The game was already off reach. Hardaway sucks when it really matters, but good for him getting some practice shots in.

The Ticket is pretty much garbage these days, but they did make a point about all of the Boston fans booking travel and buying tickets to this game. We might get blown out in game 5, but there are a lot of Celtic fans walking around "downtown" Dallas right now and they are regretting their decision. That does make me smile a little bit.

Think they put up a stat that this is only the third team down 3-0 in the finals to win game 4? New York Knicks in 1951 and Cavs in 2017? Knicks forced Game 7. So I'm saying there's a 50% chance the Mavs force Game 7.

I don't think Boston minds losing tonight and I think they might have wanted to raise the trophy at home, but they didn't want to get embarrassed like this. Hell, they let Timmy get three straight 3's. That's bad and they should feel bad.

That definitely has all the makings of a classic dead cat bounce, but at least you don't get swept at home.

The next step is not getting snowballed early in game 5. Boston is going to come out with their hair on fire trying to end it early. If you can get game 5 to the 4th as a close game then doubt can start to creep in.

You could tell we put a butt load of energy in to this game. It was easy to do that with being at home in your own bed, hearing about how bad your effort was for 2 days straight, and the other team probably slipping mentally with a 3-0 lead.

You have to hope we can keep that energy up after travel and staying in a hotel. You also get 2 days of rest.

Boston May have shot poorly from 3, but almost all of their threes were really well contested by the Mavs. How much does that tire you out for the next one?

They were both being really aggressive and actively attacking the hoop. Without KP, this is how you win. Cant get in a 3pt shooting contest with boston

My bad yall. I watched 1 quarter of this game and it was the 3rd quarter. The 3 quarters I didn't watch, the Mavs were the better team.

I won't watch game 4 so we can win.

Didn't watch a second of this game until after it was over. I won't watch game 5 so we can win.

Mavs were down 11-10 before he hit that 3 and the Mavs never trailed again.

That looks like it is essentially a designed play for Lively. Lively goes to the corner and Mavs have everybody else cleared out and the Mavs knew Tatum would have to leave him open or allow Luka an easy drive. They wanted Tatum making a call on Lively.

Best part about the play is Luka didn't even have any kind of reaction to it. He's seen it a million times in practice, I bet.

Lively has been working on that shot all year at practice. It's going to be a weapon in the future and is a plan to mess with Wemby.

Way too much profanity in the video for me to post it here without getting banned, but go check out Barstool Sports' most recent Twitter post for some amazing footage of fan-on-fan violence from the Celtics' watch party last night. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

Game 4 shows if you have any pride. Game 5 shows if you're serious about making a run at it.

It was definitely by design

If Lively is actually serious about developing a jumpshot and can pull it off, his ceiling is a 20-10-5 guy. They'll be able to get him open looks whenever they want because nobody is gonna shade to Lively in the corner when the other option is letting Luka/Kyrie get somewhere they want to go without help.

Thj…5-7 from 3 for 15 pts in 12 mins and still only a +6, in a game we won by 40. That's the dude summed up in a single box score.

There isn't much to glean from his plus minus considering the final 15 minutes were a Lifetime pick up game.

The most important thing is that Kidd just sticks to the rotations he used in this game. Needs to be Exum and Green only going forward.

+/- is the most over quoted metric.

Hardaway entered the game with the Mavericks up 32 at the beginning of the 4th. By the time he hit his 5th 3 pointer the Mavericks were up 45, they got up 48 on a Hardy 3 with a Hardaway assist at the 6:50 mark and they got out scored by 10 the rest of the way because the game was more than over.

It doesn't make any sense to use it for the last 15 minutes of a game that was decided in the second quarter. But it can be telling.

I think the pendulum may have swung too far on it. It was used a lot and then it became the in thing to say it doesn't matter, when the truth is somewhere in the middle. If you bring it up in the right circumstance and with proper context then it can be a useful data point.
Infection_Ag11

It's a metric entirely dependent on sample size. +/- for single quarters doesn't tell you anything, and for single games it can only be useful in context and adjusted for other factors. As a raw metric in a vacuum in only becomes useful across at least a quarter of a season (20ish games).

For sure.

But also in the case of a normal regular season THJ game, it can tell you a lot. Sure he may have made 4 three pointers, but there is a giant reason he was an overall -5 or -10 in a close game. It's because his defensive rating in that game and for his career is approaching record heat temperatures.

The power these espn analysts have to create narratives and gaslight is out of control. Luka is very injured, and has been a majority of the playoffs. They create a "blow by" statistic nobody has ever seen before and claim his temper and wrecklessness cost him game 3. Although Luka does need to stop talking to the refs as much, the officiating in game 3 was up there with Sacramento/LA in the early 2000's. It was beyond horrendous. The refs completely ruined any chance the Mavs had at game 3 and the last two fouls against Luka were marginal at best and should never be called against a superstar. Luka was also hammered multiple times with no call. What superstar wouldn't be irate? Instead of discussing how biased the refs were, espn does damage control and blames Luka for the game and creates two days worth of Luka hate to distract everyone from what we all saw. . It was beyond reprehensible and unfair.

I thought all of Luka's fouls were fouls in game 3. The last one was close. If it was called a charge on the court then it would have stayed a charge. It was tough, but reasonable.

I do agree with you that he doesn't get the same whistle when he is shooting. That's his gripe 99% of the time. He's fine with being called for fouls as long as they are calling the same when he has the ball.

My friend and I have been wondering for 3 years now when Luka will start to get a superstar whistle.

I know the league has cleaned up a lot of the BS in the last few months, but if he got the same whistle 2019 James Harden did, then Luka would have probably averaged 40 points this year.

The fifth foul was absolutely not a foul on Luka. If anything, it was a hook on Jaylen brown. Kidd should have challenged that one. The sixth one was a foul by letter of the law, but even in a regular season game most refs would swallow the whistle.

The illegal screen on PJ in the backcourt was even more egregious.

Tim Legler focused on the officiating immediately after the game on sportsce tee. He must not have gotten the memo yet.

To quote Phil Jackson, "Yeah it's a foul but you don't call it on that guy".

Those are not fouls on a top 5 player in the last 5 minutes of an NBA Finals game. Period. If you're going to foul out the best player in the series in a close game it better be a foul that dramatically impacts the game, not contact initiated by the other player 25 feet from the basket. That sort of precedent is so well recognized in basketball that it needs no further explanation. Never in a million years is that called on Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, etc.

I'm not going to change my position for the sole reason that I'm also on a premium thread right now arguing that calls should be calls no matter what point in the game they are.

I didn't post this after game 3 in all of our discussion but I thought he posted a good couple highlights of ... ref inconsistency to put it nicely
In his replies to it he shows a no call screen for Boston early in the game abd then pj foul. It's good examples of of the refs changing in the game and weirdly calling it tighter later

I'm happy for all that were there. Looked like a great party.

You're right we probably won't win, but glad we didn't get swept and got to have one more celebration of a really fun and interesting season.
