the ftp is built into the 4 week program, so you'll see it in there.

i think you test at the beginning and then at the end to see your progress.

You can also go to "Classes" at the bottom of the screen and then in the search bar in the top right, search "FTP Test". There are several to choose from, but the structure is all the same, just the instructors and music will be different.

Be sure to take an FTP warm-up ride first and then, if necessary, let your heart rate come back down (but don't cool off). You want to be warmed up and ready to go full bore as soon as the FTP test starts. You don't want to come in cold and take half the test to get warm/loose.

The concept of FTP is based out of measuring your maximum aerobic output for 1 hour. Your body has various energy pathways that can fuel shorter more intense efforts, but when you get to longer efforts, out to 1 hour and beyond, you are getting almost all of your energy from aerobic pathways (i.e. burning fat, carbs, and oxygen). As you train for longer endurance efforts, your body becomes more efficient at carrying oxygen in your blood and distributing and using oxygen in your muscles to generate higher power output for the same effort.

So athletes used to go out periodically and ride a 1 hour time trial to measure their FTP, but doing that takes a lot out of you and takes time to recover from before you can go back to a normal training load. Instead, most athletes will do a 20 minute test or 2x8 min tests and apply a correction factor to estimate their FTP. Once you have that measuring point, you can use it to set zones (1 through 7) that you can use to guide your training efforts. Long intervals in lower zones will help build your aerobic base, shorter mid-high zone efforts will help lift your anaerobic threshold power, and short high intensity efforts followed by recovery periods will train your heart rate to recover faster after hard efforts.

The easiest way to find the FTP tests is to either do the discover your power zones program. Or you can search for the classes by filtering your search for 20 min duration and power zone as the type. However, you want to be warmed up and ready to go when the class starts, so it is always recommended to take at least a 10 or 15 minute power zone warmup class beforehand. You can search for those the same way. As was said above, almost everybody undershoots on their first test. That is why it is valuable to do the slow ramp up over time for your first effort, because when you get to the last 2-3 minutes and see what you had left in the tank, it gives you a better estimate of where you should consider starting next time.

Once you do your first test, ride a few "power zone endurance" rides to get a feel for what the easier end of your zones feels like, then ride a few short "power zone" classes to get a look at the upper zones. Then try the FTP again when you have a better feel for what you can sustain for 20 minutes and you will likely see a pretty big jump in your FTP. Once you get that 2nd test, things should get much more challenging and the real work of improving your FTP will begin.

Ladies & Germs (CVV saying), #400 is upon us. I am going to be doing a live class for it, and the options are 1) 45 min PZ Max Wed @ 5:30 AM CT or 2) 60 min PZ Sat @ 7:00 AM CT...

1) Which should it be?
2) Anyone care to join?

I am leaning towards the PZ Max ride

Got on this morning and click what I thought was a PZE ride with Christine and it turned out to just be regular PZ. I did not hit those zone 6 moments, just stuck to zone 3. I really like her, but don't really enjoy her music.

I've already mentioned it but I got the bike a little over a month ago, and started the Discover Your Power Zones program. First week of it I only had an average output of 85 on the FTP test and was in the worst shape of my life. Well, one month later I just took the test again and my average is up to 119. Amazing how much better I feel and can even see I'm physically starting to look better in such a short period of time. Long way to go but not too shabby a start

So the bike shows "delivered" today, but nothing was delivered. I called them up and they weren't sure why the status said that, but confirmed nothing went out for delivery because the distribution center was out of bikes. Now I have to wait for them to get more bikes in.
Still no bike. Apparently they're still out of stock.

What has delivery time been for others that have ordered recently?

We were initially told 3 weeks then got scheduled for delivery within a week. That was rescheduled a couple of times and then it eventually showed up after just over 2 weeks. I know others that got theirs working a couple of days.

Interesting. Wonder if I can do this by threatening to cancel since I don't even have a delivery date for my bike yet.

You should be able to get a refund...says something like people who haven't gotten bike or have ordered in last 30 days are eligible for it. $350+ tax refund is pretty legit.

Bike is worth it either way.

Just joined the #TexAgs group. Username is benhereforyears

Got back from vacation in mid-July and walked into a 7 week disaster at work and have barely ridden. Desperately trying to get my legs back.

Can anyone give me insight into the PowerZonePack stuff? I joined the tag because I do almost exclusively PZ rides (with the exception of Kendall's Metal Rides for some self-abuse), but there seems like a lot of extra metrics y'all are using.

I'm new to it. They have challenges where you get on a team and compete against other ones - it's definitely making me ride more often. The current one is in week 3 of 8.

To me it's just a bunch of motivated people helping each other stay accountable. I think there are cool metrics/ride previews that just make things a little nicer, but the value is in the teams/challenges. I'm sure others see it differently.

I enjoy the structure of it all. Just waking up and having there be no guess work about what workout I'm supposed to do.

The website is Power Zone Pack. You can create a free account and sync your rides using your Peloton login information. If you pay for a subscription, you can get access to their advanced metrics/charts/graphs/etc. I honestly can't remember at this point which ones are free and which ones are subscription only. It's a pretty well put together site, so I didn't have any issue throwing them some money for all the bells and whistles.

The people that run Power Zone Pack put together challenges that typically are 8 weeks in duration (they also do some mini challenges between the 8-week challenges). They are free to sign-up for, and they provide the complete structure based on your selection of 3, 4, or 5 rides/week. When you register for the challenge and select your number of rides/week, they'll put you on a team. As you do the rides each week and check them off on the website, you accrue points for your team. The scores are then normalized and ranked.

The biggest attraction for me is I don't have to sit and try to decide which ride I want to do each day. I have my entire week already mapped out. There are also opportunities for "Extra Credit" rides to earn your team more points. One has to be PZ ride, but the other can be almost anything else (even a yoga or strength class).

Oh yeah, and the challenges definitely produce results if you follow them.

Very cool. I just joined up on a free sub to get a taste of what it's all about. Probably won't be long until I subscribe. I'm a data junkie anyway, but the idea of not having to think about what's next is biggest for me.

Also, keep in mind that the ride schedules describe the "core" rides. So a 3 ride/week schedule has 3 "core" rides, plus an optional "accelerator" rides and up to two optional "extra credit" rides. So to get full points for your team on a "3 ride" Team, you will have to ride 6 rides per week. But most teams don't take it too seriously, and whatever you are able/willing to ride is fine.

As somebody said, for me it is the structure of knowing what I am going to ride and approximately when that I enjoy about the challenges.

Well I accidentally did the first day of my Challenge today before signing up, so that's good at least.

Question for everyone... has anyone had any major issues with their bike? I have not been able to get metrics to show up on the bottom of the screen all day. The connection is solid next to the bike, and next to the flywheel. Not sure what else to try...

Did a hard reset, unplugged from the wall, checked connection at both ends, sensor down by flywheel turns on when the bike does... kind of at a loss at this point.

We looked into doing the swap of our bike for the new Bike+. There were a couple of features that stood out and made it appealing, primarily the auto resistance increase/decrease in class. This turns out to only be available on live classes, not for catalog classes.
That along with the fact that you have to keep your old bike after they bring the new one. No problem, except they charge you the $2500 +tax for the new, and only refund the purchase price of the old once they pick it up. Could be days. Could be months. They don't know how long it'll be.
We decided against it, as we are happy with what we have.
Just wanted to pass on what we learned today. Good luck to those that decide to make the swap.
