6 seasons (really 4 + covid + this one but who is counting).
$116.4MM
92 HR
231 RBI
752 K
A cumulative BA over those seasons of .169

He ended his 2020 season with a -12 wRC+. Try and wrap your head around that. A + stat is a normalized league average stat. It cannot be negative. And yet his was.

Matt Chapman's line today? 0 for 1 with 3 runs score, 5 walks, and a strikeout in Oaktown's 17-0 win over the Indians of the Galaxy.

Joey "Moonlight" Gallo has just struck out at Field of Dreams to re-tie Chapman at 148. Yankees only have one more AB, down 7-4, so he'll need a big rally to get up again.

Wow, Yankees hit a pair of 2-run dongs in the top of the 9th to go up 8-7. Joey got up and choked, drawing a walk.

What a badass game. MLB couldn't have asked for more. Figured it would've had its own thread.

Javier Baez has gone on the 10-day DL for the Mets. Retroactive to August 12, meaning he'll miss at least 8 more games.

That's close to a death blow for his chances in the strikeout chase. Joey Gallo, the Sword of the Morning, was off last night after the Field of Dreams game, and Matt Chapman didn't strikeout, leaving these two collossuses .. Collosi? Collosisms? astride the lead together at 148 each.

Baez had 145, but he'll likely lose that spot and the NL lead to Eugenio Suarez (142) in the days to come.

Shohei Ohtani is creeping up as well, and appears to be hitting the dog days hard, with only 1 home run in August, but 13 strikeouts in 37 at-bats; he's up to 137 whiffs on the year.

Joey Giantsbane is the first man in MLB to 150 strikeouts and has taken back a 1 whiff lead over Matt Chapman.

He's on pace for 209 strikeouts.

BREAKING NEWS: Joey Gallo has achieved the Golden Sombrero today vs. the White Sox! Looking in the first, swinging in the 4th, 6th, and 8th. If the White Sox could get 2 runs, he might get another at-bat.

The landmark achievement has him up to 154 strikeouts through 117 games. That's a pace of 213. THE CHASE IS ON!

200+ strikeouts is really an amazing achievement. You've got to suck, but not so much that you get benched or sent down to the minors. You can't even get too many off days to work on your swing. It's a very fine line you have to walk.

Was it technically a golden sombrero today? I'm not really sure what the exact definition is. Is it just four strikeouts? Or is it 0-4 with four strikeouts? I always thought it's the latter, but I'm not positive. Gallo did get a hit today

According to baseball reference it's just the accumulation of strikeouts in a game. Going hitless would be taking the collar in addition to whichever sombrero was adorned.

When I used to write about HS football in the 90s, we had a non-public LVP (Least Valuable Player) award we kept track of week by week in the city and it was the same way; you had to be a player who was terrible enough to constantly be making mistakes but not be so terrible that you got replaced. It was that same fine line.

BREAKING NEWS: Justin Upton struck out twice tonight to tie Willie Stargell for 8th on the all-time whiff list! Each of these titans now has 1,936 strikeouts for their career.

The difference is that Stargell needed 21 seasons to get there. He was quite prolific for his time, however. He struck out at least 100 times in 12 straight seasons, including a league-best 154 in 1971. Granted he also hit .295 that year with 48 home runs, 125 RBI, and a 1.026 OPS. He didn't win the MVP, however, because that's the year that Joe Torre sold his soul to Satan in exchange for the best year of his life - hitting .363 with 24 HR and 137 RBI. Not to go on too much of a detour, but that was Torre's career-best average by 38 points and his career high in RBI by 28. That's devil worship at work.

Stargell was actually the career leader in strikeouts from 1978-1981. He took the mantle from MIckey Mantle (ba-dum-bum) in 1978. Mantle finished with 1,710. Stargell got the record all the way to 1,912 at the end of 1981 before Reggie Jackson came soaring past him ion his way to 2,597.

