And no, nothing have been proven wrong on costs. You've and others have made up nonsense and general statements that we all know aren't true.

And this, my friends, is called cognitive dissonance.

How much longer will you be waiting on the generac installation?

You're gonna spend $15-20k.

Speaking of which...lets do some basic math.

Per this article: https://www.khou.com/article/news/news-explainers/the-why/houston-power-lines-buried-why-not/285-fc0cf7a6-50e5-497f-96c9-065c0e01c33b#:~:text=The%20company%20found%20it%20would,make%20its%20way%20to%20customers.

Its $2.5 million/mile and 28,000 miles of overhead infrastructure or $70 billion total. No one believes we need to do 100% of the infrastructure, but lets use that as worst case. It would cost each house hold roughly $25,000 or roughly the cost of your generac. That's worst case, and not a realistic scenario.

But then we get to the more obvious answer and note that a bond paid back over years will easily cover that.

Plus we all agree we don't need to do 100% of the infrastructure and the $2.5 million estimate is out of California, and is likely inflated because of that.

And all this math is before we factor in the economic losses to businesses, and people who can't work. Plus the chaos this is causing at hospitals and people who will die from this. That number becomes even more palatable then.

So we land saying, yes it's expensive, but not beyond what people like you are paying just to have standby.

Can it be recouped without major changes to our utilities? I would bet so.

Anybody had any luck with getting power back today? Parts of WB5 got it back yesterday, but I'm assuming that was the easy stuff. I'm thinking about taking a drive around the neighborhood to see if there are any signs of crews working.

CenterPoint has been dead silent today.

I can assure you this "hoarding" and "all the dumbasses" is not as prevalent as you think.

Take it from someone who waited nearly two hours for gas yesterday.
Did you get your power back on, 15? We got ours last night and I meant to check on you. Today I have a client from another country telling me how disappointed she is in me that I couldn't finish her project because of "some storm".

I had a GSX-R in college, and after moving back to Houston, I decided I valued living more than riding, so I switched to doing track days, and I bought one of those to use and it is the best gas can I have ever had. I had 5 gallons in it that I gave to my FIL Monday night and it's still going strong. It's yellowed over the years, but I will never buy one of those government ****ed it up via regulation red cans again.

Anybody in Kingwood know where there's reliable gasoline?

My dad said HEB has it, but long lines...the junky CenterPoint map showed the front of kingwood may be doing better on power.

He's got about a days worth of gasoline before he's got to venture farther out to find more.
Yea....the panicky toilet paper crowd is back at it again...only it's gas this time. Dumbasses.

What an insanely ignorant statement here.
No it isn't. If people who don't need gas would calm the fck down and let the people who actually need gas for generators get gas.....

3 years ago there were dumbasses hoarding toilet paper when they already had plenty....making it impossible for people who really needed it to get it.

Use your head a little and think about what I'm saying.
half the stations have power, half the stations have gas, but a lesser amount have both. so the lines double or triple at the places that have gas and power.

also many of places where the tankers load the gas are out of power, creating longer wait times for them to make deliveries which compounds the problem.

just personal experience, but the biggest issue with all the off-season prep is storage. i had a window unit sized for the master boxed up and ready to install if we lost power for an extended period, but while it wasn't being used it was just taking up space.

so having room for all this stuff is definitely a limitation and needs to be considered.
My immediate thought is prepping for what we know will be used will force many of us to declutter the garage from unnecessary chit that the kids have grown out of. A small corner of the garage can be dedicated to hurricane prep where a shelf could be built to house a window unit, a tote full of cords, some gas/propane, and have the generator slide in under the bottom shelf. If the wife *****es, just wait to hook up the generator and let her know that is what life would be like without that little corner and the space it takes up.

I just left Dayton and they have gas, fast food, and plenty of traffic at a standstill. There is a Fuelmaxx at 146/FM 1413 just east of Grand Parkway that has gas and no lines. I am sitting in the parking lot and there is a tanker here refilling them.

Can't echo this enough.

We have 5, 3, 19 months, and 2 months at home. Zero chance we were riding this thing out short of having basically a whole home solution installed (we didn't).

We have been at the JW in San Antonio for the last two days doing exactly as you described
Nice humblebrag about how much sex you're having and how many sex trophies you got.
If it's the JW Marriott hill country, it's more of a humblebrag about $ cuz last I checked, those rooms were $1200 per night this week.

Yep. For 3 nights worth of money he could have set up a large portable generator tied into NG and his box to power the entire house.

But it's not really about that as you've mentioned.

What yall need at a minimum:

Interlock
50amp hook up
Natural gas tap w/ quick connect (quick connect not shown here)
Nat gas generator (I retrofit mine from gas only) w/nat gas hose and 50amp electrical cable
Portable AC w/stout window exhaust adapter

AgLiving06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you've done all the interlock connections and nat gas hookups.

Get a generator big enough to run your AC...It's only marginally more expensive and hugely beneficial

After the derecho I had an interlock installed 2 weeks ago on my breaker panel. It's a huge game changer being able to power all the 110 circuits in my house.
I am going to research and explore some portable generator options.

All I really need to provide power to:
-Master Bedroom A/C Window Unit (need to buy)
-Refrigerator/Freezer
-TV/Router
-Cell phone chargers
-Couple lamps/lights

Unsure, but you can get 50' electrical cables and 50' nat gas hoses, so maybe meet in the middle?

If you guys are running generators, make sure you have CO detectors in your house. My mom has had her generator for four years. It ran during a the freeze in 21 and after the derecho, both for extended periods of time, without any problems. For some reason, her CO detectors are going off this time around. Fire department called out and she did in fact have CO in the house. Had to shut the generator off.

I haven't seen any rainfall totals. I feel pretty certain we got more than 5" down in Kemah. Guess the winds overshadowed the rain.

Like anything else, it depends on the capability and burn rate of the generator and the load you will be applying.

Yep. Direction of winds and how far it is from the house matters.

Hell, I take a detector with us when we travel now.

I don't know about all the efforts today, but I can say after speaking with TDEM and Centerpoint about a work related matter they are still focusing on first responders, hospitals, seniors, etc. but its very disorganized.

They also thought 8 of our properties had power because 4 plus an office did and they were all showing as active/power on. I said, "With all due respect I am standing at the breaker and it is 0-F-F OFF.

I think they specifically mean today. Lots of progress was made yesterday, especially yesterday afternoon. What was the number from last night/this morning vs. now?

I'm running all of that currently off of a 3,000 watt Generac that is burning around seven gallons of gas per day. As much as I like the idea of upgrading to something bigger that could power more of the house for $1,500 (generator plus AC) and the morning run to refill my gas cans is hard to beat.

Having same problem at my parent's house right now. CO is getting through vent holes in the soffit. Going to duct tape trash bags over the soffit over the generator and try to re-direct exhaust flow away from house from generator itself.

First, bigger is mostly better except if space is an issue.

I'm currently running a 5,000 (6,000 peak) with:

2 fridges
2 freezers
1 8,000btu A/C
Several fans
Chargers
And a few other small things

I've not run the calculations but that's what I am able to run right now and have since Monday

This is what we are thinking too. Portable to power our window unit, fridge, etc.

Any suggestions appreciated, looks like Honda is the gold standard.
