Sucky situation for all involved. My understanding is the forecast for temps/conditions were hovering right on the threshold for go/no go but was favorable all day and early evening. And then it didn't cool off as much as expected overnight and so they were forced to cancel.

Not the official measurements but it was supposed to be 66 overnight and it was 70 at 5 am at my house.

Cue Texans calling Minnesotans soft but it was the right call. Summit Ave would have been a catastrophe today in this sun and humidity and could have escalated to a serious situation. And I can't blame them for trying to make it happen.

A lot of people want to still run even if they aren't going to have optimal performance. Some of us know we are slow in any conditions and are ok with that.

I don't think they had a choice. The "black flag" conditions are measurement based and insurance/permitting are likely tied to a "safe" race and flag status.

Agree. And I'll add something about heat index. I suspect that everything we know about heat index applies to stationary people. Anecdotally, we have these mornings in Houston with 80 degrees, 100 % humidity, and a real feel of 94. If I wait to do my run until early evening, the temperature might be 98 with a real feel of 102. Almost inevitably, I run a faster pace at the higher heat index. The exertion in the higher humidity conditions gives the sweat nowhere to go. If I were sitting in the shade, the morning conditions would be much more pleasant, but for running, the humidity seems to have an exponential effect.

Anyone running the BCS Oktoberfest on the 15th? I'm running the 10K and hoping for a fun day!

I was planning to run the 10k but caught a nasty respiratory virus that knocked me off my training a couple weeks back. Slowly moving back in. Was up to running 4 miles at a time and last time I ran I was really struggling at the 2 mile mark again. So I'll find another 10k to do later in the winter.

Thought about still doing it and just walking as much as I need to, but running the 10k nonstop is a pretty decent goal for myself at this point so I am going to put off an actual signup until I think I can actually accomplish that.

Tracksmith running clothes are pretty nice.

I personally don't care about the singlet. I had a few friends buy Boston gear without actually qualifying. I wouldn't buy Boston stuff for years I didn't run the race but I also don't care if others do. Anyone can buy the celebration jackets. I've seen families where everyone buys the jacket and wears it around Boston during the race weekend.

Ran St. George yesterday. I'll do a full race report once I'm not just on my phone but it was a great experience. Much tougher than it looked on paper but it was well organized and the volunteers were incredible.

St. George Marathon, St. George Utah

Saturday race because I assume the Mormons don't want to do a big event on Sunday. The whole town shows up for this thing. It's a really big deal for them. Everywhere we went, they asked if we were running.

The weather was beautiful. Got to the bus around 3:45am to be driven up to the start. If you sign up for this race, so it early so you don't get the super early bus times. They drive you out of town to this big dirt parking lot. They've got big lights set up, tons of bathrooms, and probably about 100 stacks of logs for fires. As people show up, the fire department comes along and lights fires for everyone to sit around. It was probably in the low 50s and a bit windy, so it was pretty chilly to me. Had a good time talking to other runners around the fire until it was time to get ready to go.

They had a drone show at the starting line. They did some formations and the marathon logo, then the drones lit up the countdown for the race.

The race had about 2000 ft in elevation drop. There were 3 big hills on the course at 7, 8, and 18. These hills felt like they were going on forever, and there were dips right before the hills, so you really couldn't tell how big they were from a distance. I will say though, the aid stations were very well placed so that you always had an aid station either directly before or after the big hills. The volunteers were excellent too. They even had people to rub icy hot on your legs. I saw several people throwing up on the side of the road and a lot of people cramping up. I don't know if it was a preparation issue or the heat (it wasn't that hot - maybe 60s). Another issue was the full sun. The course is fully exposed the entire way.

There were a few people along the course here and there. When you ran by developments, people were everywhere. When we came back into town, you could tell this was the community event of the year.

I went out pretty fast and was feeling great. The lower temperatures and the rolling hills were great. Then I hit the first big hill. It was rough and it felt like it was straight up. My splits were all over the place. I bombed the downhills as best I could to make up for the time on the ups. That strategy worked out really well until I got to town and the road went flat. My legs were jelly the last 2 miles, but my second fastest mile was mile 24. I felt like I was flying into town. My slowest miles were 25 and 26. My legs just didn't know what to do. I never felt like I hit a wall, my legs just failed me.

I finished in 4:35:10. It was a little slower than I wanted but it was still almost a 20 minute PR. I stopped to go to the bathroom a few times, I got icy hot on my legs 3 times, and I walked through most of the aid stations. All that probably cost me at least 5 minutes, so overall I'm ok with it. I'm not where I want to be, but I'm also not where I used to be.

This race was really well organized. It was well supported, the community was great, and the volunteers were all top notch. I'd definitely recommend it, but go in knowing what you're in for. There aren't many races that I would do a second time, but I'd consider this one again.

St George is/was on my list but my right calf doesn't do downhill races well.

Awesome job! Congrats!

Did some speed intervals this morning (800mx7) and ended up PRing my 10k (50:15) despite that including my 800m warm up and 800m cooldown. Feeling like my goal of sub 1:50 half is definitely achievable after that.

Did the armadillo dash a few times a while back, and while it was an interesting route - I'm much more excited for this one. Who doesn't love running through campus?

Have a great half! Totally agree with you about running through campus and the Kyle Field finish. Last year's finish resulted in a photo-finish between me and my 16 year old son, with him crossing just ahead of me. One of my favorite pictures b/c he's in his HS XC uniform and is 100% focused, while I'm running hard but laughing and saying 'don't let an old man beat you!!!'.

He and I agreed to run our own races/paces this year. So I expect he'll leave me in the dust for the first 5K, then it'll be a battle for him to hang on and me to catch-up in the second half. And if I catch him, I'll need to have something left to stretch a fast pace before the final .25 or so. No way my 50-something year old legs can beat a 17 year old kid's legs over a short distance haha

Fun BCS Oktoberfest today! A little brisk, but fun! Finished over a minute faster than my target time (all over the last 5K). Really fun event!

Been getting more into running recently. Does anyone run every day? If so, how? I ran seven miles yesterday and made it about half a mile today before I had to quit because my legs were heavy and sore.

Even hard core running plans have a rest day or two every week.

Better question would be how do you build to running even 6 days/week. And the answer is slowly, deliberately

You have to build up to it and most of those days have to be recovery/easy days.

You need to build up to an every day running plan. That takes time.

But also, it's more than likely you're running too fast day to day too. When I'm at my peak, I take a day off every two weeks but my pace on most of those runs is around 90 seconds slower than my marathon pace which is about 2:20 slower than my 5k pace. Take that with a grain of salt but I would all but bet you need to slow down significantly.

So follow up question would be when do you lift your legs? Seems like if you're running that much it would be hard to do both.

I run 6 days a week and always 1 day off per week. I think there is a lot of benefit (physically and mentally) to have a day off.

I don't really lift legs. I do a lot of plyometric work but I rarely step into a gym with the intent on working my legs.
