I think it's imperative to lock up Cole simply from a standpoint of bodies. After this season our 1-4 starters will be FAs.

We could build a nice rotation McCullers, Whitley, Peacock, James, & JB/Martin.

I think we need to keep at least one of the two, being Verlander or Cole.

Pitching staff kinda feels like 1999 when we had long term uncertainty around Hampton, Lima and Reynolds but had Elarton, Oswalt, Miller, Redding and Hernandez in the queue.

I'm sure that if everyone's preference, but are we willing to commit to Cole for 180 M over 6 years (~25% up from what Corbin got).

That locks in 80 M between 3 guys. I'm not sure that is going to happen if the ownership believes in the young arms.

Agreed. I think it's more likely that we pay JV on a shorter deal than 6/180 for Cole.

We also have the ability to make trades or sign the 2019 version of Nate Eovaldi, which I'm sure we'd do if we miss on both Cole and JV.

Xavier was the reliever from the early 90s

I honestly didn't mean to refer to 1999 like it was a bad thing. We had five stud prospects and I feel like they didn't pan out horribly relative to an "average" case:

1 rotation anchor, HOF candidate stud - Oswalt
2 guys who got off to nice starts but couldn't sustain the grind - Elarton and Miller
1 bust - Redding
1 injury derailment - Hernandez

If someone offered me that result right now for Whitley, JBB, Martin, James and Perez, I probably wouldn't take it but it wouldn't be the end of the world if that's how it played out for the current five.

The good news for the current organization that Luhnow has built is that we have alot of depth beyond our five studs. Abreu, Armenteros, Valdez, Solis, Bielak and who knows what's possible for Martes post TJ. Between those 10-15 pitchers and acquiring some MLB level talent via trades/free agency, I think we could assemble a solid staff even if Cole/JV walk. With that said, I'd much rather keep at least one of Cole/JV... hopefully both.
