Comfortable win for US, really took their foot off the gas in second half and rested some guys. Top XI squad is a real problem for our opponents.

Now to round of 16, we will avoid Mexico until final.
Top 4 teams qualify for U20 World Cup and top 2 qualify for 2024 Olympics.

US easily handles Nicaragua.

Quinn Sullivan with the brace.

The star of the tournament for the US is by far Diego Luna.

Kid is built like a fire plug but has a great touch and high soccer IQ.

The best part about watching this tourney is not rooting for one of these guys to have to carry the US soon.

Aaronson looks like his brother. Looks and play. I've read he's better than his brother at this age.

It's so great almost all of these kids are pros. That's a huge difference between now and just a few years ago.

The U20 team in 2019 was mostly professional players as well, Im pretty sure.

Correct. But not the previous years. And not all of them I believe for 2019.

Good thread scouting out a couple of guys on the u20s.

Yeah. I saw that. I'm surprised he left out Sullivan.

I think it's two things, he was identifying players he think have a real shot at being a national team started as they grow up.
At this level, you will often have players like Sullivan who can score goals but their overall game doesn't necessarily translate to being an impact player at the next level.
Or he simply just listed a few players he had in mind, and might also think Sullivan is good but just wasn't on his mind.

I thought his other tweet comparing our results against Mexico and Canada was interesting, basically saying under GGG 3 of our best results have been against Mexico and 3 of our worst results have been against Canada.
So when you think of how both of those teams play stylistically, in his opinion our WC group opponents tend to play similarly to Canada and we will have to unveil some tactical wrinkles/changes to have success.

I will say, we did destroy Canada in one of the Nations League games. We know our team tends to struggle a little against teams that try to sit back and let us play against them, so in addition to tactical changes hopefully all our young players continue to develop. 5-6 months of club play is a LONG time for players in their early 20s.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but the two Canada qualifiers don't concern me that much. Looking at the team we fielded in the 1-1 home draw and how we played, I know there's not much to feel great about but I honestly didn't think we played that badly (I was there in person for that one). The 2-0 loss up in Canada was just an all-around flukey match. Gave up the early goal in the wind and we really got bullied around the field (hats off to Canada who really came out with something to prove).

But breaking down a low block is hard. Even for elite teams. This spring I thought we really showed a lot more in that area as well as not giving up goals on the counter which is how a team playing like Canada tries to beat you. Like I said, those two results weren't good, but I don't look at them like some sort of window into the soul of this USMNT under GB.
Rudyjax

I saw that too.

How many teams are going to park the bus and hope to score on a counter?

Sullivan has an incredible pedigree. I'd be shocked if he doesn't continue to develop.

Of course, there are dozens of Ux players that make an impact but don't do much for the national team.

Canada gets a penalty in the 100th minute in extra time. Takes 7 minute from the foul to the kick. 2 minutes added.
Unlucky handling in the area.

They've been so lucky.
Edit:
Guatemala equalizes in the 119thj minute!!
KFTM to see who advances.

Edit:
Guatemala advances 4-3 in KFTM.

I can't say I'm not happy about that result.

Yea, this last round of WCQ has made me dislike Canada greatly

I will say that when we played Canada in our group they were by far an inferior team. Got a good bounce for their first goal and an unfortunate own goal for their 2nd. Im not surprised they got bounced by Guatemala.

They were incredibly lucky to tie that game. US couldn't finish to save their life.

Expected Goals in that match was 3.1 to 1.04 in favor of the US. Crazy it ended in a 2-2 tie.

Back in January, the senior national team's 0-2 loss in Canada in qualifying had an xG of 1.72 (US) - 1.09 (Can). Soccer is a cruel sport.

USYNT plays tonight against Costa Rica at 6pm. Looking to advance into the Concacaf u-20 semi finals.

Costa Rica beat T&T 4-1 in their last time out while the US beat Nicaragua 5-0. The top 2 teams in this tournament qualify for both the u20 World Cup as well as the 2024 Olympics. Would be huge to make both those tournaments.

This is the most important match of the tourney. Lose and not only do you miss out on WC but also on Olympics.
KCup17

I'd argue that this one and the next one are equally as important. Lose either of them and you dont qualify

I guess I misunderstood the qualifying structure. Win tonight and WC is confirmed. Win the next game and Olympics is confirmed.

I was 'shocked' to see Costa Rica do what they did as the whistle blew. "Never" seen a central american team resort to cheap shots and violence in a game before.

I don't understand what Quinn Sullivan did to receive the yellow. He wasn't even in the pushing in the first half. I think they confused him for Neal.
Aston94

That game was sooooo CONCACAF. Referee had no control, fight after match, very dicey yellow cards, penalty kick that was beyond questionable, all it needed was a large crowd throwing batteries and urine bombs.

But, with all that, the US won and will advance to semifinals.

Of course now we have to play the host to advance. Not sure how good Honduras is seemed to have a weak group and have the home advantage.
