It's cloudy and overcast this afternoon in Houston with a current temp of 82. Such weird decisions on when they open the roof.

It'll be between 72-79 during the game with no sun beating down or chance of rain. If you're stuck in a seat in the sun with no air wind, 82 can feel like 92 real quick.

Rickey is the best lead off hitter of all time. Threat to steal second and third every time he was on base - and that's if he didn't hit it out of the park - I believe he leads MLB in lead off homers.

And the best John Olerud story of all time.

So not to be too much of a downer, but if Abreu keeps playing the way he is, does his deal do Carlos Lee-like damage to our line-up?

In 2025 we have Altuve and Bregman as free agents and Valdez and Tucker likely getting big chunks of cash, and Garcia likely making decent money as well, it seems like it's going to be hard to keep Altuve and Bregman with all the other commitments we have.

Crane has made it clear that Altuve and Bregman are lifers as Astros

What's funny is like two days ago I wasn't watching but following on here. Jake got about 10 comments in an early inning for something defensively. Two innings later Tucker did something allowing a batter to stretch a single to a double. One person made a slight comment

Jake in the OF is a great example of your eyes notice what you want to see and complain about (not you specifically just people in general)

Jake plays OF and looks boring because he covers more ground while another fielder might have to make a diving catch on the same ball.

No not even close

IIRC his deal was under market value. They did a good job getting that done early in the offseason before shlt hit the fan as far as the contracts handed out are concerned.

I remember sitting back reading what FAs were getting thinking to myself 'Man that Abreu deal doesn't look too bad'. Plus it's only for 3 years.

Hardly a boat anchor and nowhere near a Carlos Lee sized boat anchor.

Does this mean you're going to let us know hours eary when we know Urkeeding and Garcia injury status?

seems like Bregman is going to have to take a hefty paycut if we keep him. I'm all over pre-covid Bregman, but if he keeps playing like post-covid Bregman, there's no way we can give him $30,000,000+ a year.

It'll be clear when he writes the check. Until then, its muddy for me.

I'll give you muddy on Bregman but Altuve seems very certain to be a lifer.

Crane doesn't seem like he has loyalty to anyone. I think that's just him saying what he thinks everyone wants to hear. It'll be interesting to see what happens in regards to who gets a deal and who doesn't.

He had loyalty to JV but once it got to a certain price point, it's just business.

Gotta let the baseball ops people put together a presentation of just how good Tucker can be over an eight year deal and hope he relents. (Or hope we have more prospects in the pipeline, I guess)

I can agree with that. But a lot of decisions will need to be made between now and the end of 2025.

Altuve
Bregman
Abreu
Pressly twice
Brantley
Neris twice
Maldonado
Stanek
Maton
Valdez
Tucker
Urquidy
Taylor
Dubon

Yes, not a board anchor but most questioned the 3 year length. That's not revisionist history.

Forecast is showing 30% chance of rain between 5-8pm. My phone just dinged with a thunderstorm warning for 6pm. I'm not sure of the xPRECIP+ rating on that but we had plenty of sunny comfortable game days in April for open roof games, but tonight?

Haha... unsurprisingly the Astros keep injuries under wraps so I really don't have any intel there.

I don't believe Framber or Tucker get extended. I think we will offer a very team friendly deal which will upset them probably and they'll be gone. And in the OF sadly that's probably going to be smart business with what we have in minors currently

That or Gage is just a fresh arm to help the BP until it Urquidy's turn in the rotation.

Ricky Henderson had like 25 years of 70+ steals. And I think 3 over 160. Completely unfathomable in the context of today's game.
I want to see Rickey run with bigger bases and being limited to only two pickoffs. He's the most prolific base stealer and run scorer in history (and also hit almost 300 HRs).

But all of this is wrong... he never had anything close to 160 steals. The 130 in 1982 was his high water mark.

He played 25 years total, and many of them were below 70 steals. He only had 7 years above 70 (which is still amazing).
Yeah I didn't state that right. I just posted something ludicrous I thought I remembered without looking it up on the way to lunch. The nuggets I tried to recall but failed spectacularly are:

He averaged nearly 60 bases a year over his 25 year career (so, not 70 a year...)
And he had 3 years over 100. Including 1 year over 130 with 170 attempts

As you say, still absolutely jawdropping and without need of any exaggeration whatsoever.

He attempted a steal over 60% of the times he reached first or second base that year.

In 1998 he walked 118 times and stole 66 bases at the age of 39.

Bregman's OPS the last 3 months of baseball:

August 2022 ---> 1.133 red hot

September 2022 ---> .692

April 2023 ------------> .697

he's not making it easy for the front office

May 2nd and I think I've decided Abreu needs to be on the bench vs LHP (which is so backwards)

40 PA vs LHP - .105/.150/.132

compare against

84 PA vs RHP - .296/.321/.333, though he strikes out at a much higher rate vs RHP (27% of ABs)
