They are going with endangers the safety of an opponent but in truth there are a ton tackles that meet that bar that don't get called.

Except it was more a coming together than anything else. Balo was looking at the ball, not attempting a tackle. He had every right to be i. That space as well and just had an unfortunate landing spot

There have been some red cards for DOGSO, like against South Africa in their game with Mexico.

And whether you think the "covering your mouth" thing is dumb or not, it was made crystal clear to every player on every team that this was going to be an automatic red card. The Ecuador player last night was clearly like, "Screw it, we already lost and now this Mexican is going to hear what I think about su madre."

What got called tonight, OTOH, could probably be called in more games than not.

Hard to say how much is FIFA corruption-there's obviously a double standard in that there is no way in hell they would call that against Messi, but whether they are actively trying to screw the US versus using replay for things it really shouldn't be used for in the first place is harder to say, IMO.

I think replay in soccer (and college football, and the NBA) should only be used to overturn ejections, not create them when they weren't seen on the field of play.
