I'm considering something similar. Ours is on the driveway so that we can keep back windows open and I'm worried it's going to walk away.

Tomball 2920 gas stations have power. busy lines, but they are running.
gas stations in 2nd ward also seemed to be up and running.
filling up gas cans just in case is silly. filling up your car because it might be hard to later is just being prepared.
The only silly thing is not understanding how things work, yet insist on telling everyone about it.
To run a 12k portable on a decent load, it takes close to 15 gallons of gas a day. Older generators more. There is no just in case.
Never said anything like that....simply said there are, without a doubt, people consuming right now who don't really need to and are making it more difficult for those who do. Why is that so hard to imagine and understand? If you don't think this is correct than you've got a much more idyllic view of people than I do.htxag09 said:
So you really believe that a significant amount of people who don't even own a generator, and likely don't own gas cans, are buying them and filling them up just for ****s and grins?
Seriously. The last thing anybody wants is a nasty letter from Brenda and the HOA on an unkempt yard after a hurricane.BowSowy said:

I understand what you're saying. I guess I'm more critical of people who are "in the way" right now and don't need to be because I am consciously trying to be more mindful of consumption and trying to stay out of the way because I know a lot of people have it pretty rough.texasaggie2015 said:

Did you get your power back on, 15? We got ours last night and I meant to check on you. Today I have a client from another country telling me how disappointed she is in me that I couldn't finish her project because of "some storm".texasaggie2015 said:
I can assure you this "hoarding" and "all the dumbasses" is not as prevalent as you think.
Take it from someone who waited nearly two hours for gas yesterday.
I think you are likely correct. I'm trying to have a more forgiving mentality but I am very cynical by nature.texasaggie2015 said:

Those people do exist, but they are a very small percentage of people who are waiting. There are also probably many who are buying gas for themselves and family or neighbors who are unable to go or decided it was best for 1 person to go get gas for everyone vs going on their own and adding more vehicles, which many would take as hoarding.92Ag95 said:I understand what you're saying. I plan to do this in the very near future. We are moving here in the next year or so, which is why I didn't want to splurge on a whole home generator or even a transfer switch setup. Now I am thinking about buying a portable generator in the next week or two once things "normalize" along with a window unit so that I can at least have one cool room, refrigerator, tv, cell phone chargers, etc. goingcone said:
it probably is worth having a collected wisdom post about what you need to have installed and ready in your personal situation in order to make being without grid power in the summer tolerable for 5-7 days
it seems like the absolute key is you need A/C in at least one room so you can sleep and recharge
everything needs to flow to that point

To "hurricane proof" a city this large is ridiculous.
Some things can be done such as a state law requiring transmission line ROWs to be cleared of trees. Both in public and private property. Along with a hefty enough fine for landowners who don't comply including the right of the state to enter your property, cut the trees them bill you/place lien on your home.
That will not go over well but that's the level of effort that would greatly reduce outages. But if winds are able to knock down steel major transmission towers who knows what else will happen to smaller poles.
Undergrounding is expensive as ****. I don't want to pay .40/kwh.
The best anyone can do is be prepared. I thought I was and I wasn't, so changing prep plans. Turns out we're on the same local circuit as a new firestation and we were restored Monday evening. During the didgeridoo event we were restored 3 days after, then a transformer blew and only my block was out for another 2 days.
And teah, as a Cat 1 this was a small event. I can't even imagine what a 3+ would do. Everyone needs to wake up.

Do you think the toilet paper thing 4 years ago was a completely different situation? Hurricane vs. what was being reported as a global pandemic that sounded like we were going to be dropping like flies if we didn't stay inside for long periods of time.92Ag95 said:Do you think the toilet paper thing 4 years ago was a completely different situation? Yes, because there was fear the federal government would be (and did) forcing business to shut down across the country with no real open date in sight from "the most deadly virus in history." This is a localized issue from a hurricane. Drive to Liberty or to Brookshire and life is probably pretty normal.92Ag95 said:Do you think the toilet paper thing 4 years ago was a completely different situation?
