I enjoyed doing this for Duncan over the years, so here you go:

Dirk legacy chase:
Games: 5th
* 5 to pass Malone for 4th
* 33 to pass Stockton for 3rd
* 89 to pass Kareem for 2nd

3 Pointers Made: 11th
* Joe Johnson is 10th with 60 more than Dirk, but made only 40 last year.
* 70 to pass Kidd at 9th
* 188 to pass Vince Carter at 8th. Vince says he is not retiring.
Dirk has been making about 115/year for the past 5 years.

Free Throws Made: 6th
* 126 to pass Jordan for 5th
Dirk is making just under 100FTs per year the last two years.

Rebounds: 27th
* 132 to pass Elgin Baylor for 26th
* 276 to pass Patrick Ewing for 25th
* 570 to pass Kevin Willis for 24th
* 623 to pass former Mavericks great player Dennis Rodman for 23rd
Dirk has been averaging about 450 rebounds a year for the past 5 years and had 438 last year.

Points: 6th
* 282 points to pass Wilt for 5th
* 1105 points to pass Jordan for 4th
* about 2500 points to pass Kobe for 3rd.
Dirk scored 927 points last year and 769 points the year before (54 games.) LeBron is only 150 points behind Dirk and is scoring about 2000 points/year.

Ugh

He's going to stiff the Mavericks again. I was hoping for capela or boogie.

As much as he left a bad impression last time around, I still think he could kill it in on a Carlisle coached team.

I'm crossing my fingers he ends up somewhere else.

What really hurt the mavs last time was they literally waited on him for 3 or 4 days to sign, he changed his mind at the last second, and all of the secondary options were signed / taken already.

Maybe give him a one day take it or leave it offer then move on, but they can't let him screw them again. I was hoping for cousins even tho he's a bonehead. Maybe that could still happen

Cousin's does at least have the possibility of growing out of the reputation he earned early on in his career. Why can't these bigs just all emulate Tyson Chandler. You can be a HUGE part of a championship team without being a focal point of the offense as a big.

To put it bluntly

I'd rather have a bonehead then a flake anyday of the week.

Capela would be the best get tho because he's neither of those things.

Would Cuban pursue DeAndre again (i.e what happened last time was business), or would he still feel jilted and tell DeAndre to pound sand?

In today's NBA, I'm not sure you can win by paying a center big money. I don't want to pay Deandre or Boogie. If all you need them to do is roll and catch lobs and play defense, you can find serviceable big men for much cheaper or can sometimes find them in later stages of the draft.

There are reports that the Mavs would be open to pursuing him. Don't think he's the first choice, but he's an option.

Agree 100% with not locking up big $$$ in either due to how the league has changed

Yea I just mean you don't need, and probably don't want, a typical 5 playing a big roll on offense in today's NBA. So if all you need is a lob catching, good screener and good defender, you can find them much cheaper than what you'd pay the high dollar centers.

Paying max or near max to a center completely kills your roster construction if you are trying to contend.

Pardon my ignorance, but do these "changes" in how championships are won stem from the Golden State model? Not being snarky, just tuning back in to the Mavs for the first time in a while.

Throw an offer sheet to Capela, but plan for whoever would be the less toxic of the two between DeAndre and Boogie. I'm over the DeAndre thing

I'd say it's a mix, as Carlisle's "flow-style" offense does fit more in line with how the league is progressing to position-less basketball with constant switching. And Doncic is perfect for that, which is no doubt why they targeted him specifically in this draft

It's not just golden state. Houston was the clear second best team in the league this year and they are constructed in much the same way. Capela is pretty good but they weren't paying him much. None of the top teams are paying centers. GS, Houston, Cleveland (they are paying Tristan but that's bc it didn't hurt their roster construction bc they could pay and not really affect the cap), Phili (not paying Embiid yet), Toronto, etc.

I'm not sure what the best team is who actually has a prototypical center that they are paying a lot is. But you have to go down a while. And if they have a high dollar center, they are usually rendered incapable of playing against GS. The one exception is Anthony Davis but he's more of a 4 than a 5. And we aren't signing an Anthony Davis type in free agency. Edit to add that Boston is paying Horford. But they have a ton of young talent on rookie deals so it's a little unusual.

The last team to win a championship with a center being paid big money? Duncan wasn't paid much the last spurs championship. Seems like you have to go back a ways to find one. In the super team era, the value of high dollar centers has cratered.

Horford is a 4 in my book anyways.

It sucks that we have to wait a week before free agency.

They passed on a lot of big men in both rounds of the draft, they better have something up their sleeves or mavs fans won't be happy.

Trotting Powell and Mehjri out there won't cut it.

If you want to see Doncic vs actual NBA players, here are highlights from when Real Madrid played the Thunder in an exhibition game in Oct 2016.

He was 17 at the time

Was doing that at 17! True teenage phenom like LeBron was. Seems a bit nuts that 4 NBA teams passed on him, but hey, Mavs fan base likely to grow now.

The Floor on this kid is probably 'good NBA starter'. Barring injury, almost certainly will be playing as a starter in NBA for a long time. And The Ceiling though...is Magic Johnson 2.0.

The thing I love about this pick is that Doncic has a ridiculously high floor. Hes a guy that can absolutely play in this league. Whether he's a future all star or HoF'er, whatever. But I have no doubt he'll be a long time nba contributor. Can't wait to see how he develops and what Carlisle does with him!

So he wore 7 in europe, but is wearing 77 because Dwight Powell wears 7..and i guess isn't giving it up.

that seems dumb

I know both he and Manu are international and he seems to have some Manu-ish flair to his game, but physically he looks very different to me than how Manu looked coming into the league. Manu was wiry and probably more bouncy than Doncic. Doncic though is 6'8" and 230 lbs...he is built like a Tank already at age 19. His overall physical build and some of how he moved in those highlights actually reminds me more of a young Magic Johnson than a Ginobili.

Ginobilii frustrated the hell out of me watching those early 2000s series with his play creation more than anything. The guy could finish at the rim, but he was/is incredible fitting the ball in windows for other players. He had/has one of the best bounce passes I've ever seen. It helps when you play with Tim Duncan, but he was feeding jams to dudes like Nesterovic and Bonner for a dozen years.

Admittedly, what I've seen of Luka is highlight reels, but I love the dudes passing game. You're right though. He has a couple inches and 30 pounds on Manu. That being said, if he sniffs Manu's career, I'll be ecstatic since Manu is a HOFer for sure.

I like a lot of what Sefko says. However, I can't see Wes Matthews coming off the bench because of how insistent he is on starting- it's like some weird disease for him. So if he ain't coming off the bench, and Carlisle projects Doncic as a starter...what does the starting five look like, especially if they get a free-agent center?
