Ditto. I don't think it's the best thing, but I think it's the most likely scenario.CoachRTM said:
I feel like we're going to overpay for Verlander - I think Crane wants him to retire (and go into Cooperstown) as an Astro, and that would be a big feather in his hat.
Once that happens, we piecemeal the rest of the roster together on cheap deals and essentially run it back.

If you're the GM, which deals are you doing? All? None?
Astros prospect Luis Baez was named to the Dominican Summer League All-Star Team. The outfielder posted a .903 OPS with nine home runs, 43 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

but Bregman and Tucker seem like an either/or --- not going to be able to keep both of them (in part because of Framber)
I would feel better about paying Tucker $30 MM per than Bregman.
the month of August saved Bregman's season stats in a big, big way. He was not close to being a $30 MM player in the other 5 months of the year

The baseball media is so coast biased. It's worse in baseball than any other sport. The Astros have been not only pissing in the coastal teams cheerios, but they've been honking dirt snakes right into their milk cups too.
Just think man, the Astros have ended the Yankees and Red Sox season so many times. Took down their beloved Dodgers in 2017.
Then they have the sign stealing scandal which gave them the right to make up for the sins of media past by not going hard enough against the steroid scandal (which involved many Yankees, remember? It wasn't just Mark McGwire).
I love the Houston vs the world mentality. It isn't a made up fantasy to rally the troops. It's a real thing. And they can all
That being said. I take any major publication's writings about the Astros with a grain of salt the size of the empire state building.

I can confirm their fans are complete dicks.
Quote:
Multiple people familiar with Crane's thinking said he's set something of a limit in negotiations with Verlander. An exact dollar amount is unclear people familiar with Crane's thinking peg it around two years with anywhere from $30 to $35 million average annual value. This is not to suggest Crane won't exceed these figures, but it's where some around him said he is, for now, settled.
Verlander won't command a contract of that length, but a three-year deal somewhere isn't out of the question. Many in the industry used Max Scherzer's contract as a rough blueprint for Verlander's next deal. If it comes, it's apparent it won't be from the Astros.
Crane has questioned the Scherzer contract privately, according to people who work with him, making it unlikely the owner would construct a similar one. Before last season, Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million deal that carried a $43.3 million average annual value.
Quote:
Houston has more urgent needs at first base and designated hitter. Crane may be more inclined to splurge there to upgrade an offense that, toward the end of the season, became too top-heavy and righthanded. The team has strong interest in Willson Contreras, people familiar with Crane's thinking said. First baseman Anthony Rizzo has emerged as a top target, too, according to The Athletic.

Where are we at on Tyler Ivey these days.
I ask mainly because his father is a friend of mine going back a number of years. Also, Tyler has a younger brother, Jake, who will probably be a better prospect. He's in 8th grade and is a LHP that throws gas.
