Tom Herman will never be coach at Texas A&M. We also won't fire Sumlin with 8 wins. Good to great chance he returns with 7.

This is Herman's angle and his agent to work the media and athletic departments for the tu job.

Lololololiol "unproven flavor of the month..."

Do you even watch football bro? He's been wildly successful everywhere he's been. My guess is you didn't even know who he was until last season.

That's the hard truth. Losing 20 games in a 4 year stretch should be unacceptable here. Instead, it gives you a good to great chance at a 6th year.

I thought Herman already an an agreement in principle with the sips. They will have him signed as soon as UH finishes their last regular season game.

Chobbit will be canned in by November once bowl eligibility has gone by the boards once again.
Chobbit!!! LOL! I haven't heard that one yet. Then again I'm not on the boards nearly as much as I used to.
Anyway, the sips may have a better season coming up than expected. They've got one of the best roster's money can buy now. Emphasis on buy, them cheatin' ****ers! The freshman QB has excellent accuracy imo. I know it was against tu defense but still, lets see how he does when the domer's are after him.

I hope we never hire a coach who has ever had a grill.

I think both Sumlin and Strong get two more seasons. Strong because they are boxed in and Sumlin because of that contract. We just have to lay back, enjoy being in the SEC, and run out the clock on that contract. Someday......

The last two nationwide coaching searches began and ended in Houston. I think you can understand some skepticism here.

Isn't our contract with Sumlin always going to be a $15MM buyout? It auto-renews every year back to 5 years with like 3 days where it would only be a 3 year buyout. Not that I am calling for his dismissal but we write the worst contracts in the world bar none.
Never heard of the auto-renewal... do you have a link to something that mentions that?

I had read it on here from time to time when the topic came up. I googled for his contract and found this: https://hkm.com/football/wp-content/uploads/coach-contracts/kevinsumlin-tamu-employment-contract.pdf and I don't see anything like autorenewal in there. I guess this is the second addendum of his contract and had been redone in 2013, 2014, and 2015 (second paragraph page 1) so it certainly looked like it was autorenewing.

It still stands that we love to overpay when it comes to firing (again, not calling for that yet in this case, good hires made recently). Many other schools write theirs such that you only owe one year if you fire them.

Dumbest thing I have seen on here in a while.

Does Ohio State winning the natty in 2014 ring bell? How about the 12-0, 12-2, 14-1 seasons while he was the offensive coordinator there? Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, or JT Barrett ring some bells? He was the QB coach.

So working under Urban Meyer guarantees he will win as a head coach?

Great let's just hire him now. Natty 2016!
No, it doesn't. But then again - being a coach at UH doesn't mean that he will automatically have sub stellar performance either.

Something about it working both ways applies here, but I can't put my finger on it...

All in one place (note scribd access appears to require use of their app to see the whole thing):

Sumlin Contract Text

Original 2011 contract for CY2012: http://media.ledger-enquirer.com/static/SEC-Coaching-Contracts/Texas-AM/Sumlin-Contract.pdf

CY2013:

Note CY2015 follows the same end of term as 2014 as far as I can tell through the end of CY2019.

I'll preface this by saying that I think the best hires of CEO Sumlin's career required some luck (looking at Chavis, Turner, and Kingsbury+Manziel with this comment). However, through luck or whatever, we've ended up with a pretty good staff on both sides of the ball. So if I have to bet on Chavis fixing the defense and Mazzone+Turner fixing the offense, or bringing in a new guy to start from scratch (which fails to produce good results more often than not), I'm taking the current staff. I'm taking them even if I'm now convinced that Sumlin is a meh coach who stumbled into a pair of "right place at the right time" situations with Keenum at Houston and an NFL caliber roster here.

This is what I know...offensively we can't be worse than with Spav.

And our defense will be better with another year under Chavis.

Speaking of buyouts

Notre dame is still paying Charlie Weiss and in the end could be as high as 19 million.

Weiss started fast, going 19-4 in the regular season, with two BCS bowls in his first two years, but after fading, was fired after five years. I guess Notre Dame did not want to continue being mediocre. Hmmmm.

To be fair, Spav's hands were tied. He only had a handful of plays he could call with the blocking scheme we had last year. And I'm no Spav supporter by any stretch of imagination.

It took 2 subpar seasons before Snider and Spav were released. It only took one season for Christensen was let go.

IMHO, I don't think the big money sips are going to want Herman. The AD might, but not the old guys with the checkbooks. They are going to go "Urban or bust."

No doubt Christensen sucked but Spav was oc. I'm sure he had the authority to make some changes with oline. He could've gotten more than 3 index cards anytime he wanted but had no idea that more than 3 cards was allowed by ncaa rules.

Spav and Christensen sucked, that's why they're gone,

But Spav did have a big advantage in that his head coach was an offensive guru!

That's like giving KK/Spav the glory for JFF's endeavors. But I see where you're headed.

Before we get all lathered up over Herman, let's see what he does in his sophomore season at Cougar High and their highly esteemed conference - then regroup on the topic.

Hard to see us getting 8 regular season wins next year...odds appear much greater we start 1-6 or 2-5.
Will we be favored in any of first 6 games next year other than OOC crap game #2?

Ags,

Coach Herman is now making Power 5 money coaching a Group of Five team. Why would he have an eye on us or tu when he has a team this year that is poised to make a serious run to at the very least defend their AAC conference title and make a New Year's Six bowl to at the most being the first Group of Five team to make the Division I-FBS playoff?

If he accomplishes either of those, then why move when he can truly take over the state of Texas as a Group of Five team? As for us Ags, we need to win the SEC PDQ and/or make a New Year's Six bowl ourselves. Remember, we are also competing with 19 other Division I football institutions (11 other Division I-FBS and eight other Division I-FCS) in the state of Texas for football recruits.

SEC title/New Year Six bowl or bust!

"From cougar high."

By your logic, he is disqualified due to where he has spent the past year. You're disregarding all of his work due to the school he is at, yet he had UH playing better than Texas A&M.

Oh, and can't forget that offense that he had a huge part in winning a national title for Ohio State.

How many years in a row of great coaching do you want?

Kevin Sumlin's contract does not auto renew it expires on Dec 31 2019 and that contract is fully guaranteed if he is terminated without cause and must be paid in fully 90 days after he is terminated . So after every year the buyout goes down 5 million.
