You may not, but I love my Gtown brown. Just so you know.

The Texas Coast is vastly underrated. Galveston is a neat little town.

I'm a BOI (Born on Island for those not familiar with the term). I was born and raised in G-town. I loved it growing up and love to visit about 5-6 times a year. However, after living in big cities (Houston, San Antonio, Austin, & Denver) for the last ten years I don't see myself living in Galveston until they put me out to pasture. I love G-town. Things never change. I don't feel like I'm missing much. Twenty years from now I'm sure I will consider moving back and it will be like I never left. Hopefully the muni golf course will be looking good by then. I hear Moody Gardens will be contracting the maintenance. Should be sweet when they get their hands on it!

You can include me in the list of BOIs. Currently live in Texas City but make it to the island about once a week to help my Mom with stuff.

Fairway Ag, the deal with Moody Gardens taking over the muny (I play there once a week during the summer) hasn't been finalized yet. Don't know what the holdup is.

I am not a BOI but have lived in Galveston since I was eight except for my years in Aggieland. I have more sand between my toes than most BOIs. I love it here and will probably die here. The only other place I would consider moving to would be College Station after I retire so I can watch all the Aggie athletics. The only thing I don't like is all the tourist in the summer, but realize they suppoet the economy. I have to do some business in Houston on occassions and I don't see how people can put up with that traffic. It takes me less than ten minutes to get to work driving down the seawall.

Sounds like your old man is on the take.

We were there for a conference this week and ate breakfast at a Mexican place on the Seawall just south of Broadway. Anybody know the name of it? I got pretty nostalgic for Galveston this week. Sea Ag '94.

WimberlyAg, if the place you are referring to is near the intersection of Broadway and Seawall Blvd. it's called Chico's Paradise.

That would technically be north of Broadway. If it was in a small shopping center with a giant condo being built behind, it might have been Chico's. BUT-

if it was a smaller place and south of Broadway, just across the street from Mario's it might have been Gordo's (I think)--more of a family owned restaurant than Chico's.

We turned off Broadway going south and it was right there. There is a restaurant and next door is an ice cream refreshment stand, looks like same owners. They only accept cash but was authentic with meals from different states in Mexico. I was really bummed that Yaga's was closed and I didn't get to Bennos or the Poop Deck. My favorite hangout while in school, Toucan's, I guess has been closed for several years. Galveston has a kind of seedy appeal to me that Nuevo Laredo has. I miss it.

Another BOI here. Love the island. It has it's drawbacks but I love to return and visit. Wouldn't trade my home in College Station for it. Besides, I think I will keep my son in CSISD and not GISD.

What's up FairwayAg

Not much bro. Didn't realize you were still in College Station. Must be nice! I'll be down for Christmas. I hear Yaga's is open again. Gotta drop in for a cold one.

We have vacationed all over the US, including Maine, Santa Fe, Pensacola and all the fun places in Colorado, but Galveston is our very favorite place ever. Very quaint, we love going when it's NOT tourist season. I am sure we'll retire there some day. We ran across an eating place in the middle of a neighborhood called Shrimp 'n Stuff.....many locals and not touristy at all. Great food. They got a Star Bucks several years ago....now they have everything we need!!

We have 4 Starbucks now!

One by the Strand, one across the street from Randalls on 61st, one IN Randalls on 61st, and today the new on opened in Kroger on Seawall!

Shrimp 'n Stuff rocks! That was the place to go for lunch in high school if you didn't have a car. Of course, that was back when Ball High had off campus lunch. It is still great. Introduced my fiance to it a little while back and she loves it. Good amount of great food for not a lot of money. Over on 39th and, I believe, Ave "O".

try living on that rock and you might think otherwise. all of you who love that place deserve each other.

I often wish it would fall into the gulf like atlantis.

[edited for spelling. not content. I'm still hoping that place sinks to the gulf floor.]

Oh yeah, a little "did you know?"

When Cabeza de Vaca got to Galveston in 1528 he named the island, "Isla de Malhado," or "Isle of Misfortune"

He nailed it! Almost 500 years later and it's still a pile of Sh...

Well, it's only fitting that a dude named "head of the cow" gave something else he came in contact with a less than desirable name.

Trust me, I've seen an Isle of sh... and it's definitely not Galveston. It's Grand Isle, LA. Galveston is one of a kind, and any true Texan should treasure it's existance.

I grew up in Galveston. When I start thinking about it, I check the webcams and wish I was having a beer on the beach.

Longhorn94,

Thanks for bringing up Shrimp 'n Stuff. I can't remember the last time I ate there, but I have lots of memories. Good Po'Boys and gumbo. If you like the neighborhood feel, may I suggest DiBella's. Great family owned Italian grub. It is on the same street as Shrimp 'n Stuff, but about 8 blocks to the east (31st and Ave O). Everything on the menu is good. At some point you will have to try the steak DiBella. This isn't your standard Texas Rib Eye. It is served in a dish with a red wine sauce to die for. While you are at it go ahead and top that bad boy with lump crab meat.

I should also mention Sonny's Place. I practically grew up in that place. We know the owners. Heck half of Galveston knows Jr. They used to let me fry french fries when I was a kid. It is located on 19th street just two blocks south of Broadway. Nothing but locals and great bar food. Gotta watch out for the UTMB medical students though. They can pack the place, but that is usually only Thursday night.

The menu is great. My favorite growing up was the chili-cheeseburger...mmm.

The menu has grown since then. They offer gumbo and mufalettas on a limited basis. You can't go wrong with anything.

They also have the best shuffle board table on the island.

Sonny's "Behave or be gone".

I fly in this Saturday. I might have to give them a visit. It's been about a year now.
