any suggestion from you BOI's before we head back this summer?
FYI - Everyone of my suggestions are not touristy. Lots of locals eat here.
Casual:
Mosquito's - Across from The Original Mexican. Kind of a trendy healthy deli. Lot's of medical people from UTMB eat here. Good soups too.
Sonny's Place for really good bar food. I'm a little biased, but I strongly recommend trying this place. Good for the entire family.
Cafe Michael burger is good.
Mario's on Seawall or 61st for good italian (especially the pizza). Also try DiBellas.
El Nopalito's for mexican. This place was the Holy Grail of mexican food for me. I would eat there two to three times a week. Best tortillas in the world. Seriously. The owners have recently passed away, but the new owners are slowly getting back to the way they were. I think they rehired the cook.
A lot of people like The Original Mexican. It is a favorite of some of my family members, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
Also try El Gusto on Broadway.
For really good breakfast burritos you can't go wrong with any of the following:
El Nopalito's - get the surprise burrito. I dream of these sometimes.
The Donut Shoppe (49th/Broadway) My little league baseball coach owns the place. Get the Bronco burrito (chorizo, eggs, beans, potatos, and cheese - unbelievable) It is a really small place. I recommend picking up unless you don't mind a quaint setting.
LaEstacion - On 25th St across from City Hall. (Good for lunch too). They have really good carne guisada. On a side note, most of my hispanic friends up here in Colorado have never heard of carne guisada. For the Tex-Mex challenged it is akin to beef stew, but it is really thick. It is served on a plate, not in a bowl. Put it in a warm tortilla and kiss Heaven.
El Jardin - Their surprise burrito ain't too shabby either.
Be sure to call in advance to these mexican joints. A lot of them close at 2pm.
A little more dressy:
The best secret in Galveston is Shearn's in the Moody Gardens hotel. It is a little pricey, but worth it if you want that extra touch. Hands down the best place for a romantic sunset. We go here everytime I'm in town. Chef Urs makes the best lobster bisque I've ever had. Also his Filet Mignon and bernaise sauce is off the chart.
Clary's - It's located right across the street from the Galveston Daily News as soon as you cross the causeway. He is a little proud of his food, but his style is very different. He kind of has a cajun flare. Try the grouper if he has it. They serve spicy boiled shrimp as a complimentary appetizer. Very tasty!
I agree with the Benno's comment. His restaurant isn't very good. The funny thing is though, his catering is really good.
That's all I got for now. I'll add more as I remember.
