I miss the Hill's that was on the Seawall.......and playing football in the mud and stickers at Crockett. Oh......and going crabbing on East Beach when you could go down there without having to pay, or the same on West Beach when you could drive from the end of the seawall to San Luis Pass.

Rudy & Paco's is another must try. It's at 21st & Post Office next to the Opera House. Lots of people eat here before watching an opera or play. Good seafood and steaks with a South American flare. They serve complimentary plantains with a green sauce and a pico de gallo sauce.

How could I forget about my boy Paco??? He and I go way back. Long story short. I was 18 and got invited to an Astros game. A bunch of guys that know my dad chartered a bus. They got me stinking drunk on the way up. We stopped at Heartbreaker's on the way back. I had trouble getting in until a guy named Ron Vuy stepped in a said I was his son. They finally let me in the club and the guys still call me Ron Vuy's son to this day. So if you run into Paco (he'll be the well dressed, friendly, short guy sitting people) tell him Ron Vuy's son sent you!

Cafe Michael Burger is good for kids, I guess?

Kids are more than welcome. It is very casual. The tables and chairs are plastic so you can go straight from the beach if you like.

If I had a nickel for all the stickers I pulled out at Crockett! Lots of soccer games and baseball practices on that site. Did you participate in any of the "Turkey Bowls"? That was going strong for a couple years when I was in HS.

Before the San Luis went up I remember riding 3-wheelers up the hill. We also had some pretty scary adventures exploring the inside of the fort.

We have vacationed all over the US, including Maine, Santa Fe, Pensacola and all the fun places in Colorado, but Galveston is our very favorite place ever. Very quaint, we love going when it's NOT tourist season. I am sure we'll retire there some day. We ran across an eating place in the middle of a neighborhood called Shrimp 'n Stuff.....many locals and not touristy at all. Great food. They got a Star Bucks several years ago....now they have everything we need!!

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!!

Ok, if you like Galveston....that is fine, but lets not get carried away.

Get on Seawall Blvd and head west. At the end of seawall were you curve off the coastline you'll go about another mile and it's on your right.

The founder of Cafe Michael Burger just passed away a week or two ago, but they're back open now.

McInnis,

Do you know how he died? If it is the same guy I think it is, he could only be in his 50's.

I want to say it was complications from cancer, but I can't totally remember. It was in the Galveston Daily News recently.

Haven't been to Sonny's in years; Used to go with my folks down to Galveston to visit my uncle Vandy and my brother and I used to always play pool and shufflle board while my folks caught up with him and Aunt Sue. Is the quarter still stuck on the floor infront of the pinball machiene?

Yes; but he isn't my actual uncle; just one of those close family friends that gets called an uncle kinda deal

Don't know him, but know of him. My brother worked part-time at KGBC during HS. Figured it had to be him. I don't know of anyone else called Vandy. :-)

My mom worked for him there as a reporter after she graduated from college

And I grew up right across the street from him when he lived in Cedar Lawn. His front yard looked like a jungle back then. It was a cool yard for us youngins to play in.

How strong a storm will it take to take out all those new condos down there at the pass?
Smittyfubar

My brother did some of the electrical in some of the condos down there. He said they were not the strongest things and only rated to stand 125 MPH winds.

Wouldn't find me spending 300,000+ dollars for 800 square feet of something that probably won't stand the next category 2 or 3 hurricane.

Well it won't take much of a storm to destroy the Beach Town subdivision going up on the East End Flats near condo road. They are building on the southside of the seawall... meaning no protection. Freaking incredible!

Ok, y'all are making me miss Galveston. I don't live there, but my mom use to take my brother and I there at least once a year. And now, my good friends BTHOB4T12 and McInnis03 live there! I need to come visit soon. Is my room still cockroach free? haha...
BTHOB4T12
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep, no roaches here.

Just some anti-war protesters at my surf spot.

I know how to get rid of them...

1. put on a poncho
2. stand right in the middle of them
3. start feeding the seagulls

Let the poop fest chase them off to another spot.

haha...

Did he ever do anything with the ol flagship hotel? That thing is old; my mom talks about how her office was in there when she was the Galveston Bureau Reporter for KHOU back in the day.

The transaction with the Flagship is taking place over the next 4 (it was 5) years and will become Tillman's possession I believe in 2011. At that time he plans a full renovation along with the rumored addition of a Kemah like fun-park.

Has anyone looked underneath the Flagship in the last few years. Last time I looked about 4 or 5 years ago, they had "watchout for falling debris" signs underneath it. If nothing has been done about that, I don't see it surviving a hurricane if we have one in the next few years. It looked bad underneath. I'm surprised it hasn't been condemned.

We've stayed there every summer for the past several years. The husband refers to it as the Motel 6 of the gulf coast. I can remember going to the club it used to have when I was in college, but that was long, long ago.

It's old and somewhat run down, but we go there to fish off the pier and there's not anywhere else to just walk out the door and fish like that there that I know of.

I caught a small hammerhead shark and several small black tip sharks off that pier (actually off the parking lot) so I don't swim there anymore, and yes, the watch for falling debris signs are still there.
