I think y'all are nuts. If Maldy called it and Abreu trusted him to do it, then they're the dumbest players in baseball and we deserved to lose last night.

Agreed. I cannot imagine a single team in a pivotal game 5 of the ALCS would put two runners on with none out in the 8th in a two-run game. Much less one that's been in seven straight ALCSes. Thinking otherwise literally just demands suspension of disbelief to me.

I've seen JV say in multiple interviews that even he wasn't mad Garcia pimped it, he understood the moment. Why pick now and not Spring Training to make a point about it, assuming anyone else even cared?
After thinking long and hard and rewatching the 5 pitch walk to Carter where two of the "balls" were actually strikes I've come to the conclusion that we were trying to brush Garcia back but Abreu lost a bit of control so there was SOME intent.

However, I still cannot fathom purposefully hitting a guy to put a runner in scoring position in a 2 run game in an ALCS series tied 2-2 against a team WHO WAS THE FIRST EVER TO HAVE MORE BLOWN SAVES THAN SAVES.

So for those saying Abreu simply lost his grip...wrong. And for those saying he wanted to hit him to start some magical chain of events...wrong.

They wanted to brush him back and ended up hitting him instead.
Yea. Like many of these situations, a few things can be true at the same time.

On one hand, from a game strategy standpoint, of course it would be dumb to give the Rangers a free baserunner in that circumstance. First/second no one out, late in a game that we still have a chance to win.

On the other hand, it's a little far-fetched to think that Abreu (who's so damn good) just happened to miss by THAT much against THAT guy in THAT situation.

I agree that we tried to go up and in and brush him back. But I do think we were trying to bait a reaction out of him. The goal wasn't to retaliate (although we knew it would be perceived that way). It was to spark a 15 minute sequence of events to ice LeClerc. I checked my DVR yesterday... about 23 minutes passed between LeClerc's final pitch in the 8th and his first pitch in the 9th.

Actually plunking Garcia was almost certainly an accident because just going up and in and brushing him back would have served the same purpose. He's a loose cannon and easily provokable.

I sincerely hope that MMP gives Garcia a huge standing ovation tonight when he comes to the plate for the first time. Cheer and clap through the entire AB.
The average fans (which exist everywhere, not just in Houston) don't have the ability for this sort of irony
I'd also love to see it but I agree. I'm pretty sure the average fan is gonna greet him with a chorus of boos.

Remind me, who was the losing pitcher when Astros won 2021 ALCS series in Game 6, who also happened to win Game 2?

I'll just give my Debbie Downer expectation and get it out of the way. I have no faith in this team at home, and Framber is a headcase that can explode at any moment. I don't see that as a good combination, but I will be ecstatic to be proven wrong. He's certainly pitched well in big games before. Hopefully that psychologist worked overtime this past week.

This is where I'm at. We could lose both of these games based upon recent track record at home.

Yep, that too. The one thing he has going for him is Alex Cora isn't trying to use him as a closer between starts.

Sure, we could. We could also win by double digits today.

Framber is gonna give us 6 innings of 2 run ball while we hang 6 on the Rangers.

Either way I'm gonna get drunk so I win no matter what.
Unfortunately, 2 innings of 6 run ball is more likely based on his recent outings. Hope he breaks the pattern tonight.

Still annoyed by this double standard

The most obvious difference is Leclerc didn't hit Dubon, but the real reason is that Dubon didn't throw a tantrum. The point is valid because it turns out punitive action is wholly determined based on what the batter apparently believes about the pitcher's intent.

Was it the same pitcher who also lost game 4 of that series and yielded 5 home runs to the Astros in one inning in a game last year.

I think it's bad for the game that if someone pimps a HR, the pitcher facing him in subsequent ABs has to be conscious that any inside pitch is going to be perceived as retaliatory.

If Dubon had pimped a HR earlier in the game/series and the same thing happened, maybe LeClerc gets the boot too. But it's sad you only get that benefit of the doubt if you're a showboat.

I'd add Wagner. If you haven't realized it by now, a stellar BP can win you the WS.
Anyone that would want to add Wagner to a playoff team better look up his playoff stats. They were horrible. ERA at 10 with many appearances. This is a big reason I dont think he should be in the hall of fame. When it came to crunch time in his role in the biggest games, he usually folded. This is not like a hitter who can be pitched around. He was a closer and had one role. Now, he should be in the hall of very good. But best of the best..... not in my mind.

They could bean Altuve in the head the first pitch of the game tonight, and the league would just say "well, you should have moved".

Going back to game 5….I know the importance of tuckers ab to knock out Chapman has been stated….

But….what about leaving Chas in with the bases loaded. We all, myself included, wanted Brantley to ph. Now, maybe he comes through and kills the rangers spirits. But maybe he does exactly what Chas does and everything else plays out the same. Chapman probably stays in to face Brantley vs getting pulled with Chas on deck. Then leclerc wouldn't have been asked to throw 1+ innings.

Now, did dusty foresee this whole scenario? Of course not. But I would guess he kept Chas in because he figured there'd be a chance for him to see Chapman later…..

Are we gonna see the game 3 lineup? I imagine so with eovaldi being a RH.

Altuve
Brantley
Bregman
Alvarez
Abreu
Tucker
Dubon
Peña
Maldy

I hope we stick with the same lineup, only Brantley for Chas. This has been the most productive offensive lineup. It would be very dusty to try and mix it up.

Abreu said as much in the post game. The plan was to push it up and in, and it got a little too much in. You never know fully what's in a player's mind, but to me if you're gonna hit a guy on purpose you throw at his butt.
The way MLB is acting there is only one thing left to do, win this motherf***er AT HOME tonight and THEN win the entire f***ing World Series AT HOME and at the trophy presentation boo Manfred so loudly that not a single word from that ****sucker's mouth can be heard except through closed captioning.

If Garcia didnt throw a fit and just took his base, Abreu would have stayed in and finished the inning.

But… it wouldn't have woken the bear and snowballed into Altuve dropping his huevos on their face to win the game

Anyone have the stats on how many times the rangers have hit an Astros batter?

I know the worst was on Yordans return this summer. Maybe his first game back. They act like they never throw at our guys. Such a double standard.

So we are the Oakland/LA/Las Vegas Raiders of MLB. Long-standing friction between an organization and the league, and it's not surprising but extremely unprofessional that Rob Manfred came out and made public his regrets that he didn't punish the Astros more aggressively (nobody else mind you…just the Astros). Embrace the hate.

I just hope that, at some point, Altuve (as a player and human being) is recognized for who he is to his teammates and to us as fans. Steady, humble and on the Mount Rushmore of MLB second baseman of all time.

The leash will be short. In the event he gives up early runs, I'd imagine that the next bit of trouble he gets in then we'd get him out. And backing him up will most likely be France, IMO.
Ideal scenario is obviously Framber pitching a gem. But in the event that we only get 3-4 innings out of him, then you're hoping for 2-3 from France to lead you into the bullpen.
