Ike had 200+ deaths. 84 in Texas
The only metric Beryl leads in is incompetence.
Minor storm with major problems.
As stated above, Ike, Rita, etc went in East of Houston. Bolivar and just East of Bolivar. With the counterclockwise winds, this is the huge difference. Since 1983, ONLY Beryl and Alicia have gone in West of Houston, giving the whole Houston area the worst part of the hurricane. Rita and Ike both laid waste to the Beaumont area. Alicia and Beryl both laid waste to the Houston area.
Prior to Alicia in 83, Carla also went in west of Houston.
Thankfully, Houston still hasn't gotten a huge cat 5 hurricane come in on the same track as Beryl. Can't imagine the devastation.

The storm surge you mention with Ike wiped out the Bolivar peninsula, High Island, and the mostly uninhabited huge ranches North and East of High Island- White, Pipkin, and others to the East.

At least CenterPoint is giving us frequent updates with reliable restoration schedules.

I live near Kirkwood and memorial and lived few streets away during Ike. During ike i had 70+ mph sustained winds and lots of tree damage. For beryl we had 30-40mph sustained with some occasional gusts up to 70mph and some small tree branches, Yes beryl had worse track as we were right on edge of the eye wall but the damage is night and day difference. For ike my yard was half full of big tree limbs as was everybody else on my street. For beryl i had two trash can of small limbs and 5 big lawn bags of leaves and i had it worst on my street. Yes Beryl was major event and lots of damage but to compare the two is like apples and oranges.

Crazy thing is, I had worse tree loss in heights from derecho than either hurricane. (Was also only time I was frightened something may happen to me or house)

Have to think beryl damage would have been worse in heights if derecho had not blown through.

By the way, I'm not trying to make this a contest. Genuinely interested in peoples experiences and It was interesting to see that post from Herzog about the wind from each storm

I can't help but notice the irony of you taking offense to someone pointing out that some people would rather complain than take action themselves to better their situation and then, in the same breath, complain that no one has offered to help you.

We must be talking about a different Beryl than the one I remember.

You know, I definitely overreacted. It's been a long week. I just really was not a fan when I said I don't have the luxury of being able to pack up and leave and was told he didn't buy that and played the "my generation was different" card. That's one of my pet peeves and it rubbed me the wrong way big time.

As far as the help thing goes- I'm mainly frustrated with some family members and wasn't referring to people on here. That's a different story in itself. Again, it's been a really bad week and I think last night I just reached a breaking point. But it really rubbed me the wrong way to be told "yeah I don't buy that" when I said I didn't have the luxury of being able to pack up and leave. That seemed really unnecessary. Some of us are a little strapped financially and can't afford to spend over a week in a hotel room right now. Maybe that's on me for not doing as well as everyone else.

Just like real estate, it's all location, location, location.

For my personal impact I'd rank the storms this way:

1)Alicia in Kingwood (trees down everywhere, including one on our house, a week without power and hot as hell)
2)Beryl in Richmond (Lots of branches and trees down in neighborhood, no power for 34 hours)
3)Ike in Katy (never lost power)

Hang in there. It's frustrating but it will get better. There have been, and will be, much worse events at some point in each of our lives.

As has been mentioned already, there are plenty on this thread, myself included, that are willing to help if you need something.

Thanks. My specific circumstances in this situation go beyond just not having power unfortunately. I don't want to give personal details- but the best thing anyone can do to help is to just say a quick prayer. Whether y'all "buy it" or not.

Definitely not our experience with Beryl. The amount of trees down around where I live (Spring) is incredible. Trees that survived last June storm, and May derecho were no match for Beryl. In a 3 block radius of our house, at lease 20-25 huge trees down. And that's just what I could see from walking on the thru roads in our neighborhood. I'm sure many more on the dead-end streets. 10 trees laying across the main road that runs north/south in our subdivision. One house 3 blocks from me had THREE trees laying on it. Gas station awning at the exit to our neighborhood torn to shreds, huge brick signs (like you see at subdivision entrances) knocked over or shifted off their pedestals. And they weren't knocked over by trees....strictly wind.

I apologize. Sincerely. Sucks that family dynamic is in play.

In these situations the old adage "You never know what is in somebody's cup until it is tipped" ring true. Family dynamics certainly doesn't help.

During Ike I had my 5 year old son, my wife (who was near the breaking point) and my elderly Dad at my house. I had no power. My Mom was at her place with no power as well.

I had a sibling who had power and lauded it over everyone's head. Wouldn't offer help or even a respite for our parents. Not even refrigerator space for my Mom My Dad got power day 3…..my Mom left and got a hotel….and I finally bugged out of town day 5 for 1 night just to get away from the craziness.

I again apologize

I hope everything works out. It will get better

Nearing 96 hours. Only linecrew seen was on Tuesday. Power lines still hanging in the streets in 77009.

But Centerpointless is doing an incredible job according to several obstinate posters.

We've seen zero in our neighborhood.

I go to my office to intercept FedEx/ups and have driven around there. Zero trucks.

For Derecho it took 5 days for crews to show up in Oak Forest (office). So maybe they'll arrive today.

At 9:30 I'll cross the century mark.

In aggregate, CP has restored power to what could be considered an impressive number of people, but when an individual's situation is binary it's hard to get excited about 1.4MM restored when you're one of the 875k still in the dark.

ETA: the neighborhood gas station where I've been topping off my gas cans with no lines was out of power again this morning. Luckily it was before 6 am so the one down the street that's had a bit of a line wasn't busy.

Just a heads up as some of us approach 100 hours on our portable generators, it's probably time for an oil change if you haven't already done one. Also, don't neglect your spark arrestor. On a whim, I inspected mine yesterday and found it about 90% clogged. A few minutes with some solvent and a toothbrush then a soapy water rinse and compressed air restored it.

No one likes her. Not the Republican establishment, not the Democrat Mayor.

Leads me to believe the problem is likely the woman that has never previously had a full time job, and was a part time translator when she was elected to basically the CEO job of the biggest county in the state
