The world continues to go coo-coo crazy as the race for the strikeout record continues.

Confirming our worst fears, Matt Chapman of the A's struck out twice last night to jump Joey Gallo in the Reynolds' Race. Chapman has tied Javier Baez at 80 strikeouts for the season.
Baez hasn't played since Sunday due to a right thumb contusion that his manager says is making it difficult for him to swing the bat. Uh, what's the problem here? Look at his numbers, he's had trouble swinging the bat for his entire career!

Even worse, the Rangers won yesterday without Joey Gallo playing. What if their manager, whose name I keep forgetting, so let's call him Manager X, decides there's some sort of direct correlation between Gallo on the bench and Rangers getting a win? What if he starts thinking that Joey on another TEAM would turn the Rangers around entirely?

It's this sort of thing that keeps me up late at nights.

On the bright side, I noticed yesterday that along with his 80 whiffs, Baez has a remarkable walk total of SEVEN.
Joey Joe Joe has 46, the second-most in the majors. Baez has SEVEN in 54 games. As of right now, he's on pace for 209 strikeouts and 18 walks this season, which I'm sure will lead me on a wild goose chase this afternoon of strikeout/walk disparity in a single season. That would be 191 more strikeouts than walks, no way anyone's done better than that, right?

Why is this update coming at 5:29 a.m.? Well for one reason, the smoke alarm in our play room went off 50 minutes ago and nobody can figure out why.

But secondly, and vastly more important, I've recently learned that Joey Gallo was removed from Wednesday's game with right groin tightness and is listed as day-to-day. Now look, we've all had our fair share of groin tightness. I experienced it for the first time at age 9 in 1983 when my parents took me to see National Lampoon's Vacation and this came on the screen.

Now Joey Gallo probably got his groin tightness because he's the only guy on the Rangers with balls big enough to go after a record like this strikeout deal. After criticizing him the last few days, I realize he's been in agony trying to swing and miss and as a result he's in a bit of a K slump. So I'm going to need some able-bodied Ranger fan to get up there and give the guy some groin relief STAT.

The K race has its third leader in three days. Matt Chapman is suddenly pulling a Katy Perry and coming at you like a dark horse. He piled on 2 strikeouts in 4 at-bats last night in a loss to the Royals to up his ante to 82, taking the lead from the also slightly-injured Javier Baez.

The good news is that Joey should be back at it tonight, and the Rangers are in LA to play the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. If he can stay healthy, this is the kind of weekend where Joey gets back to business.
He's currently sitting on 751 strikeouts in 638rd place all time, one behind a guy named Kiki Cuyler. That's not pronounced "Kee Kee" like in that Drake song from a few years ago that made me want to punch people in the face, but actually "Ki Ki." See back then, your baseball nickname didn't come from something clever or silly, but rather to make fun of what was wrong with you.

Thus, you had a guy named Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown because as a kid he was feeding materials into the thresher on his farm, slipped, and accidentally fed his hand into the thing as well.

And that also produced Hazen "KiKi" Cuyler who had a stutter his whole life, and back in the 1920s and 30s, what was funnier than giving a guy a nickname based on his massive speech impediment?

Javier Baez is back in the Cubs' lineup today and already struck out to reach 81 on the season.

Baez just went full Highlander on this whole strikeout chase. 3 strikeouts in his first game back from a minor injury. Missing those Cardinal pitches like nobody's business. He's got the lead back at 83 whiffs heading into tonight.

You are a sad and pathetic man...

Gallo is a gold glove outfielder and by all accounts a really good guy. He also does what he's paid to do, which is get on base and try to hit the ball hard.

If you look around MLB this year you can find probably 30 to 40 guys more worthy of ridicule for their hitting inadequacy than Gallo. His 1.3 WAR so far puts him on pace for like a 3.0 season, perfectly fine and in line with his contract.

