Should this come as a surprise to anyone who follows recruiting, even on a part-time basis? Typical high school athlete who happens to have a bunch of stars on paper and in his head. If the HC wants him. he'll give him a call. Cell phone time is cheap now.

I'm sure Sumlin and Chavis will make contact with Malik (Malik's Parents), and give him one shot to switch if he chooses. DMack will sign with the good guys.

"What is a dead period? During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may
not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches
may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead
period. "

Make the conference call Chief and Summy.

Wow, so much butthurt on this thread and so much dumbassedness (most from posters without an Ag tag). The kid wanted to make his decision on the last day of school and wanted to know who is coach would be. His family pushed him towards the bad guys and he caved. He tried to recruit his friends to come with him. WTH is wrong with that?

Sumlin was making a long term decision. Getting Chavis was more important than any recruit. Now that it's done, the same guys Malik was trying to recruit to follow him are likely to head to College Station. He wants to reconsider. We would be idiots if we didn't welcome him with open arms. He's the best player coming out of high school in the state of Texas this year. Moreover, he helps us shore up one of our weakest areas... LB.

Kids read these boards too. The effin boards should be welcoming him with open arms, not trying to drive him away.

Rab83 is dead on. We would be lucky to have him. We should reach out to him immediately.

Thankfully, those involved in our recruiting don't have such a ridiculous mindset. Unbelievable!!

Excellent idea. Lets see what The Chief can do.

I'm hoping that the first thing chavis is doing is visiting with any recruits in the area, and then making phone calls, I hope looch gets some good info on whether or not they call malik

RAB83 is dead wrong on this. I love poster's little treat about the Ag Tag. >50% of Ag Taggers never wanted to go the SEC, still want to play whorn every year, and thought firing Sherman was premature.

Malik's family told Sumlin either (1) tell them who the next DC was or (2) Malik is committing to another school. That's not the way college football works. Malik made his choice. If he can make it good with the A&M staff, so be it. Until then, I'll continue to beat the drum about how trailer-park that family's decisioning was.

Ck and Brakeman will also be the first ones on here next fall complaining about our LB play and lack of talent and depth on that side of the ball, blah blah blah

I haven't really seen anything that Malik Jefferson did that would make me write him off if he didn't want to go to Austin. But then again I don't follow everything high school kids say and then get my feelings hurt when they don't pick the school that I went to

I think the whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. Both entities made a business decision. Malik wanted what he felt was stability or rather the promise of it, where Sumlin wanted to ensure he didn't run off his candidate, (Chavis). I would suspect Malik is having buyer's remorse, and sure his parents made the decision for him (or at least heavily influenced it), but now, he is looking at this hire and realizing that he could potentially be a superstar in the SEC.

I think he'll stay committed with the other school, but it would be silly for Sumlin not to pick up the phone.

Earlier today (yeh, I know it's New Year's Day, but athletic staff is so pumped they WANT to be in the office) ....

Coach Sumlin's Executive Secretary (poking her head into Kevin's office): Excuse me, coach, but that Malik kid has called for the 83rd time today. I let it ring like you told me too, but it is very annoying, and I think it's disrupting football business.

Coach Sumlin: Damn it, that's enough! It's not like I don't have a million things on my plate right now! Call the cops and get them to take a Telephone Harassment report on his butt.

Secretary: Yes sir, will do.

(Later tonight, during the 3rd quarter of the Bama/OSU game, we are stunned to read the following scroll across the bottom of the screen ...

BREAKING: Mesquite, Texas, Police are reporting the arrest of top Texas linebacker recruit Mr. Malik on Class B misdemeanor Telephone Harassment charges. The prosecutor plans to enhance those charges to felony status - somehow. Malik's mother had previously had her son committed to texas university despite the fact he reportedly wanted to play at Texas A&M. texas Coach Strong said he was disappointed, but would have to revoke Malik's scholarship offer due to his program's high ethical standards and rules. Texas A&M DC, John Chavis, dryly commented to ESPN that if Malik were in a Louisiana prison, he could play for the Tigers due to the state's unique prison inmate football furlough program. Malik's mother, also in custody after screaming at the cops and being repeatedly tazed, plans to ask for her son's transfer to the Louisiana State penal system in a one for one swap with another inmate. LSU Coach Lester Miles has asked the Louisiana governor for veto power over the imate who is chosen to go to Texas in the swap with Malik. RINO Governor Rick Perry has vowed to "tie this up in court forever," stating that "Malik will stay in a Texas jail until hell freezes over." Stay tuned for developments.

this is a bit long but good info......

