Last night was a real moment for this country, brought on by sports. We're not at 1980 Hockey level yet, but this is something we haven't seen in terms of unity in a very long time. Millions upon millions of people not giving a rat's ass who you voted for, where you're from, what color your skin is, what gender you want to claim - just taking pride in their country. I didn't really realize until we had won how much we needed something like this. And it's pretty GD perfect that it came just a couple of days before our 250th anniversary as a country.
Even winning the World Cup won't solve all of our problems, but it's nice waking up to everyone excited about the same thing, chanting USA everywhere you look, and wearing the colors with pride.
If you're the kind of person who sees 70,000 fans in San Francisco singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and immediately thinks, "Oh, how ironic, because those people HATE America" or you see a big crowd gathered in an open space in another city by the thousands to cheer on Team USA and your first thought is "Eh, other countries do it better", it might be time to acknowledge that the problem is actually you, not everyone else.
This is the moment. You're either on board or you're not.
