The American national soccer team is a top 10-15 team in the world, is made up of entirely professional players including multiple high level Euro league players and we have a massive home field advantage. The US Men's hockey team was a bunch of college players, many of whom had very trivial professional careers, beating the greatest professional hockey team in history to that point.

It's almost unfathomable to this day that the hockey team pulled that off.

It's almost unfathomable to this day that the hockey team pulled that off.

And what most people forget is the USSR game wasn't the gold medal game. The US still had to beat Finland after that to win gold. Would've been very easy to have a let down after the USSR game.
