Why? I imagine that's the way almost any normal would want to answer stupid repetitive sports reporter questions. Some just put more effort into BSing. Listen to some of those deep probing questions. "How do you prepare to pitch?" "Talk about about being in a potentially big game?" And these are regular beat reporters like Mark Berman.

People used to make fun of Biggio for his generic throw-away lines like "we just have to play our brand of baseball" or whatever, but I bet it gets old really quick to deal with the same reporters asking the same generic questions all the time.

We are at about $197MM versus a cap of $206MM. Next year Bregman starts hitting us for another $19MM, Greinke will start hitting us for another $20MM, Springer will be due another $18MM, Cole would require another $20+MM. Tucker will be due another $150k All other arbitration players will be a few million more.

This roster is not sustainable next year and trading away Reddick doesn't get us anywhere close to the numbers, there will have to be some changes.

(All of these numbers are very rough, so don't bash me too much)

Luxury cap is $208MM in 2020, $210MM in 2021 when Verlander's and Grienke's contracts come off the books. So in 2020 we pay the 20% first-time offenders tax + the 12% surtax for being $20MM-$40MM over the line and in 2021 we pay the 30% penalty + the 12% tax. 2022 we reset.

If Luhnow/Crane said "F%^* it" let's spend $250MM, their max penalty for 2020 is like $11MM. The tax for 2021 is $14.4MM. Two more rings, legit dynasty, for $25MM. If somehow we can keep the payroll under $228MM in 2020 and $230MM in 2021, then you save about $5MM in surtax.

Raise ticket prices, start a Stros/Rockets network, do $2 hot dog nights, quit spending so much on bobbleheads. Easy-peazy

FYI I just spoke with the bobbleheads and asked them for their opinion on letting Cole walk due to the money he would command and they are still shaking their heads yes.

Grienke and Verlander are under contract through 21, so they don't come off the books until 22. If you trade away Reddick, you are going to have to eat some money. If I remember right they tried to do that in the last off-season and couldn't find anyone interested. Same would be true with grienke but I can't see the Astros giving up all that they did and only keeping him for half a season. They would never get an equivalent return back. There only way to make a Cole deal work would be to go cheap on the front end of the contract and back load it when done bug money guys are off the book.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I consider signing Springer to an extension to be there highest priority this off-season. He's the heart of that locker room, and you can't let him go. He's worth whatever you have to pay him.

Thought someone said before that this wouldn't work since the contract is averaged out per year and that is how they count the money against the team each year

If you offloaded Greinke to keep Cole, then who cares. Worth it. And if we win the WS the Greinke trade was already worth it.

This has been said time and time again but offsetting the contract doesnt help with luxury tax. An average is used.
