The line about Bagwell being critical of the Astros development system is weird. Probably a lot of missing context, but still. I love Bags but don't particularly want him as the number one guy in Crane's ear.

I mentioned this on the in-season thread, but a buddy of mine golfs with someone "in the know" and indicated that AJ Hinch has been tossed around as potential GM. Doesn't mean its going to happen, but it has been considered to some degree. It balances an analytic minded person, former player, and player centric individual.

I absolutely don't think it happens, but its offseason so I'm throwing this out there again.

And that led to over paying aging stars and giving Matt Maloney a Bobby Bonilla like contract and never winning anything again.

Guys like Passan think their long tenure can let them get away with writing a 1,000 word column featuring exactly one quote by 1 anonymous source.

That's not journalism, it's just speculation - taking the parts of facts that help you prove your point and spinning them together into a directional assumption.

He acts like Crane taking more control of the team since 2020 is a terrible thing - so that's ALCS, WS, WS? Seems like an OK series of results to me! Crane is way off from Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones gift-wrapped the Texans' their first victory ever with his dumb ass drafting skills. He's cost them more wins than all of our collective fingers and toes.

the real capper was Kelvin Cato's $42 million contract for getting a triple double in the preseason.

thats how its seems to me also. he knows the window will close soon. win another one before that happens appears to be his goal.
I don't understand why the window has to close. We have lots of under control young talent, including darn near a full staff of starters plus key pieces (Yordan, Peña) locked up for years to come. The beauty of the analytics based system Lunhow and Click ran was that we continued to identify and develop talent at a very high rate vs the industry. That was and still is the secret sauce to keeping the window open. If Crane is moving away from analytics that would be a big head scratcher for me.
I shouldn't say window close, more that this core will likely be done.

Bregman and Altuve have two years left, do both come back? Altuve will. What does that mean for Tucker?

Bregman has already said he wants to be an Astro for life. I think his wife being from here is also a big deal for them.

I was working with the Rockets during the Francis/Yao/TMac era. There were a lot of questionable signings going on and money being thrown away. I loved Mo Taylor but even the money he was receiving was highway robbery. Considering I first met Dream in 81 when he first got here and following his career, there was no more frustrating time to love the Rockets than 99-2009.

Does give you a better negotiating spot than someone that does not want to be here or has no ties. I don't see Alex popping on a different hat 2 minutes after a game ends.

Hypothetical scenario. Altuve, Bregman, & Tucker get to free agency. Here are the deals needed to be done to keep them. Normal projections for each, no major changes. Tucker is young and gets slightly better. Bregman is in his prime and stays similar to his 2022 season. Altuve is aging, but it is still well above avg.

Altuve 3/48 (35-37)
Brgeman 6/180 (31-36)
Tucker 7/200 (29-35)

If you're the GM, which deals are you doing? All? None?

Is this reality? Are we really wondering if the most successful owner in Houston sports history is the problem?

The same person who said the New York Yankees were, by themselves, the top tier of baseball 4 months ago is now saying other stupid *****

That's it. That's all this is. We will be fine.
I think we're fine too, but did you think Drayton would do what he did after those mid-90s teams made it to the post-season so many times and ran into the buzzsaw Braves?

I would do the Altuve deal.

Altuve - I just think he'll still hit at ages 35-37. Honestly, there is some aspect of not wanting to seem him on another team, but it's like 5%.

I'm just not sure Bregman's power will be there when we gets closer to 35.

Tucker would be on the back side of prime, and I'm not sure I want to give him 7 years when he's 29. However, if you offer him that deal this year when he's 26, I'd do it for sure.

I don't know if I want to commit 7 years to him at age 29. I'd rather just do that deal with him now at 26.

Tucker is really going to depend on how dominant Pedro Leon becomes. I don't see paying for Tucker if there's another young stud in OF.

If we don't pay for Tucker, I expect we'll pay for Bregman.

Altuve is re-signed either way until he's ready to retire.

The baseball media is so coast biased. It's worse in baseball than any other sport. The Astros have been not only pissing in the coastal teams cheerios, but they've been honking dirt snakes right into their milk cups too.

Just think man, the Astros have ended the Yankees and Red Sox season so many times. Took down their beloved Dodgers in 2017.

Then they have the sign stealing scandal which gave them the right to make up for the sins of media past by not going hard enough against the steroid scandal (which involved many Yankees, remember? It wasn't just Mark McGwire).

I love the Houston vs the world mentality. It isn't a made up fantasy to rally the troops. It's a real thing. And they can all

That being said. I take any major publication's writings about the Astros with a grain of salt the size of the empire state building.

Id rather sign Brantley, Yuli, mancini, and Vasquez than make a splash this off-season.

Reevaluate at trade deadline, I don't see juice in the market, I see liability. Keep the culture, rely on the pitching for now.
Harry Dunne

I have to admit that when Toro & Frisbee Joe turned into Chipper Jones and Kent Tekulve the rest of that season for them and Graveman wasn't as dominant once he came over, I thought this might have not been a great trade.

You've got to give Click his due.

The article title is how the Astros struggled for control. I don't think they're struggling with it, it's pretty clear who is in control.

If all of those guys would all return for reasonable amounts on short deals then I'm with you 100%. Here are their spotrac market values:

Mike: 2/$32M (16)
Yuli: 1/$11.5
Mancini: 5/$90 (18)
Vazquez: 3/$20 (6.7)

Mike and Vazquez are worth every penny. Yuli I feel like you've got to give him one more year and I bet he signs for less than that.

Mancini, hell no. In 1200 PA since coming back from cancer, he's got a .735 OPS, which is about league average and probably below league average for 1b/Corner OF. I would have been Ok with the mutual option but a longer deal with him through is 30s could turn out very badly.

Rizzo: 3/64 (21.5)

Spotrac may be way off, but if it's even reasonably accurate there's no way you can do Mancini for a longer deal at not much less annually than Rizzo.

No disrespect to Mancini as I know he's been through a lot.

God may strike me down for saying this but I don't want him back even if he's playing for free.

You're fine saying that.

Everyone has respect for cancer survivors and Mancini seems like a great guy even independently from that...but that doesn't compel you to want him back.

I have like 4 or 5 shirts from Breaking T. It's a legit site. They also sell their stuff in Academy
