kudos to those of you with enough insight to resist this. $4 billion? Really? REALLY?

How many grads does A&M have? 500,000? That would be every man and woman giving $8,000.
Every single person alive who ever graduated from A&M giving $8,000. Wow.

Why not just double that and make it an $8 Billion- would prob just take one more card holding campaign.

So you're against the idea fundraising? How do you think anything gets done. Other schools have accomplished these kind of capital campaigns. You realize that some people give much MUCH more than 8000?

This is just giving our current fundraising a United "brand." Albeit a pretty weak one...

We've been raising money in the name of vision 2020 for years...

Uhmm, you don't see the difference between an 18 year old making a demand and giving an ultimatum to a HC and demanding that 100,000+ paying customers and supporters perform a stunt without telling them what it is??

Seriously??

The campaign is just stupid. The slogan isn't strong and is pretty lame. And I don't agree with using the fans and students to promote it in this fashion. I'm not against fundraising but this stunt does not sit well with me. So it makes ESPN and everyone scratches their heads and it is a fundraising campaign? One that they aren't defining what they are doing with the $$. They are counting on blind Aggie loyalty here. IMO our university is too large and this entire strategy is also what doesn't sit well, as the very long thread on it here shows. Diploma mill. 80k students, devaluing my degree, etc it's all connected.

So far everything about this campaign, from the wording of the announcements to the design of the materials to the super duper sweet card stunt, looks like the work of a FLO (and in my head, a FLO is defined as an organization for fluffing the resumes of future political interns).

There are four fundamental problems here.

1) what will all this money be used for? Without clear missions to get behind and spend real money on, a lot of people will be very hesitant to support it.

2) asking the target audience to unknowingly participate.
Isn't the target audience the fans themselves? In which case showing something on jumbotron makes sense, so people can evaluate it.

If the target audience was TV watchers, then it is clever to have fans hold up cards. But in this case, there is no reason to be secretive about it and in fact it creates negative vibe, as this thread shows.

3) this is a football game, not a chance to kick off feel-good initiatives.

4) the rumored slogans are not self explanatory and clear, therefore don't even really make sense to hold up. It isn't like people will even understand what it is about just from those slogans.

There is a chance this gets dangerous for lower decks if people throw them as frisbees. I pray this doesn't happen.

Finally. That's not what the OP said originally.

Kind of like the whole fundraising campaign. "Give us money now and we promise to tell you later what we need it for."

This charlie foxtrot has the same smell as the recent marketing campaign to promote the city of College Station - the wizards of smart over at the convention and visitor's bureau hired a marketing firm out of Tulsa to come up with the slogan. The firm is the same outfit that promoted Muskogee with the following zinger: Real. Okie. I kid you not. Guess what the firm came up with for College Station?

Super. Natural. Goodness.

$40,000 for a slogan that begs for Casper the Ghost as the city mascot. Never mind the fact that we pay the C&VB a couple of million dollars a year to promote the city themselves. Not one of them could come up with something better, not to mention realize a stinker when they see one and at least try to cover it up.

We're dealing with the same level of, dare I say, arrogant stupidity here.

Wow. Way to be killjoys over something fun. If you must know, the card stunt will spell out 3 things: ATM (logo), Lead by Example, and If Not You, Then Who? That's it! If folks participate, it will be awesome. And Mr. Klemm has busted ass to ask folks to support it. Look. All universities raise private gifts from donors for all kinds of purposes. And they all have "campaigns" with financial goals - to build focus and excitement. Lead by Example is A&M's third comprehensive fundraising campaign (the first was Capturing the Spirit from 1990-96 and the second was One Spirit One Vision from 2000-06). The counting of "lead gifts" for Lead by Example started in 2012 and has $1.9B in gifts and pledges. The pace of early gifts helps determine the campaign goal. This weekend is the official public launch of the campaign. ALL GIFTS benefiting A&M from 2012 thru 2020 count in this Lead by Example Campaign from your football donation to 12th Man to your annual (unrestricted) gift to Assn. of Former Students to more sizable (restricted) endowment gifts made to Texas A&M Foundation. Restricted means you (donor) decide how it's used and which A&M program it benefits. This might be an endowed scholarship for students from Brazos County majoring in Ag Economics. It might be an endowment to provide extra financial support for faculty or programs in your favorite department or college. Your gift, your choice. So, please support the card stunt today as part of the Aggie Band's halftime show. Thanks and Gig 'em.

I am not a Klemm, but I do know him, and hope he won't mind that I posted. I am very familiar with TAMU fundraising so thought I'd try to help answer some of the questions. I don't typically look at TexAgs so forgive me if I'm not following proper protocol.

I miss the days when football games were about football.
After the "card stunt" can we do the "we've got spirit, yes we do" yell across the field with the student section?
That will fall in line with the crappy production atmosphere that our Saturday's have become.
