I wasn't able to watch the game last night but I did see Abreu hit the ball really hard a couple times. Nothing to show for it, but that's baseball. Definitely a good sign.

Did he look better at the plate mechanically?

Was there ever an explanation in the post game pressers on the mound visit fiasco? I'm still baffled that Dusty didn't at least shuffle out of the dugout and ask the umps what was going on - unless they knew internally that the ump was right? If there was any question though - he needed to get out there.

At the very least just let us know when you are going so we can sprinkle some $$ on the opposing money line....I was going to last night, but with HB on the bump I decided against it. Don't mess with a streak I guess

I read somewhere the ump said the scoreboard was wrong on the number of mound visits.

Wonder if Diaz will get to DH today. Since he had 2 of our 3 hits last night.
lol. good one. you already know the answer to that

Ah - thanks. I wonder when the ump told them that - I didn't see any communication between the Astros dugout and the ump on the broadcast - but they may have just not shown it.

Interesting thing I noticed last night at the game. His swing does look a bit strange. I don't know why. He does get his hips through though. For whatever reason on TV he looks all arms. Could be because it is a very short, fast swing.

I do hope he heats up soon. It is May 3 and Jose Abreu has zero home runs.
agree 100%. His swing looks like a big, strong man who's never played ball in his life and literally is just all arms trying to make contact. I dunno wtf has happened to that dude but he looks completely LOST at the plate.

I love sharing good news.

Check out MLB Filmroom

The filter and search options are great. Condensed games, highlights, etc.

I am not sure you can hit the ball 101.4 & 107.7 just by being a big man who swings with arms.

From our vantage point just slightly up the 3B line last night, his first AB still looked very much like that. Stone still lower half and just throwing his arms at it. He must've done something better in the next two.

Agree with the below though that he is also just getting beat. He was late on every pitch in that first AB.

Compare this to his RBI chopper 2 games ago. I am not going to pretend to be able to breakdown flaws in a big leaguers swing, but you can see a clear difference here.

1st of all, thanks for that film room link. That's awesome.

2nd, his swing looks ok to my really amateur eyes.

However, if I'm going to be at all critical...that one in the 2nd inning he probably missed a little. It was to the inside of middle and he probably should have been able to pull it. Maybe nothing more than just being patient enough to see the pitch well.

The really encouraging thing is the pitch was a slider, and previously he has been awful swinging at those

Yeah, his mechanics look SO much better from what I've seen so far this year.

Like I said yesterday... he's very close and those hard hit balls last night tell me he's probably already on his way out of the funk.

So, looking at that picture here is my breakdown. It's low and away, and he's trying to punch it opposite. That's why his hips and body are leaning more toward the first base side instead of opening up. He probably was out in front and rolled over his hands too soon.

"One of the worst teams in the league batting against the slider."

Great job, Cintron. Never would have guessed.
when Doval came in...Blummer said he had thrown 88% fastballs in his appearances.

but last night vs. the 'stros -- because it was the 'stros -- he switched to heavy slider usage.

and unfortunately it worked

Still blows my mind that Bregman hit 41 homeruns in 2019.

In 318 games since then, he has hit 44 home runs
watching the games...teams just won't / don't pitch him inside -- especially at MMP

they want him to hit the ball to RF & CF and he is obliging

Altuve needs to show him how to become a successful dead pull hitter

I know they've been working hard with him on not turning his head with his swing. I think the article Farmer posted yesterday from Chandler touched on that also. He looked a lot better yesterday and the results will come.

A lot of times the head turning can come from just trying too hard and thinking too much. It's like golf. The smallest thing in your mechanics can make the biggest difference. You have a bad hole or two (or in this case, a bad AB or two) and you start thinking. And when you start thinking, you get in trouble.

Abreu is as professional as they come and this is all mechanical. I don't think it has anything to do with age or ability. April has always been a hard month for him so combine that with the pressure of being on a new team (not to mention a reigning world champion team) and it's understandably been tough.

It looks like to me he's just about out of the woods and I expect a scorching hot next 30ish days from him.

back to Abreu...

for all the discussion about arms and legs and mechanics...

how does that explain 4 walks in 127 plate appearances ?

is the scouting report now: "just pump in the fastball"

last year he walked 62 times --- once every 11 plate appearances

Knowing what we know about our lefty sluggers, is there anyway to check and see how many homers that Yordan and Tucker would have had if the dimensions of right field were the same as left field? Put the Crawford boxes in right field, and does Yordan get another 10-15 dingers a year?

I would hope that the excuse the Maldy needs to start because he has such a good relationship with the pitchers will change now that we will have two new starters for the foreseeable future who don't have a relationship with Maldy.

He can catch Javier and Framber. Diaz can catch Brown and the two new replacements.

There really is no more good reasoning other than maybe prep work for each game's pitcher/batters. Obviously, I have no idea how Diaz ranks there. What I do know is he's a better hitter and (at worst) it's a push on the actual catching metrics.

Maldy can still the prep and tell Diaz what to execute. We also have how many pitching coaches and other staffers to do that work?

It's getting quite ridiculous how significant the favor is for other teams on a pretty frequent basis.