Justin Upton also struck out 100 times or more 12 times in a row before getting hurt in 2019 and only making it to 78. He's never led the league in whiffs, but man he's consistent! His high is 180, but he's had six other seasons with at least 152.

The ride isn't over for Justin, however. He's just six strikeouts short of Jose Canseco for 7th on the list.

Three more whiffs for Joey Gallo today. He's up to 159 on the year, has a 6-whiff lead over Matt Chapman, and his pace up to 214.65 strikeouts. To quote my second favorite 1980s Apple IIE video game, he is a Warrior of Destiny.

What an August Joey is having! 32 strikeouts for the month and it's only August 19th. His high for a month this season is 40 back in April. He has struck out 32 times in 63 at-bats this month - that's 50.8% of the time. To quote the guy who is working the amber mine at the beginning of Jurassic Park (new this week on HBO/Max) - "Que lindo esssssss."

Since July 1, he's been up 129 times and struck out 62 times compared to getting 22 hits. Twenty-two for 129, that's a very sweet .171 batting average for 7 weeks of work. It was incredible when he was doing that for the Rangers; it's even more amazing now that he's with the Yankees. He's a cool 11 for 71 with the Yankees - .155 - with 35 strikeouts.

And the best part of it is that the Yankees are white-hot, they are 16 and 4 since trading for him, which means they're going to keep trotting him out there day after day, and there's a powerfully strong chance America will fall in love with Joey Gallo all over again when he is striking out in prime time in the playoffs come October.

Joey is now tied for 544th place all-time with 832 strikeouts with former Angel Chone Figgins, who I saw play one night against Baltimore in 2005 on the day that Rafael Palmeiro got busted for 'roids. Figgins was part of that great Angels squad with Garrett Anderson, Vladimir Guerrero, Bartolo Colon, and my former high school classmate Jeff DeVanon, who somehow managed to attend Bellaire High School despite literally living across the street from Westbury High School in Southwest Houston.

Joey Sunshine threw up another hat trick tonight for the Bronx Bombers. And yet they won again.

He is now 12 for 75 since the trade (.160) with 38 strikeouts. The Yankees are 17-4 since the trade.

He's up to 163 for the season with 40 games to go. His pace is up to 216, 7 short of Reynolds' record.

History is on the move, my fellow Gallo-nauts. You can either be part of it by getting on the Gallowagon right now, or sit on the sidelines and wonder what might have been.

Actually, for a three true outcome player like Gallo, strikeouts are better than hits. Since joining the Yankees, he has:

75 AB
4 HR
16 BB
38 SO

That's a 3 True Outcome Average of .773. I'm guess he leads the league in that average since the trade. Right now, the Yankees are probably trying to figure out what is the most number of years they can pay Gallo. They don't like to be outdone by the Orioles and Mets.

Injuries and opportunities have always been the name of the game in sports. We're seeing it all unfold in the great strikeout race of 2021.

Two weeks ago, Joey G was playing for the bronze, struggling to keep up with Matt Chapman and Javier Baez. Now Baez has gotten hurt and Chapman has decided to start trying to actually hit the ball and Joey has taken advantage of the power void.

Last 7 Days

Joey Gallo: 8 games played, 29 at-bats, 5 hits, 18 strikeouts, whiff rate: 62.0%, batting average: .172

Matt Chapman: 7 games played, 24 at-bats, 9 hits, 9 strikeouts, whiff rate: 37.5%, batting average: .375

Javier Baez: Has not played since August 10.

Eugenio Suarez: With Mike Moustakas back on the Reds after a long heel injury, the team has done the inconceivable and benched Eugenio Suarez. It doesn't make any sense - the guy is in the top 146 players in the league with his ..172 batting average. Thus, he has only played 3 games in the last week, getting 7 at bats, getting 0 hits (bravo) and striking out twice. Since last Saturday, he's only recorded 3 at-bats. The RIP Eugenio Suarez's worst season in MLB history, gone too soon.

