I feel like we're going to overpay for Verlander - I think Crane wants him to retire (and go into Cooperstown) as an Astro, and that would be a big feather in his hat.

Once that happens, we piecemeal the rest of the roster together on cheap deals and essentially run it back.

Ditto. I don't think it's the best thing, but I think it's the most likely scenario.

Altuve 3/48 (35-37)
Brgeman 6/180 (31-36)
Tucker 7/200 (29-35)

If you're the GM, which deals are you doing? All? None?
Altuve will retire an Astro.

but Bregman and Tucker seem like an either/or --- not going to be able to keep both of them (in part because of Framber)

I would feel better about paying Tucker $30 MM per than Bregman.

the month of August saved Bregman's season stats in a big, big way. He was not close to being a $30 MM player in the other 5 months of the year

Here is a name to file away. Luis Baez, an 18-year-old signed in 2021.

We've already had this conversation.

Bregman was elite elite in Aug, but also very good in June, solid in Mar/Apr, and not bad in Jul. His only "down" months were May & Sept/Oct where he was still above avg. Then there's the postseason where he was 4th in hits, 2nd in doubles, 7th in HRs, 4th in RBI, 12th in R, 4th in OPS (min 30 ABs).

He was top 20 in WAR and top 5 in WAR for 3rd baseman. 1 month aint gunna do that.

he's a f***ing drama queen. a glorified HR lady.

Of all the people to put a quote like this in writing...ole dbag Jeff Passan...

No, this was something darker. Arrogance, intimidation and a contemptible sort of nastiness. Something the organization easily could have disavowed. Instead, it tried to spin it -- and whirled itself into a corner from which there is no extrication.

Arrogance, nastiness and spin? Oh bless your little heart Jeffrey Passan.

The baseball media is so coast biased. It's worse in baseball than any other sport. The Astros have been not only pissing in the coastal teams cheerios, but they've been honking dirt snakes right into their milk cups too.

Just think man, the Astros have ended the Yankees and Red Sox season so many times. Took down their beloved Dodgers in 2017.

Then they have the sign stealing scandal which gave them the right to make up for the sins of media past by not going hard enough against the steroid scandal (which involved many Yankees, remember? It wasn't just Mark McGwire).

I love the Houston vs the world mentality. It isn't a made up fantasy to rally the troops. It's a real thing. And they can all

That being said. I take any major publication's writings about the Astros with a grain of salt the size of the empire state building.

I had pretty much convinced myself you are Farmer1906's sock when he wants to debate himself... and then you go and post this.

Quote:

Multiple people familiar with Crane's thinking said he's set something of a limit in negotiations with Verlander. An exact dollar amount is unclear people familiar with Crane's thinking peg it around two years with anywhere from $30 to $35 million average annual value. This is not to suggest Crane won't exceed these figures, but it's where some around him said he is, for now, settled.

Verlander won't command a contract of that length, but a three-year deal somewhere isn't out of the question. Many in the industry used Max Scherzer's contract as a rough blueprint for Verlander's next deal. If it comes, it's apparent it won't be from the Astros.

Crane has questioned the Scherzer contract privately, according to people who work with him, making it unlikely the owner would construct a similar one. Before last season, Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million deal that carried a $43.3 million average annual value.
Quote:

Houston has more urgent needs at first base and designated hitter. Crane may be more inclined to splurge there to upgrade an offense that, toward the end of the season, became too top-heavy and righthanded. The team has strong interest in Willson Contreras, people familiar with Crane's thinking said. First baseman Anthony Rizzo has emerged as a top target, too, according to The Athletic.

Here is one of his past hit pieces:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28477741/why-anger-boiling-scenes-houston-astros-sign-stealing-punishments

The entire sanctimonious attitude from that grundle-munch and the supposedly aggrieved teams/fanbases is infuriating. They damn well know for absolute fact that the entire reason the Astros weren't punished more severely was because if Manfred and his merry band of idiots did try to come down harder on the players every single one of them would turn rat like that rat-fink pedo Fiers and burn baseball to the ground. They have the proof. They gave it to the league. We know without a doubt the Red Sox cheated in 2018 and the Yankees did the same and not a damned peep out of anybody.

So fck them all. Fck them right in their fcking suck-holes.

Liars, hypocrites, and cnt-clumps, the lot of them.

The weather didn't really bother me up there, in fact I liked living up there. Of course was 2007-2011 before they went full blown nuts, but going to the field every month and living outside for 10-14 days a time was fine.

Where are we at on Tyler Ivey these days.

I ask mainly because his father is a friend of mine going back a number of years. Also, Tyler has a younger brother, Jake, who will probably be a better prospect. He's in 8th grade and is a LHP that throws gas.

I dont know where he stands with the astros, but was caught off guard when he transferred out. Always wondered if there was something going on there.

OPS undervalues one of Bregman's best attributes, getting on base.

League Avg wOBA - .310

Some Astros for Scale
Alvarez - .427
Altuve - .397
Tucker - .348
Pena - .309
Gurriel - .285

Mar/April - .347
May - .317
June - .366
July - .333
Aug - .471
Sept/Oct - .312

You can scoop out 2 ~30 game windows where Bregamn was avg. I think if you look at most guys they all go through it. Alvarez .289 in Aug. Tucker was .292 in Mar/Apr & .270 in Jul.

He had a minor injury, got some arm fatigue, and got sort of sideways with Childress and didn't think Childress would offer him the opportunity to get back to the rotation. The basic gist was that Childress sort of froze him out and forgot about him when he went down.
