@BDavisAAS tells us it's widely believed Tom Herman has his eye on Texas & Texas A&M to see if any openings pop up

Do we want Charlie to win 7 or 8 games to keep Herman away from Austin?

I'd rather Sumlin just earn his paycheck and win 10 games. Then it wouldn't matter who's in Austin.

Let the Sips have him.

We don't need to overpay another unproven flavor of the month from Cougar High.

Sumlin's buyout would be $15 million after next season. Hiring Herman won't be an option.

Dumbest thing I have seen on here in a while.

Does Ohio State winning the natty in 2014 ring bell? How about the 12-0, 12-2, 14-1 seasons while he was the offensive coordinator there? Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, or JT Barrett ring some bells? He was the QB coach.

Isn't our contract with Sumlin always going to be a $15MM buyout? It auto-renews every year back to 5 years with like 3 days where it would only be a 3 year buyout. Not that I am calling for his dismissal but we write the worst contracts in the world bar none.

So working under Urban Meyer guarantees he will win as a head coach?

Great let's just hire him now. Natty 2016!

Winning at Uh is probably a lot easier than at other similar places because, taking their location into account, they attract more P5 type talent than the other smaller schools within the same conference.

Sumlin never even sniffed a conference title as a coordinator. And never won a conference title at UH.

Herman would separate the wheat from the chafe and weed out those who don't want to do what it takes to win championships.

Was looking for the terms of Sumlin's contract and ran across this USAToday article. Says his contract started Jan 1, 2014 which means 2016 is the third contract year and $15 million would be owed (plus any unpaid funds remaining for CY2014) if terminated. No new info, but substantiates the claim that $15 million is still owed after this year.

So a&m finds a way to hold itself hostage again with a coaches contract.

I hope Sumlin turns it around, but they will lose more than $15M in season tickets if we still suck and he doesn't hit the street before December. I'd keep the line to Tom Herman wide open, till we see if Sumlin has learned how to handle players and coaches after 30 years in the business.

This was the first year my kids are old enough to get on a plane and come see a game, but I put that trip off another year. My heart can't take home loss embarrassment that I shell out $3000 to cross two states lines to come see. Yea, yea. 2%.

In fact, the 12th man foundation is about to lose my donation. I'll start writing my check directly to the civil engineering department. Probably should do that anyway.

Since when are there any guarantees in coaching?

Other than Meyer or Saban, any one we hire is going to have some risk. You neutralize a lot of that risk with herman if you keep Chavis. Of course that's a big if, but still.

All that said, we are clearly better off if Sumlin wins big and stays long term, but that's an even bigger if at this point.

If we have a poor season, the cost of losing has to be factored in, and it's considerably more than 15 million.

Obvious troll sock is obvious, but Patterson has player drug problems, and briles had has player rape problems.

Hire the guy at Houston who's hiring all these coaches. They haven't whiffed on a coach in over a decade now.

The moral of the story is that Herman did the more work at Houston in one year, as opposed to Sumlin's four years. He is in Urban Meyer's pedigree, disputably the best coach in college football in the past 3 decades. He has always had a top notch offense and he already has a recruiting stake in Texas. What more could you want?

I thought Herman already an an agreement in principle with the sips. They will have him signed as soon as UH finishes their last regular season game.

Chobbit will be canned in by November once bowl eligibility has gone by the boards once again.

Laughable that people always compare Sumlin and Herman because they coached at the same school. Sumlin had Holgorsen and Kingsbury as OC's and inherited Briles's talent. Herman took over from Levine who couldn't get any coaching job after he was fired. Meanwhile, ask OSU if they miss Herman. Their offense took a huge hit last year despite returning the same talent from the year before.