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Per multiple reports, Texas A&M is set to hire LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis for the same role. Shortly after that news broke, a report on a Aggies fan site stated that five-star Texas linebacker commit and spring enrollee Malik Jefferson would reach out to Kevin Sumlin when the hire was made official.
Horns247 caught up with Jefferson on Wednesday at the media luncheon for the Under Armour All-America Game, and his take on the situation is yes, he would talk to Sumlin if the two got on the phone.
But that doesn't mean he's going to back out on his commitment to the Longhorns.
"I'll talk to him. That's not a problem. If he reaches out to me I'll talk to him," Jefferson said. "I'll probably call Coach [Mark] Hagen and ask him what's the deal and all that. I'm not going to be like so interested in them."
When asked Jefferson if there was any chance he'd end up at Texas A&M rather than Texas in the spring Jefferson said, "I don't see myself there."
Jefferson's thoughts on the Chavis hire are that the Aggies will get a good coordinator and that he was "shocked" the long-time SEC coordinator chose to leave Baton Rouge for College Station.
"I didn't know they were going to get Chavis," Jefferson said. "That's pretty big for them. Kudos to them. That's a good guy. Hopefully he can go in and make those guys better."
Jefferson was then asked if he was 100-percent sure he'd be in Austin for the start of the spring semester.
"I'm comfortable with Austin," Jefferson said. "I really am."
The No. 1 ranked prospect in the state of Texas will head to a program coming off of a 6-7 season, which was capped by a loss to Arkansas in AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl. Jefferson said the bowl result doesn't impact his feelings toward Texas, and he again mentioned that he wants to be a reason why Texas returns to the top.
"It was kind of embarrassing and I've been getting ripped about it all week, but I've just got to keep moving," Jefferson said. "I have an eye toward the future and I hope everything works out."
Jefferson has already signed scholarship papers with Texas, which ties the school to him as an athlete on a financial aid agreement. However, he can't sign a letter of intent since he's not a junior college prospect, which means there's nothing he can sign that binds him to Texas except when he begins classes.
Regardless, Jefferson gave every indication he's sticking with the Longhorns, including what he told 247Sports' Brian Perroni when asked if the Chavis hire ultimately changes anything for him.
"No sir," Jefferson said to Perroni. "I'm still committed to Texas. I wouldn't mind talking to Coach Sumlin, but I'm still committed to Texas."

Hey Arnie, yes I remain pretty committed to my position regarding the timing of Malik's decision being really terrible. I'm pretty 'special' myself, but I dont think it's in anyone's best interest to commit without knowing who 'option B' hires for its key position coach. Also, telling the head coach of 'option B' to either reveal the new position coach or I'll pick a different school is disrespectful and reveals you dont have a good handle on an important aspect of athlete-college coach relationships. Do try and stay away from the water tower, Arnie. . .

My freaking goodness why are we still talking about this?

I said months ago that his mamma wants him at Texas and that meant he had about a 90% chance of ending up at Texas. I kept hearing that A&M was the team to beat but never believed a word. Could Malik be that rare kid that ignores his mamma? Sure. Was it likely? No.

If our staff reaches out to him, fine. They should, he is good. But wasting one second as a fan on wishing he changes his mind is a waste of time. If he does, fantastic. But the odds are so long just don't waste time worrying about it fellas.

Who knows what is going on between him, his parents, and coaches.

I don't think he ever verbally committed to us prior to declaring...... UNLIKE "dump truck"

He will fall on the proverbial sword and stay at t.u. rather than have to admit he made a poor choice.

Hell, purple baylol or even baylol would've been a better choice for him than whorn
