In their 50-year franchise history, the Rockets have finished with over 55 wins three times.

The Rockets have never won 60 games in 50 years.

The Rockets have won their division once in the past 20 years.

Spurs have 17 seasons with over 55 wins (and were on track in both lockout seasons to win over 55).

Spurs have 9 seasons with a winning percentage over 73% with in the last 20 years. Rockets have never won 73% of their games.
Pretty specific stats.
73% = the cutoff for 60 wins in an 82 game season.

55 wins: Only teams that didn't win 55+ and still won the title since the modern NBA (added 3pt line, Bird/Magic join the league) are:

06 Heat - starting lineup missed 68 games to injury, won 52
04 Pistons - made big trade for Sheed and went 20-4 to close out the season at 54 wins
95 Rockets - 47 wins. Lowest win total by a champion. Had lots of injuries and the Clyde trade during the season

Bottom line, if you aren't winning over 55 games, you probably aren't a legitimate challenger for the title except for some unique circumstances like a blockbuster mid-season trade or major injuries during the season.

Teams with 60+ wins are even more likely to win it all and it is a mark that a team doesn't reach every single year.
Here are some more stats:

  • Rockets have won 60% of playoff games vs. Spurs (12-8). This means that 60% of the time they meet in the playoffs, the Spurs have a 0% chance of advancing.
  • Spurs have won 0% of their playoff series against the Rockets (0-3). According to my research, it is difficult to win a Championship when you lose a playoff series in the same year.
  • Rockets have 57% more HOF players than the Spurs.
  • Rockets HOF Calvin Murphy has fathered more children than all of the Spurs HOF players combined.

Quite absurd since the majority of those #s come from before 1996, and that is due to the fact that the Rockets have not been close to the same level as the Spurs since 1997 and haven't played each other since 1995. Congrats on that playoff series win over the Spurs when Hakeem was in his prime and in the 1980 & 1981 seasons, before the majority on this board were born. Certainly something to toot your horn about.

I think you missed the point. I was arguing that historical stats mean nothing now. Believe it or not, I don't actually think Calvin Murphy's promiscuous behavior will aid the Rockets in this series.

Actually that's not what that means as playoff series are not 1 game series. If you're going to talk smack, at least use logic.

Also being 12-8 against a team in the playoffs all time actually means nothing when you are isolating a single series removed from when you went 12-8.

Almost every input and variable imagined that would affect win percentage is different than the games where one team is 12-8.

No, I got your point I just think it was very poorly made. Guitarsoup didn't extrapolate some useless data to make his post. He took the yearly data going back over 30 years, and I think he makes a pretty valid point. Unless a top tier team just flips a switch somehow, makes a huge trade, or was battling injuries during the season and their record isn't indicative of their talent level, the cream rises to the top during the regular season AND into the playoffs.

Well if the Cavs win it all this year that'll be another team without 55 wins to win it all and they didn't have any trades or major long term injuries.

Well they got Korver but I wouldn't call that major

That's true, but even with LeBron playing out of his mind, I think the Cavs get Rolled by the West Coast Superfriends.

Houston also has more green space. Dying the river doesn't count as green space.

For all the smack talk about two great cities and two great NBA franchises that's pretty harsh that you say someone should end their life because they are a "fan" on an NBA team. Not a player or an owner but a "fan". Are you 12?

Memorial Park is pretty damn huge. Big enough to have coyotes that eat little fufu dogs.

Houston has almost 50,000 acres of parks. Most of any city in the country.
