Does anybody else get wired while fasting? I have been doing what amounts to a daily 24 hour fast... eating only supper to satiety and not snacking. Been doing this for about 10 days now and I'm having trouble sleeping some nights. Just can't turn my brain off, and I'm usually a head-hits-the-pillow-and-I'm-out type of guy.

Same here. I'm about at the same duration as you are. 22-23 hour fast at about 10 days.

My physical activity is at least at the same place if not increased, and I find that I'm having trouble sleeping around the 3am time frame. It's not terrible - but not typical and annoying - esp since I get up at 450 and seem to in deep sleep at that point now which is unusual.

But honestly, I hadn't tied the two together. I'm still not sure they are related.

The video of the asian doc explained this a bit. Something to the effect that your body is hyping you up so you have enough energy to go out and find more food. Instead of shutting down where you most certainly wouldn't be able to find food. At least that's what I gathered.

Nope. Believe it or not, I can tell when I'm hungry.

I did when I had my first extended fast, from day 2 to 4, but since then, I do regular 2 day fasts and haven't had the same "wired" feeling. I do feel alert and more energetic than normal, but not quite to the same level. I'm thinking of doing another extended fast to start off February, so I'll post back if it happens again with a longer fast.

I wake up easier in the mornings and am ready to go. I've always been one to stay up late at night and fight the morning. No longer.

I did some research yesterday and it appears the wakefulness is pretty common and due to noradrenaline ramping up in the fasted state. I got up a 5 yesterday am, had a crossfit workout, and didn't eat all day. Drank a bunch of water, stayed up until 11:15 playing call of duty, and slept like a baby until 7:30 this am.

Tailgate,

just wanted to write a note on here to say a quick thank you for starting this thread.

Quick background: had a job change about 6 months ago that made us move cities. I saw a couple of pictures of myself from the end of summer that I wasn't happy with, and decided I needed to start trying to lose weight. I had no idea where to start, but just started lifting a few times a week and trying to watch a little of what I ate.

Fast forward 3 months to christmas - I had been working pretty hard and lost about 10 or so pounds. So that was good but I had about another 40 to go, so I knew it was going to be a long process.

I read this thread, and started thinking about doing IF, and it didnt seem that hard. I officially downloaded the Zero calories app on January 18th.

Since then, I have averaged 17 hours and 11 mins fasting per day (with a couple of 23.5 hour fasts, and a few days where I didnt make it to my goal of 16 hours). Since January 18th, I have lost another 11 pounds just by modifying when I was eating and trying to get 1 day a week where I am skipping breakfast and lunch. It really isnt that hard, and its made a huge difference in my life. In a month (and with less workouts due to a nagging injury), I have lost more weight than I had the previous 4 months of working out pretty hard 3-4 times a week. IF has truly changed the way I think about things.

Let me recommend to those starting out - download an App! It is a huge mental thing for me. Once I hit that "start fasting" button, I dont want to have to open the app to start the timer again so that I can have a post-dinner snack or quick dessert. It has made a huge difference to me.

I'm going to post this in both IF threads, but I wanted to post here first to say thank you. Your story changed something in me, and gave me a new approach, and I appreciate it. I am going to try to lose another 20 or so pounds, and I think it is definitely doable using this approach.

Thanks to you both, and I am thrilled that you are having success too. Like I've said, after so many years of trying various things that did not give lasting results, when I stumbled onto IMF I had to share. It's the real deal!

Add me to that list as well as my sister.

I'll say this, your advice and story is inspiring (and I've already lost 100lbs in a year). I'd be honored to replicate your success with IMF.

Thank you for this thread! I read Dr Fung's "The Complete Guide to Fasting" a couple of years ago and was convinced by the science (he's the Asian doc in the videos mentioned above) but didn't have the willpower to start. Now I do! Hoping I can replicate your success.

Here's the book if anyone wants it; it is an awesome resource. He covers most of it in his videos; I just like being able to find specific stuff asap and I'm not a video watcher.

Awesome, I'll buy it when it comes out.

Quick update: Started working out in September around 245, got down to about 235 by mid-January of this year when I read this post. Have since lost 30+ pounds by following (more or less) Tailgate's PDF. Not quite as stringent on my fasting days (I usually dont get anywhere near 500 calories, but just limit to one decently healthy meal a day on those days, and 2 meals on non-fasting days).

My family still thinks I am a bit crazy when I don't eat breakfast on the weekends with them. At work it is easy to skip breakfast. It's a little more difficult on the weekends when I usually cook for the kids, but they understand, and I still enjoy having breakfast with them. I still spend time with them at breakfast but just enjoy my coffee while they eat.

I am looking forward to breaking through the 200 pound barrier hopefully in a couple of weeks. About 3 pounds off and if the pace holds, maybe next week. I havent been under 200 pounds since my sophomore year of college ~15 years ago.

I'm sure you're tired of sending PDFs by now, but could I also get a copy of it? I'm interested in learning more about it as I first thought IMF was just a fad that would eventually go away. My e-mail address is:

Just emailed you both a link.

The book should be done in a month or so and you can buy it for $.99 as a Kindle book for the first month. I've been working hard on it and it's already twice as long as this PDF but honestly this is everything you need. My goal is not to make money it's to spread the word.

Tailgate,

You've done some excellent work here.

I've come to realize during my weight loss odyssey that eating like we did for the first million years of our existence - instead of the last hundred - is the key to health - which means mostly meats and clean whole foods along with periods of fasting to simulate when we couldn't find / track down food.

It's either the way we evolved or the way God designed us (take your pick) - but it's how we're naturally built.
