i meant the mileage is not insane. Original idea was 26.2 every day, but i couldn't commit to that amount of time each day. And after seeing how the week went, there's zero chance I could have pulled it off. I definitely would have had to bail.

If you want insane, look at Candice Burt's 50K streak from a while back.

90 miles in a week is pretty insane, though. I acknowlege that 26.2 would be insaner and 50k per day would be insanerer.

if anyone likes awesome sauce, the feed has them for half price...which is pretty fitting since they are half strength

actually, it looks like all of the Spring Gels are half price.

The logistics behind this is what I would struggle with right now. Before kid, maybe it was doable. I think my best year is averaging right around 9mi/day. Now I'm lucky to get 3-4 runs a week.

Candice stuff is nuts. I started following her during the streak and I know she would get sensitive to the questions but just not sure how anyone with a normal job/family could handle giving up that much time each day. She's an interesting follow, she recently had a bike accident and was boasting about how quickly she was able to bounce back and start riding again.

It's disappointing that Spring still hasn't said anything. They took awesome sauce off their site, but that's about it.

won't surprise me if they end up getting sued. I've read multiple accounts of diabetics who had to be pulled off the trail b/c they were basing their blood sugar off of what Spring had advertised on the label. Might be hard to prove (in court) it was directly related to Spring, but it is pretty negligent on Spring's part, IMO.

Nice job on the half marathon challenge. I like silly challenges like that because often times it gives you that extra little motivation to get out the door and get running, and it sounds like that's what it did for you. I hope this is the start of some nice summer training for you!

its funny a memory just popped up on the book of faces from when I was living in NYC....sometimes I forget that these little challenges and such are nothing new to me. I don't know if this was the first or second year I did Race Across the Window, but we had 8 guys trading off every 3 hours, and as a team, we rode non-stop for a week on a trainer in the window of a triathlon store on 14th Ave.

It was a long, long week. Riding for 3 hours a day was the easy part. The rest of my week entailed getting up at 3:50 am each morning and working from 9:30a-8:15pish every day. I even decided to throw a half marathon into the mix. I was fatigued and dragging for 7 full days, but I wouldn't change it if I could.

The ride was quite surreal at times. After the first 20 minutes or so of riding, Shane would be sleeping soundly as I pedaled away on the computrainer. Each day, I watched the city wake up from behind a glass window. It was as if the outside world was the store window display I was looking at, rather than the opposite. Watching the city wake up was a really cool experience. People walked by. Some were curious, some gave thumbs up or waved. Others stood and watched a little
too long--creepy. Then there were the people who had to be stereotypical New Yorkers. They walked by and didn't acknowledge that anything was even going on.


Saturday was probably my favorite of the days, simply because of the craziness of it all. I had an adjusted shift from 4-7 am, rode 56 miles, jumped on a train, and went to run the Brooklyn Half. The running felt way too easy. I cruised through to a 1:36:xx finish without really even trying too hard. I thought sunday would be rough, but I knocked out 54 miles without much trouble. Monday started out rough, but ended up being my best day of riding. Tuesday, I was rewarded with a day of soft-pedaling. I only had to hold about 14.5 mile per hour pace, which resulted in an easy 37 mile day.

we do have a few projects that we'll knock out while Kyle and I are in WI in a few weeks, but those aren't really "challenges" per se.

Just took a look at the WSER entrant list. It should be an interesting race this year. I thought people were joking when they mentioned Walmsley, but there he is. Women's field is stacked too.

Might depend on the race and how well stocked aid stations are. I like to rely on ASs so I only do a drop bag every third AS. So maybe 5-6 if no ASs overlap. With a rough pace idea I plan night clothing and morning clothing changes if temp differences dictate.

It's Badger 100, so not technical at all, but it will be hot. Highs will probably be in the 90s and lows in the 60s. I'm going to have to reapply sunscreen every few hours. That being said, also if anyone has any good sunscreen recommendations for when you're already sweaty, I'll take them. I usually have a travel size of coppertone or something in my pack, but I might need something better for an all day deal.

While it's certainly possible that it'll be in the 90s, I'd guess you are going to be in the 80s, if not lower if the right weather pattern hits. Average high for the madison area in july/aug is low 80s. I'm not saying you shouldn't wear sunscreen by any means, but the sun is less intense up there. I've not been on the course or that rails to trails, but the ones I run on in WI are very shaded. Because they actually have trees in that part of the world. That said, the area around Madison is dairy land, so could go through a lot of pasture type landscape. You've probably already done the research, so maybe I'm way off.

If you go through any sort of trees/shrubbery/wet areas, the mosquitoes and horse flies will be your biggest issue. That's the biggest reason I've not done kettle moraine.

People have said it was more exposed than they thought it would be. There's also a detour on the road where they are doing trail maintenance on a tunnel. I'm the color of a vampire, so I'll burst into flames if I'm in the sun too long without sunscreen.

for stateside, they dropped grindstone. other than that, they are the same as last year. Instead of guaranteeing top 3 at black canyon and canyons, i'd have preferred a third race.

none of this surprises me too much, the golden ticket races/season just aren't what they use to be. I understand the need to expand outside the US, but it was way more exciting when everything was packed into the first half of the year.

Probably a long shot, but my brother-in-law is looking for pacers for Angeles Crest 100. We are both running, but no guarantee we are able to stay together. I'm running "solo" so not allowed pacers or crew. He has a couple people who are crewing, but no pacers currently. If you know anyone who is in cali and would want to pace, let me know. The race is Aug 3.

i remembered why i swore off the captain karl's races years back. those things are miserable. but that wasn't the reason things didn't go well.

i dropped at the 30k mark. a couple weeks ago, i did something to my knee playing with the kids. I thought it was getting better and had been running on it, but had only done road and very smooth, non-technical trail. Well, pedernales is anything but non-technical. By mile 9, I was essentially walking most stuff b/c my knee was bothering me so much. It wasn't incredibly painful..probably a 4 or 5 out of 10, but the knee just didn't feel very stable. I ran what little I could, but decided to call it a day after one loop to keep from doing more damage. Plus, I had trail with with Tejas Trails yesterday, so selfishly, it gave me more time to sleep before heading back out into the woods and sweating my ass off.

the good news is, the knee doesn't feel any worse than it did before saturday. bad news is, i have zero idea what is going on and no time to get to a doctor. flying to el paso for work in the morning. and we leave for wisconsin this weekend. I'm going to take the week off from running, and maybe do some light spinning on a bike. then we'll see how things feel.
