day. Maybe it's not a Verlander or Graveman addition that Brown pulls off, and it might not need to be. We'll see, but standing pat with Bielak as a critical component? Come on.

As for specific guys, I haven't done any research. I'll look into it and see if someone jumps out. I'm sure Brown is doing his homework regardless of LMJ or Urquidy's rehab progress.