Joey Gallo is a TERRIBLE offensive baseball player. His OF defense is superb and he rightly earned a Gold Glove, but even then, with such limitations at the plate, up until maybe 2005 a player like that would be stuck in AA or AAA until he could at least hit .225 and at minimum consistently put the ball in play in key situations.

Too much of MLB is caught up in metrics, launch angle, exit velo, blah blah blah. People started looking at and valuing slugging % more as a way to measure offensive production value, and that is good. At least this year he is walking more, but bottom line just due to the nature of the game, batting avg. and OBP lead to RBIs, not slugging %, not launch angle and exit velo, etc. A team that has a lineup of single and 2B hitters will score more runs than a team with a few single hitters and a bunch of power guys like Gallo, but Gallo is just an extreme example.

He is frustrating mainly as it is indicative of the organization. He has worked hard to improve, is walking more, he wants to be a more consistent hitter, but that doesn't change the fact most of his ABs are comical and an absolute joke when he could just poke the ball down the 3B line and get on base, instead he just strikes out at a horrific rate.

True old school baseball players would laugh at the shift and then proceed to hit well over .300, maybe even higher. I don't care what they are trying in the minors, in MLB they will NEVER dictate to the teams and pass rules to alter or outlaw the shift or placement of players in the shift. Why? Because other than pitcher and catcher there are no defined positions in baseball. You could play with no infielders, you could play with no outfielders, you can play with 2 or 4 outfielders, you can play with 5 infielders, etc. MLB dictating anything about positions on defense or the shirt would be like the NFL dictating where safeties have to play, it is never going to happen, so Gallo better figure something out or the Rangers need to trade him for a bucket of BP balls and a broken bat.

I read the thread, it's a bunch of Astros fans digging on Gallo.

Yes he strikes out a ton.

Yes he's frustrating as all get out.

No he's not deserving of a 6 page thread chronicling his strike outs. The uniting factor that unites all of the guys that have managed to K 200 times in a year is that in spite of all of the strikeouts, they still managed to bring value to their teams. Because you have to be doing something positive to get enough plate appearances to whiff that many times.

When Reynolds set the record, he hit 44 HRs, drove in over 100 and had a WAR of 3.3 for the season.
Adam Dunn was an All Star the season he put up the 2nd most ever, hit 41 HRs and almost drove in 100.
Chris Davis put up 3.1 WAR and had 38 HRs and 84 RBIs in the third worst year ever.

Despite the huge strike out numbers, I'd rather have someone bringing something positive to the team rather than a scrub with a negative WAR.

This is a historically bad offensive start all across baseball and the 3 true outcomes approach has infected the game like the plague. Gallo is simply part of the system, not some huge statistical outlier. And, unlike some of the other guys who whiff a ton, he at least brings elite defense out to the field to compensate somewhat for his one dimensional offensive game.

(Disclaimer, I'd prefer a team of Tony Gwynns to a team of Joey Gallos any day of the week, but it seems like teams just aren't interested in finding those guys out there)

I'll admit I was here just for lols at first, but I'm legitimately invested the strikeout race now and following to see it unfold be it Joey, Baez, Chapman or other.

And to AggieEP's point, I don't think Joey sucks and I agree the only way he's catching Reynolds is being so productive in the other 2 true outcomes (+defense which Joey is a +RF) that you keep him in the lineup thus why it's an impressive feat imo.

WAR is a completely stupid and made up metric. What is the replacement was another Adolis Garcia?! Why do we need some fantasy WAR when there are games to actually watch with your eyes and see the player perform or not, especially in a game driven by an abundance of stats that can tell you how productive the player was to his teams success.

As for Judge in 2017, those Ks were offset by high BA, OBP, OPS, and RBIs. Judge had a lot of Ks in 2017, but otherwise had a ton of productive at-bats. Way to high a % Gallo either K, easy ground-out, or an occasional HT, but mostly unproductive plate appearances.

