Some late 80s early 90s placss. Two pesos before crappie cab no wonder the lawsuit. Tom's BBQ that someone earlier mentioned is now Brisket House in Houston. BTW it is awesome every time I go there it is really good ie the aggie special which is now just called the special. Lastly not I College Station hut in Lake Somerville, there was a steak joint there that had these huge steaks 24 oz for like $12 and apparently had a butcher or meat processing or whatever in the back.

Have a field day on that.

These restaurant threads are popular!

I was a waiter at 3C and at Ft. Shiloh in the 77-81 era. Lots of fun good food and good times.

After work we would go to the Chicken and have a beer or two, and eat some crackers out of that huge cracker barrel they used to have there. They did not have the back part there then where you bought burgers. Or sometimes go to Houston and go dancing at Gilley's.

Favorite places were:

the Cowhop
Farmer's market
Grapevine
and many others already mentioned

Loved the Silk Stocking. Fish Tacos were pretty gamey though. Famunda cheese enchiladas were awesome, only cost $1 for each.

Are we talking about the Pizza Hut in the old Bank building that had $1 personal pan pizzas and $1 bottle beer and people would pay in change (mostly pennies)? The paying in change thing might have just been me...

The company actually still exists, just not the restaurant. The are (or at least were when I worked there) officially the parent company to Cafe Eccell.

Chanello's Pizza, I ate one of the 9 pizzas cooked at Sparky's, Escargot at the Grapevine, Swenson's for ice cream, and Danver's when they gave out the coupon books and you could get a buy on get one ham sandwich and go to the salad bar and put free cheese on it.

Those were the days when a $12 clear bag that some of the young bucks think is no big expense would have broke the bank for several meals and a free night out or two.

Ahh, Swenson's. I worked in Post Oak Mall in the 80's while a student, at the "Bookland" store (I think these still exist but are now owned by Books-a-Million). On slow weeknights the girls who worked at Swenson's (no Rule 1, sorry) would borrow some of our magazines in exchange for free root beer floats.

Was a regular at the northgate Double Dave's too. Since it closed I wonder what happened to all of the plaques on the walls for the beer drinkers club. I'm on there a few times and would love to take a picture of those plaques if they still exist.

Lu Ann's and Mom's .

Those were the days.

You left a "contribution" at Mom's in a glass jar; I was told that was the way she avoided being classified as a restaurant.

You've just given me a reason to visit College Station when a sporting event isn't going on this summer.

Thank you, sir.

Opened in '95. Love this place. It was my go to first date restaurant.

Oh, and Rami is the owner. LOL

I think "William" is a waiter that's been there about that long. Might have his name wrong. Happens with age!

Cenare - when you saved up all your money for a guaranteed panty-dropper date. Website says opened in 1981.

This thread brings back the memories. I couldn't wait until I turned 21 to hit up Flying Tomato for Sneaky Pete, or Sneakers or DT Bryan to see Joe King Carrasco. Even though Alfred T. Hornback's and Yesterdays were liberal on checking IDs, it was a great day when I could go shoot stick and drink legally. Same with WnM for 50 cent drafts on Thursday Simpsons nights.

Those pictures of Mom are great. Brings back some nice memories.

I'm trying to remember if the Luby's on Texas was there in the 70s - I know it closed a few years ago, but it seems like it was there forever.

A little trivia - the first Schlotzsky's outside of the Austin market was opened in '77 in an old gas station pretty close to the old Luby's, on the other side of Texas Ave. It was located somewhere around where the Appleby's is at now (would have to look at it in person to remember the exact location). The structure was still there until a few years ago.
Before they opened the Shlotzsky's on Texas, it was located on Villa Maria in Bryan in the strip center with the Villa Maria Barber Shop (now Sonny's Barber Shop) across from Manor East Mall (now, the Tejas Center).

What was the name of the Mexican restaurant that used to be out in front of HEB (right on the corner of Holleman/Texas)? Was that a Casa Ole as well? I don't think it is there anymore, but I can't remember looking in the last decade.
That was an El Chico Restaurant.

Kettle on University torn down and is now site of a 24hr clinic that I am not sure is even open nowadays. Taco Cabana across from campus on Texas Ave has been closed for several months ...for sale sign still up on site.

Lots of good "mom and pop" type of places have bitten the dust in the last 25-30 years with the growth of B/CS and the invasion of chain restaurants.

Another anecdote about "Moms" in Bryan.
It was still being operated by an elderly man in the mid-80s because I remember taking my parents there in 1985 or 1986. A few years later tried to take my grandma there (around 1992 or 1993 i believe) and it had closed and returned to just being a residence.

Martins still exists on S College in Bryan...easily be the oldest restaurant in Bryan/College Station and gotta be one of the oldest in Texas. Not sure where it ranks on that scale...but i cannot think of too many restaurants in Texas that have been around since the 1920's.
