It's the right move for a number of reasons but one I haven't heard mentioned is that it cements his legacy. Not that it needed much cementing but it would have been bad to watch him struggle or see him benched for another 2-3 years.

Central mid is still on the list. I believe a winger and versatile defender are on the list too.
Right but wondering who. Seems like most think Matic is out at this point. Dier even possible? The rumors seem to be drying out.
I'm still hoping for Fabinho. Especially since Matic is probably a lost cause now and Dier will be crazy expensive. He has the added benefit of being able to play RB too, maybe to give Valencia a break in games where United play a two man midfield.
It sounds like a winger that will stay wide is also still in the cards, United need someone that can reliably get crosses into Lukaku now.

James Rodriguez would be a pipe dream of mine, but I doubt United does a deal with Madrid anytime soon.

Latest rumor is that United are going to hijack Bakayoko to Chelsea as well. Frankly, I think that's more wishful thinking than anything else as it would make a great story for the tabloids. I mean, no way that can happen twice.

They are already foaming over not getting Lukaku. Since they sold him there in the first place. Stealing anyone else would send them over the edge.

If you had bothered to watch Rooney play in the last 2 years you would realize he is a shell of himself. He has clearly lost a step and last year was not in soccer shape. His best days are behind him and he was not going to be more than a bit player on this team going forward. Perhaps Koeman can motivate him. Perhaps going home will motivate him. Only time will tell if he has anything in the tank. But if you don't realize that swapping Rooney for Lukaku (and stealing him from Chelsea) was a big move you are even more clueless than you sound.

I don't think it is a matter of siding with one or the other, I don't believe there was a rift between them.
Mou was hired to win trophies. There is no room for sentiment on the pitch if you are trying to be the best. There just wasn't a role for Rooney in Mou's system.
Rooney's skill set is not one that players usually retain as they get older. He really doesn't seem to have much left in the tank. I hope he can be a valuable piece for Everton, but I think it will be as a role player off the bench at best.

Googling some this AM and it seems Bakayoko may in fact end up at Manchester United. I may be glancing too fast but also maybe that our offer was LESS than what Chelsea bid? Am I missing something? Different currency denominations maybe?
