What was the name of the Mexican restaurant that used to be out in front of HEB (right on the corner of Holleman/Texas)? Was that a Casa Ole as well? I don't think it is there anymore, but I can't remember looking in the last decade.

Oh, and Jose's out on HWY 30 was really good back in the day. It's where Koppe Bridge ended up.

Freshman year, 1987, that location was a freakin' Porsche dealership.

Since this thread got hijacked with 80's restaurants I'll jump in. I worked at Mama's Pizza which was on Texas right across from the main entrance to campus. We had the best pizza in town.
What happened to Archie's hamburgers?

No - Mom's was located in Bryan near Haswell Park on East 25th Street.

What are the new school restaurants in College Station worth trying out? I've only been to College Station a handful of times, but plan to visit more often this year. I'm a law school Ag. Hard to tell from my username.
Blackwater Draw is just across Church St. From Obannons/Paddock/Tipsy. Ain't the cheapest but the food and beer are damn good.

Great thread, brings back a lot of memories.

Nobody's mentioned El Toro. It was in Bryan, close to downtown and better than Zarapes. It was in what looked to be an old Diary Queen and it had a large plywood sign nailed to the outside wall that said "Vote Por Phil Gramm". When he change parties, somebody spray painted over the sign but you could still clearly read it. I always wondered why they just didn't take the sign down.

What happened to Archie's hamburgers?
Archie's turned into lots of things since it closed.... it was a double Dave's Pizza for a while, a sushi roll place, a sno cone place, etc.

And the only Mama's I remember is when it was on the end of Culpepper Plaza, after it closed it became Bullwinkles, then Bullwinkle's became something else, and I'm not even sure that location is leased currently.

Any 90's people rember a Mexican place that (I think) was on the North side of 21, West of Texas? It had a covered outdoor seating area and you ordered from the window. Great cheap tamales that you could get covered in chili, cheddar and onions.

The building was red, but my memory from those years is really blurry.

Mama's moved to culpepper from the location across from campus.

For those interested in even more such trivia, the old Mama's location across from the Polo Field was originally an Oakridge Smokehouse.

Last National Bank had the best nachos and bloody marys. Nachos came in a big basket with the beans, meat, cheese and jalapenos in the middle. Their chips were sturdy enough for dipping into the meaty, melty goodness.

Grapevine had some nice and cheap house wines (good pitchers of sangria) and a huge chef salad with ham and turkey, cheese, boiled eggs, ripe olives and delicious salad dressings. For a student on a budget, a filling meal for a few dollars.

The Grapevine sangrias were the bomb. We would go to the drive thru and get a pitcher to go. They would serve them in the one gallon sour cream containers.

Actually, I think they made their sangria blend with either Gallo or Carlo Rossi gallon jug wine. Red, white, rose and then the oranges, lemons and limes. But it was very tasty.

Also, maybe a stretch, but in terms of long standing that taste of the tropics place in the mall had been around a long time, and is still the same, still pretty good if you like fruit drinks.

Jose's and Zarape were owned by the same people. Zarape was better IMO, don't know why they closed it. Haven't been to Jose's in a long time. It always smelled like Pine Sol.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 60's buffet at the Best Western - all you could eat for $1.25.
Aggies lined up and got "dozens" of little bowls of this and that - and filled up..
Many ate one meal a day - that's all we could afford.
Places like the Best Western Buffet was a way to survive...
It's location was where the current Olive Garden is located

How has Tokyo Steakhouse, Fajita Rita's, and Casa Tomas not made this list of long gone CS eateries that I would love to eat at for old times sake?
