Would be nice if people actually posted the names of those restaurants still open, which I believe was the intent of the OP.

No - Mom's was located in Bryan near Haswell Park on East 25th Street.

If we're counting chains, Der Wienerschnitzel would be the oldest in the area, as not only has that location been in operation going on close to 50 years now, but the building itself has remained virtually unchanged (one of the last surviving original A-Frames) as well. Both the McDonald's location on University and the Whataburger on Dominik have been around almost as long, but as both of those buildings have been torn down and rebuilt at least once over the years, they might not count as "old school" depending upon how OCD one wants to be about it.

As for local restaurants, Martin's takes the prize, going all the way back to the 1920's, with the current building itself dating to 1939.

FYI, The guy that ran Tom's originally now owns and runs The Brisket House in Houston
How does this place compare to Tom's? I may drive down just to visit this place.

These kinds of threads always turn into 80's guys listing every closed place they can think of.

If you live farther than a mile or 2 don't make the drive.

Chicken Oil was a Sunday staple in the late 70's. Double meat, double cheese deathburger was great for a hangover, washed down with a 24 Oz Fosters. Then some pool.

I've driven more than 2 miles, but I wouldn't make a special trip unless you're already going to be in the Galleria/Memorial area of Houston. There's a little nostalgia factor in ordering the special.

And I'm not sure it's the same owner as Tom's, but the same pit master.

Cenare Italian food is on University Ave. in College Station. It was a real outlier back in the early 80's in that it was considered a "fancy" restaurant. The food was great.

Its still There.

A place that is not there anymore was "Fish Richards". Great story behind that restaurant on Wellborn Rd.

Is the new Longhorn Tavern the same LT folks in a second location?

Please?! I might have to travel back just for the CF steak if true.
I'm pretty sure it is the same people. They just moved from the Hwy 21 location when all of that land was being purchased to build the bigger HEB.

I wrote a blog entry six years ago about food I missed. Here is the section about A&M.

"From 1978 to 1982 we were blessed by the absence of big city chain restaurants who eventually showed up and drove all the local joints out of business. Places like Tinsleys (fantastic fried chicken), Peppers (amazing burgers and even better fries), Danvers (first burger joint where you could substitute a salad bar for fries), Youngbloods (home of the Aggie Special Chicken Friend Steak to die for), Farmer's Market (lovely little sub shop right across the street from the campus), The Underground Burger (sold at the Sbisa Underground, which is still there but the burger isn't). The Underground Burger was Beef, Canadian Bacon, Swiss Cheese, and heaven. The Commons Cafeteria (yes, this school cafeteria was amazing with all you can eat pizza, hamburgers, subs, and salad bar), and Fort Shiloh (western themed steak house with good steaks and a great salad bar). My wife and I ate our way through college here and all of them are now gone."

Other places that are gone....
Pelican's Wharf
DSP (Dead Solid Perfect burgers) I think they were gone before I graduated

You can tell how long it's been since someone was in BCS when they mention LN. It's been closed almost 10 years now hasn't it?

This is her. Grew up in Bryan - ate there lots.

That is Mrs. Carlton. Her sister, Miss Ball would make the salad everyday sitting in her same folding metal chair.
Mrs. Carlton would oversee the kitchen and her main helper, Nell, then proceed to the front living room to collect $1.25 for breakfast, $1.50 for lunch, $1.75 for supper. This was in mid-70's.
