In the words of Sports Business journalist Darren Rovell of CNBC...

ESPN's 20-year, $300M deal with Texas for the Longhorn Network makes ND look like the Little Sisters of the Poor.

It's no wonder Texas didn't need it's "guaranteed" $20 million/year from the Big 12-2 deal.

The rich get richer.... Yet, their football team still sucked despite having the largest athletic budget.

How in the he$$ did they negotiate something like that? The good I can see coming out of this is that any time the Aggies play the norns and it is broadcast they will get a nice check

That seems like a lot of money for what ESPN is getting. Could it be that tu actually plans to go independent soon and have all of their games televised on this channel?

Rivalries aside, I think you need an orange t-shirt like every other Wal Mart shopper.

And if this channel morphs into the Big 12 channel or the Texas Sports Network, then think of the money for everyone! And think of the additional sports coverage!

You have lost your mind, and have no clue how this works.

Worth the premium to prevent conference realignment, which would open the door to Fox to become a player in CFB.

The conference should get that money and divide it. Or Austin should go independent.

If they want to play us in any sport they can pay 500k per sport.

More Aggie sports on TV - gimme!

Some people seem to think that ESPN is run by idiots and didnt do their homework on whether or not this would be a successful venture. Sure there is risk, but I am sure ESPN did their due diligence and expect to make a healthy return on their investment.

And guess what - everyone in the state of Texas is going to pay for it if you have cable or satellite or FiOS.

I'm not a TV executive, but I just don't see how this works business-wise for ESPN. (it's easy to see how it works for tu)

What advertiser is going to pay for a spot to watch Texas play Iowa State in softball, or a dual tennis match between Texas and Kansas?

This is a huge risk for ESPN in my opinion.

In additon, with the herns now becoming the de facto "Yankees" of the college sporting world, this is likely to increase the number of Aggie supporters as a natural reaction against the herns.

Aggies THIS IS MONUMENTAL

How our administration reacts will determine our relevance in this state for decades

I expect the administration will act appropriately to negotiate their share of the pie.

The advertisers that fund the other 200 channels of crap on tv.

So they 15MM on top of Big 12-2 revenues? How do we compete with that?
Maroon Dawn

So, clearly tu would have rights to their OOC games, but what about conference games? Is the B12 so lacking in balls that they would actually give the sips the broadcast rights to CONFERENCE games? I hope they aren't that stupid to let them make money off the B12 and keep all the money for themselves. If thats the case, the peasants will revolt (hopefully starting with us)

Because if all they have are rights to broadcast OOC stuff...well...who cares? Though it WOULD explain why they are beefing up their OOC. No one would watch Sip vs McNeese or Rice but plenty will tune into sip network to watch them vs ND and BYU.

The Univ. of Texas today will announce a 20-year, $300M deal with ESPN to create the Longhorn Network, the first-of-its-kind channel to broadcast live UT athletic events, shoulder programming and non-sports university content

I can't wait to find out what that content will be.

Remember guys, anything that generates revenue for the university is likely to be approved. Universities love money coming in.

The amount of money involved makes me think ESPN is getting more than this. How likely is it that part of the deal is that tu goes independent and ESPN gets the rights to all of their games? I don't see how the money makes sense otherwise.

Dammit, if $Bill and the other AD's aren't burning up the Fox sports phone lines this morning they should be drawn and quartered. This is a blatant attempt by ESPN to force the big 12 into signing an exclusive deal with them, and the sips got a plea deal.

I know Byrne has been in discussions with Learfield Media and something big is in the works...