Joey had a very good 2019 but has regressed since then. He is a good teammate and a good guy from what I can tell, but if 2020 and 2021 to date is what his future is as a MLB player, that is not good enough for anyone over a rookie minimum contract IMHO, his defense in RF notwithstanding.

As Soul 2 Soul once said, Back to life, back to reality.

I'm happy to say that Joseph the Rooster was able to throw off the distractions provided by the thread today and has delivered a fantastic effort thus far tonight, 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, but vastly more important, his 81st strikeout of the season. He's narrowed the gap on AL leader Matt Chapman down to a single whiff. Chapman went an ungodly 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored on Saturday.

But for now, both Gallo and Chapman are merely the Pips, and Javier Baez is the Gladys Knight of the strikeout game. That's not the best metaphor, but it's 1230 AM and I'm old. What I mean by all this is that Baez struck out twice more on Saturday and that crazy SOB is up to 85 strikeouts on the year. He's got 13 strikeouts in 7 games so far in June. He's got his pace up to 215 for the season. He's somehow continuing to hit .236 through all this. And more importantly, by all accounts he is a really good guy

On a significant down slope in all this is my man Eugenio Suarez, who has hit the proverbial June swoon, just 6 strikeouts in 9 games in May. He's down to a pace of just 199 whiffs for the year, This is a not very well-known fact but when your pace for the year drops under 200, the other big K machine start to shun you.

It's like in X-Men: The Last Stand when Mystique breaks Magneto out of the moving jail transport thing but she accidentally gets shot by the reversal-mutant gun thing and she turns back into boring old, totally naked Rebecca Romijin. Magneto looks down and is like "Whatever, you're not one of us anymore." That's how Suarez had to feel when he didn't strike out Saturday and the ol' bean counter suddenly pegged him at a pace for 199. Suddenly his key to the executive strikeout wash room doesn't work anymore and Joey Gallo is ghosting him when Suarez calls wanting him to come over and play Strikeout Derby on MLB '21: The Show.

Sorry the update took so long tonight, wife and I sat down and got totally lost in the Holmes & Watson movie. MUST-SEE! How it didn't get some Oscar buzz, I'll never know.

Kind of a slow day today in the Reynolds Race. Joey didn't strike out. Baez didn't even play, but Matt Chapman scratched out a whiff to reach 83 on the season.

As you might have guessed, I'm a bit of a of a stat hound. That had me thinking of a new way to measure the best of the best when it comes to whiffs this year. I've concocted a little game that we'll be keeping track of the rest of the way called: The Strikeout Six Pack

The idea here is to take the top six guys in MLB in strikeouts and see if they can strikeout more than the team that strikeouts out the least. Currently that team is the Astros (clearly cheating), who have struck out just 468 times in 2,258 at-bats. The Mets are second with 482 strikeouts in 1,802 at-bats.

Will be checking on the Strikeout Six Pack every Sunday. The current legends in this group are Baez, Chapman, Gallo, Tampa's Brandon Lowe, my man Suarez, and Minnesota's Miguel Sano. These six dudes have struck out 479 times this year in combined 1,265 at-bats.

Yep, that's not a typo. The six best guys in the league at striking out, have done more than the Astros' entire roster. And they've gone it in 993 fewer at-bats.

Those same six guys have 3 fewer strikeouts than the Mets' entire roster in 537 fewer at bats.

As for the pursuit of more strikeouts than batting average points, quite frankly it's not going great. Joey Joe Jo is up to .220 on the year, and his strikeout pace is down to 201. That's not gonna cut it, brah.

Still on pace for this legendary performance however are Suarez, who is aiming at 199 strikeouts with a .171 average, and Sano, on pace for 187 strikeouts and a .185 average.

Checking in on Mark Reynolds back in 2009 is a pretty interesting thing. he had two legendary months. In May he struck out 46 times while still somehow hitting .271. But in September/October, he was freaking inspired. 46 strikeouts in 29 games with a .179 average. That'a finisher.