With Baez (145 Ks) hurt and Suarez (144 Ks) benched, it leaves a weird power void at the top of the NL. The next guy up is Willy Adames (134) who got traded from Tampa to Milwaukee at the trade deadline. After him is LA's Chris Tylor (131). We've gone from an epic race to no race in the NL. Hopefully Baez can turn it around soon.

Just a few more spectacular Joey #s

In the last 2 weeks he's struck out 30 times in 52 at-bats while hitting .135.
He's been up 106 times with the count 3-2. He's drawn 45 walks and struck out 47 times. And gotten 4 hits. Batting average: .066 in that situation.
When the count is 0-2, his average is .059. 28 strikeouts in 34 at-bats.

When Joey comes up 2-3 strikeouts short of the record, you can lay the blame at the feet of Brett Boone for giving him a GD day off Saturday and messing up his white hot streak.

After his ill-advised day off and Henri's cancelling of the Sunday game, Joey Joe Joe was back in full effect Monday with 2 whiffs. And the Yankees won again, making me think back to Ruben Sierra's old mantra "If you want to win, put Ruben in."

The Yankees have won 10 in a row and are now 20-4 since acquiring the Man Who Would Be Mark. He's up to 168 strikeouts, an 8-whiff lead over Matt Chapman. Nobody else is within 19 of Late Night with Joey Gallo. His pace right now is 217.78. The Yankees have played 125 games, they've got 37 to go.

How dominant has he been? Noted teammate whiffers Judge and Stanton are on pace to strike out 156 and 154 times this year. Joey already has more than that right now.

In the NL, Javier Baez came back from his injury and promptly struck out, proving the time off was worth it. He's up to 146, but has been passed in the overall standings by Ohtani (149), and Joey's Ranger teammate Adolis
Garcia, who has clearly tried to take on the mantle left by Joey's depature.

But much like when Ultra Magnus tried to take the Matrix of Leadership for the Autobots after Optimus Prime's untimely death in the 1986 Academy Award winning movie, Transformers: The Movie, Garcia is finding that not so easy does the crown rest.

In the all-time category, Justin Upton struck out twice last night to surpass Jose Canseco for 7th place on the all-time whiff list. He's up to 1,943 for his career. He won't have enough time to get to 2,000 this year, but it's a virtual lock early in 2022.

A moment then, for Jose Canseco, one of the most incredibly gifted athletes (both pre-steroids and with steroids) we've ever seen. A physical freak long the lines of Magic Johnson, Bo Jackson, and LeBron James - 6 feet 4 inches, 240 pound freak.

In his first three full seasons, he hit 33, 31, and 42 home runs, drove in 117, 113, and 124 runs, had the 40-40 season, and of course, for our money, struck out 175, 157, and 128 times.
Of course, had the steroid issues, and struggled mightily to stay healthy, especially after the Ranges traded, ironically, Sierra for him. Had a remarkable comeback year in '98 with 46 HR that largely went unnoticed because of McGwire and Sosa, and fell short of the 500-home mark by 38.

Lost in Gibson's heroics of the '88 World Series was the fact that Canseco - the 40-40 man and AL MVP - was horrific, hitting .053 with 1 homer.

Once his tell-all book and all the steroid stuff came out, he was officially persona-non grata in baseball. he was first eligible for the HOF in 2007, the year Ripen got 98.5% of the vote and Gwnn got 97.6% - further proof that some baseball writers should be taken out back and have their legs broken for not voting for those two. In that first year of eligibility, Canseco with 462 career HR, an MVP, and 7 All-Star games got 1.1% of the vote.

I forget this until someone like Fat Bib unknowingly picks off the scab but I am still so very bitter and hurt from this movie. How could they do that to Optimus? Why did they? Who are these writers that intentionally killed the hero of so many adolescent boys of the 80s? I want to hurt them back.
