Wow. Way to be killjoys over something fun. If you must know, the card stunt will spell out 3 things: ATM (logo), Lead by Example, and If Not You, Then Who? That's it! If folks participate, it will be awesome. And Mr. Klemm has busted ass to ask folks to support it. Look. All universities raise private gifts from donors for all kinds of purposes. And they all have "campaigns" with financial goals - to build focus and excitement. Lead by Example is A&M's third comprehensive fundraising campaign (the first was Capturing the Spirit from 1990-96 and the second was One Spirit One Vision from 2000-06). The counting of "lead gifts" for Lead by Example started in 2012 and has $1.9B in gifts and pledges. The pace of early gifts helps determine the campaign goal. This weekend is the official public launch of the campaign. ALL GIFTS benefiting A&M from 2012 thru 2020 count in this Lead by Example Campaign from your football donation to 12th Man to your annual (unrestricted) gift to Assn. of Former Students to more sizable (restricted) endowment gifts made to Texas A&M Foundation. Restricted means you (donor) decide how it's used and which A&M program it benefits. This might be an endowed scholarship for students from Brazos County majoring in Ag Economics. It might be an endowment to provide extra financial support for faculty or programs in your favorite department or college. Your gift, your choice. So, please support the card stunt today as part of the Aggie Band's halftime show. Thanks and Gig 'em.

I don't think this diatribe did what you intended, pal.

And

No Ag tag.

This whole thing was just stupid, now it's borderline offensive. I actually hope it fails now.

Anyone else concerned that Yale is resorting to "sucks" as an insult?

It's just not very.... Intelligent.

I hope that poster is incorrect that gifts to the TMF for athletics are included. They most definitely should not be.

And yes, it's an incredibly lame stunt.

Section 214, row 5, seat 12; Is your card the 8 of clubs?

That's the kind of card trick I want to see. Give me magic!

What would the zoo message be on these cards? Better yet, what would the message be if this thing failed and became an internet thing? You know, fights and stuff in the stands over sending a message out.TV announcer " I think the riot started because there seemed to be an issue over the slogan, "Lead by Example".

It's about football. We don't need to put up some feel good message. The college game day experience does not need to be fixed. It's perfect like it is - minus all the advertisements they blaze at us. It starts off as a pro-aggie message. Then it becomes a pro-Aggie message sponsored by fill-in-the-blank. Now you're not just getting advertisements crammed down your throat you're a participant in cramming down peoples throats. Or it's a "support our troops" message which is great. But then it becomes a more political message. Remember, it's not just about this one message. It's about what they will eventually turn it in to.

Just stop and let us enjoy our football game as it is.

Blah blah blah... This doesn't sound like a football game. That's why we're here. Fundraising is fine, but take it somewhere else.

I don't have a problem with fundraising campaigns, or even necessarily with lame slogans for fundraising campaigns. However, if the campaign is to raise money to put in the endowment, tell me that!

What you shouldn't do is tell me that you need billions of dollars for something specific and awesome and then not tell me what it is. If I wanted that, I could just replay Donald Trump in the debates.

If you don't believe enough in the merit of the ideas to let people know what they are BEFORE you ask them for money, and you don't think that those ideas would increase enthusiasm for the program, then my suspicion is raised.

It's hard enough to trust my alma mater with my money when it is coming up with terrible ideas like 25x25 related to the basic strategy for running university departments. I am even less likely to trust them to spend money on completely new programs, and I am tenfold less likely to step forward as an advocate for vague promises of hope and change.

Tamu just tweeted that these cards fold out. Looks like there is a slot in them for you to look through.... The effort and six figures spent on this are a misuse of the funds collected so far on this campaign.

I seriously hope those of you in the stands do not participate. It sends the message that we will not blindly donate and support an ill defined vague campaign, we are not supportive of the direction the current administration is taking with our beloved university, and that the slogan and campaign are just cheesey and lame. I fear the card stunt would be more damaging than anything to our image. The first time I heard the campaign slogan I did a face palm. Now tie that into a 4 bill stunt and use the fans to blindly hold them up is a gross underestimation of the intelligence and degree to which we discern things. WE will lead by example and not participate. Any vision that turns my school into a diploma mill and balloons the size of the university are not OK with us.

Aside from being asked to advertise to ourselves: What is the money being asked for exactly?

From the A&M foundation website, the "Lead By Example" Iniative is announced with a headline of "Texas A&M Announces Major Initiative To Address "Real World" Issues".

Texas A&M Announces Major Initiative To Address "Real World" Issues

quote:
Committed to leading by example, Texas A&M University announced today the launch of a $4 billion comprehensive campaign to address major societal challenges facing the state, nation and world.
quote:
The multi-year campaignthemed "Lead By Example" is aimed at providing adequate resources to help solve a variety of "real world" problems, Texas A&M President Michael K. Young said in making the announcement.
quote:
Funds derived from the campaign will provide scholarships to enable Texas A&M to compete even more effectively for the best students and help the university recruit and retain more internationally recognized faculty by supporting their research and teaching, he added.
quote:
Also, Young noted the additional funding will help provide the best possible facilities to encourage creativity and innovation, and provide access to cutting-edge technology that will keep Texas A&M students and faculty at the forefront of their disciplines.

He said a portion of the funding derived from the campaign will be used to provide support for Texas A&M's athletic programs through more scholarships for student-athletes, enhanced facilities and other resources that will help the university advance in the ranks of the U.S. universities with premier athletic programs.
Seems like a misleading headline, given the content of the article. The guts of the article sound like general fundraising effort.

The lack of clarity and details in the message, and the over-promising-label-on-the-package here is politician-esque.

Texas A&M leaders think Aggies' loyalty to dear ol' Texas A&M is going to make us blindly support efforts to give our money to them to spend as they please for their "worldly" pet projects for which they refuse to provide any real details. I am most concerned about how these current A&M leaders opened up Texas A&M enrollment to about 15,000 new students per year in an effort to increase the number of former students available to fill the new 102,000-seat Kyle Field with more students and season-ticket holders and to try to increase the alumni donors. This exponential growth on the College Station campus, though, is diluting the quality, value, and meaning of an Aggie education while overcrowding our College Station campus.

I really wonder how in the heck A&M leaders expect to raise another $4 billion in the next 4 1/2 years now that during the past two general fundraising campaigns and the recent Kyle Field fundraising campaign the naming rights have already been given up to every available A&M campus building, room, hallway, bench, sidewalk, tree, shrub, or squirrel and now that those supporting the Kyle Field project are having to pay extraordinarily expensive season ticket prices to see the Aggies play football at home games.

It's great to be able to give back what you can in money and other contributions to your alma mater and many of us do that because we appreciate what A&M gave us and want that tradition to continue for others. What I completely disagree with are fundraising gimmicks by A&M leaders that have little explanation about the purpose, method, and end state and which use goofy slogans and expensive card stunts to try to encourage such giving.

I'll do my best to answer questions leading up to the event. The A&M logo and Lead by Example will figure prominantly in what it says. It is a pro-A&M message supporting the themes of the campaign. The video that will play just before the card stunt will provide a significant hint at what it will say. Beyond that, how about we leave a little for the surprise factor?

Which of these six-figure salaries is yours biobioprof and how much of it do YOU contribute to A&M?: Texas A&M University Biology Professors' Salaries

What scientific evidence did you use to make the incorrect conclusion that those who disagree with silly fundraising shenanigans by A&M leaders do not contribute monetary and other contributions to Texas A&M? I sincerely hope you do not use this same imaginary evidence in your biology experiments as an Aggie prof and researcher...
