No storms shown on the 00z or 06z GFS. For those keeping score at home, that's now three consecutive runs with no hint of any storm. Of course, the posters who popped in here to drop ominous screenshots of single model runs a couple days ago didn't come back to give that update, so I figured I would do it.

I'm not smart enough to look at models (or even where to find them). I just check NHC every morning and they have it as 30% chance it forms in the next 7 days.

The latest round of models from the GFS, Euro, and ICON all show something developing in the eastern greater antilles mid next week now. The GFS brings it into the Gulf and the Euro and ICON both turn right into the atlantic. Will be interesting to see if it persists into subsequent model runs. The fact that all three models show something is different from what the GFS was showing by itself over the last couple of days.

CMC also shows it going into the Atlantic. New GFS 18Z is currently running.

Maybe wait until there is a tropical cyclone actually forming or it has a name before going over every model run for the next 7 days

The GFS model runs 4 times a day, 6 hours apart and it takes several hours to run and post. They use greenwich mean time or "zulu" time, So the 18z is the 6pm zulu time run of the model. Central standard time is 6 hours behind gmt, so when you see 18z, it is noon in Texas. The 18z run is just finishing posting on Tropical Tidbits right now. When you see the indivisually posted frames from the models that say valid for 15Aug24 18z, that means it is a snapshot of what the model is predicting for noon on August 15th.

When you have travel plans to the Caribbean during hurricane season, there is value in being aware of what may be coming so you can start making alternate plans ahead of everybody else. I have no plans to act on anything this far out, but it is useful to know what you may need to keep an eye out for in the coming days. With all three models showing a storm forming out there 5-7 days from now, it is much more likely than what only the GFS was showing for the gulf 10+ days out earlier this week.

18z GFS shows it going through the T&C and then turning north over the Bahamas now. good chance it will be a fish storm relative to US landfall.

Weirdo won't even be back to take the L. Won't hear from him again until some model shows a storm hitting Texas 14 days out.

It's low season price wise, if there is not a hurricane around the sea conditions for diving are usually dead flat calm with excellent visibility, and with most of the resorts on some of the smaller islands closed, the island is very uncrowded. Plus with water temps 85-87F, you can dive in nothing but shorts and a rash guard. You just have to be aware of what might be coming and be willing to be flexible if you need to make last minute changes.

You can make fun of it, but it is a great way to get really good deals if you are willing to be flexible with your travel dates to accommodate changes that may occur if a storm develops before you head down. The resort we are going to is the only one on the island (with what I believe is the best diving in the Caribbean) that stays open during late August and September. A week long 3 dive/day package with all meals included that is normally $3000 per person is available for $2200 instead. So not only do you get a great price, you get the whole island and the best dive sites all to yourself.

If they do have a storm coming while you are there, the national airline adds emergency flights to get everybody off the island and back to the states, so you aren't going to be stranded there if a storm develops after you already arrived.

I did when we first started diving, but mostly we just go back to Little Cayman. Way too easy and relaxing.

Bonaire is so far south that it is out of the usual hurricane zone. It's a great dive spot.

Little Cayman is kind of the opposite of Bonaire. Mostly boat diving vs mostly shore diving. But it is super easy boat diving. You set up your gear once and the crew handles it after that. The diving is all from 42 or 46' Newtons. All moored dive sites, no current to speak of most of the time, and no requirement to follow the divemaster. The north side of LC has the Bloody Bay wall, where the wall starts off at about 20-25' and drops almost straight down several hundred feet. So you can do a wall dive and finish your dive doing a safety stop on top of the reef under the boat. Super easy diving, great vis, and really good food at the resort. Only two smallish resorts on an island that is 7 miles long by about a mile wide.

It and Cayman Brac are also pretty much the only islands in the Caribbean where SCTLD has not started impacting the reefs yet. My only advice is not to go between about late October and late January. The wind blows out the north side fairly often during that time and the south side diving is good, but doesn't match up.

I love the Caymans for diving. It is the only diving the Caribbean that reminds me of SE Asia. And I am totally in on going in the off season. We have done that several times. The nice thing is there is also very few people from the northeast to deal with.
