Old Ag '74 says it best. I was there as well - I was a white belt - my junior year. The thing that got me at the time was the portion in which the MOB bugles played the same melody that we play at Silver Taps. That, on the heels of the goose stepping was over the top. You had to be there to understand. The narrative of the performance does not do it justice nor does it demonstrate how eggregious it was.

I was at the 1973 game.

And I remember the MOB's performance.

The MOB farted off lots of people and opposing schools with their performances back then so that wasn't unexpected.

Their Nazi goose stepping while they mis-played the War Hymn was what I thought was totally uncalled for and that's what got the biggest reaction from Aggies because of our military heritage.

It was mean-spirited and offensive.

Carl Swierc was the Owl player who returned the KO after we thought we'd come back for the win.

Our KO team was so excited about us taking the late lead in such a frustrating and bitterly fought game that many of them over ran Swierc in their somewhat undisciplined haste to get down the field.

He broke through cleanly and took it all the way for the deciding TD.

Very few Aggie players even had a shot at him because we played it so poorly.

Without that terrible defensive mistake, we'd probably have been too busy celebrating to hold the MOB hostage.

We thought we had it won; we just didn't seal the deal.

And Rice p*ssed us off on multiple levels.

I wasn't sitting near our student section, so I didn't know anything about the aftermath until I read the paper the next day.

I do remember that Aggie RB Skip Walker met and knelt on the field, talking with his older brother who was a Rice LB, after the game before they went to their respective locker rooms.

I believe his name was Cornelius.

They were from Del Valley near Austin.

The PA announcer called attention to their good sportsman-like and brotherly behavior to anyone who was listening, probably to calm tension down.

I went to every game within driving distance back then, so if I'm recalling things incorrectly and mixing stuff up due to the passage of time cut me some slack.

Anyhow, that's what happened from where I saw it.

I don't think we're any more sensitive than anyone else. Certainly not more than sip fans.

There was also a fight on the field in 63 during halftime, didnt last long though. I don't remember what started it.

I too was at the game, although my memory of the event is a little hazy after all the time has passed. I was seated near the goal line just a few rows up from the field. Didn't hear about all the post game stuff until the next day. Never occurred to me at the time that I was witnessing history and would still be talked about fairly regularly 40 years later.

you guys have convinced me, we do need a sense of humor. since we need more of what the mob did back then, maybe we can start bringing in middle school and high school kids with a creepy old man with 100+ facelifts as the featured twirler (heck, maybe Calvin Murphy is free, I know he twirled with mob at least once!).

That would be FREAKING HILARIOUS!!! It worked 40 years ago and almost everyone here thinks it is still SOO CUTE AND FUNNY! We will have every stadium we go to rolling in the aisles with tears rolling down their cheeks, sides hurting and begging us to stop!!!

drove to the 6 yard line when the clock quit working and Bellard sent in 2 running plays...he thought we were on the 1. time ran out after the 2nd one...i was a 17 year old freshman QB starting my 5th game. Saw grown men crying in the dressing room. they were crying mad at halftime. We had them beat twice and didn't win. Cost us a bowl game.

It might've been funnier if we weren't losing 17-0 at the half.

Those that are angry deserve to be and I don't blame them. Everyone born in the 70s-onward wouldn't know the losses of war other than what they've seen in video games. STFU, idiots.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm still astonished at the Ags who think we all need to just "lighten up." You obviously have no concept of context or history.

A lot of the students on the field that day probably had family members who fought in WW2 or Vietnam. There were probably several who had uncles killed fighting the Nazis. My mom was a student at the time, and her brother had been killed in Nam just a few years earlier. She wasn't at that game, thankfully, but I doubt she would have been chuckling at the frivolity if she had been there.

That was a disgrace.

To correct some misinformation. The picture in the Houston paper was at halftime, not after the game. The police escorted the rice band to a locker room after the game and there was no incident after the game.
There was really little to no incident at halftime, the photographers just caught the best.
The yell leaders were able to hold the Aggies from coming over the wall, until they did the spoof on Silver Taps, they turned to look at the field and that is when a former student, Old Ag, came over the wall, and then more followed. They got the band to start playing and kept more from following.

I will say this, A&M was still mostly male, and bigger percentage in the Corps. Only about 12,000 in school at that time. Those students most all had fathers that fought the Germans in WWII and some very probably were on college deferment from going to Vietnam, just missed being drafted, and/or had brothers in Vietnam. Or deceased family from those wars. So for you little pansy sh*theads to talk about how funny the Rice band is GFY.

I was also at the infamous Rice game although I had a very poor view of the halftime show from my seat in the corner of the end zone about six or so rows up from the field. I didn't hear about the post game incident until the next day and didn't know Marvin Zindler was there until just a few years ago. What I do remember very well is a lot of mad people in the stands and a few rushing the field and being restrained by yell leaders. The crowd was already seething by the thought of losing to Rice and the MOB halftime show only added fuel to the fire.

I was at that game too. I've never seen my dad (DVM 56') so mad before or since.

Still angers me thinking about it but tempered knowing the mob will never try to do such a disrespectful dumbass production again.

I was a Senior OD at that game. Squadron Seven were the OD's on the sideline and in that picture in the newspaper. I also helped cut down their Victory Tree. When I have time later tonight, I will start a new thread and tell the story of the ODs and the cutting of the tree. Stay tuned.

Thanks for sharing your story. That must have been an exciting game being a 17 year old freshman quarterback.

It could be worse - someone could've drawn a sword on a bunch of cheerleaders.

We should quit scheduling Rice. Period. For the simple reason we wouldn't have to rehash these MOB outrages every year.

You don't count several hundred Ags surrounding the MOB and causing them to be hauled from the stadium in bread trucks as an incident?

Mostly male, yes, but just barely. My fish class in '73 was about 50/50 male/female. Total enrollment was over 18,000, Corps strength was about 2200-2500. So at best 1/6 Corps and dead elephants

Vietnam was pretty much done by the time most of the 1973-1974 Corps arrived in College Station. 1968 was the peak, and it was headed down. By the time I turned 18 in summer 1973, there were probably less than 100 Americans in Nam.

This was 28 years after the close of hostilities. Think how people would react today if people compared Aggies to Viet Cong or NVA. And that war is 10 years further in the past today than WWII was in 1973.

Maybe folks over-reacted. But maybe the idiots at Rice should have thought a little bit before comparing a Texas College with nearly 1,000 WWII deaths to the people responsible for many of those deaths.
