The Astros wanted José Abreu in 2013 but didn’t get him. Ten years later, Abreu is finally an Astro – and is replacing the countryman who arrived three years after he did and became the face of Houston’s Cuban pipeline: https://t.co/qUEnQ7110M

The Astros have optioned Matt Gage to minor league camp. Dusty Baker said they will not carry a lefthanded reliever to open the season.

Dusty Baker all but confirmed today that Michael Brantley will begin the season on the injured list.

The Astros’ bullpen probably shapes up like this:

Ryan Pressly
Ryne Stanek
Phil Maton
Rafael Montero
Bryan Abreu
Héctor Neris
Seth Martinez
Ronel Blanco

So 6 man rotation to start with Brown and Urquidy pulling up the rear?

This reminds me of in the mid-1990s when Tony Barone would tell the media that Damon Johnson was the "best 6'4 power forward in the country."Mathguy64 said:
Pen depth is massive right now.
I've said it before. I'll say it again. Phil Maton is the best #6 arm in all of MLB.
I think Maton figured something out in the 2nd half of last year they didn't exactly show up in the normal stats.Mathguy64 said:

Yes as a 20-year-old student sportswriter at the time, it was incredibly hard not to retort "That's probably because he's the only 6-4 power forward."Marvin said:The Porkchop Express said:This reminds me of in the mid-1990s when Tony Barone would tell the media that Damon Johnson was the "best 6'4 power forward in the country."Mathguy64 said:

I heard this in a Dennis Miller voice, like one of his random analogies.

I don't like this. I love our BP guys but we need more lefties if we can get some.EastCoastAgNc said:The Astros have optioned Matt Gage to minor league camp. Dusty Baker said they will not carry a lefthanded reliever to open the season.

I think it's more to do with the fact that Hispanic people love baseball but the Astros are so damn expensive that the AAA team is a lot more of an attainable ticket without going broke for middle class / working class families.Bregxit said:
Hispanic influence in Sugar Land? When did that happen? Why not be the Cricketeers and honor the Indian influence?
No one's alt unis will ever trump San Antonio's though.

I'd like a lefty, but with this bullpen, I don't think it's a big deal at all.
This current bullpen handles lefties very, very well. It's the least of my concerns going into this season.
And Jeremy makes sense in the 2 hole too.bearkatag15 said:

is it really only about defense at 2B for Dusty? The Porkchop Express said:
Yesterday John and Lance on 97.5 were offering counseling for people who think that Dusty is going to give Hensley a chance over Dubon at 2B.
