I don't normally drink a lot of coffee/caffeine each day but I've tripped my daily consumption these past few days. I'm comfortable sleeping but constantly worried about generator or something else happening has me on edge and not sleeping worth a crap. I'm ready for this to be over like all of you…

We kind of got power back at the shop in 77061 by Hobby Airport.

Issue is we have 277/480 but a leg or two is down. We got shop lights at 277V. Nothing else, no AC.

Had 51 volts in the receptacles, down to 31, then 16. Hoping it's a Centerpoint issue and not our transformers. I know we'll be way low on priority if it's the transformers.

Anybody in Kingwood know where there's reliable gasoline?

My dad said HEB has it, but long lines...the junky CenterPoint map showed the front of kingwood may be doing better on power.

He's got about a days worth of gasoline before he's got to venture farther out to find more.
I've heard Dayton and Liberty are good places to go. Bit of a drive, but may be worth a shot instead of sitting in line.

I got some at the old citgo at 494 and Northpark this morning at 6:30. He needs to either be prepared to sit in line for a long time or take a drive to Dayton or liberty.

Get out early and refuel. Make sure he has plenty of cash since many places only take cash and only have Super Premuim available.

Might try the truck stops on Baytown. They had gas and diesel yesterday afternoon and lines weren't too bad.

I know we've seen lead times for certain equipment (like transformers) go way up since COVID and the Ukraine war. You think that has any impact here?

That's an odd one.

If you're have 3-phase run to your shop, then transforming it yourself, you may have a single phase out. Could be on either end of the line.

Yea....the panicky toilet paper crowd is back at it again...only it's gas this time. Dumbasses.
Huh? People need gas to power generators. I don't see how this is remotely the same as having enough TP to keep the knot clean for a year. Dual and Tri fuel generators are awesome, but majority run on gasoline only, and it'll run through several gallons a day. Are people supposed to keep 100 gallons on hand just in case?

I've been thinking about the "this is only a Cat 1" comments and comparing this damage to Ike. I'm sure there will be much more about this with better analysis, but I think the way Beryl maintained it's strength through the Houston Metro area allowed it to punch much higher than a Cat 1. I have wind data at IAH Beryl and peaked at 55 mph. Ike peaked at, you guessed it, 55 mph. Ike had 3 hours over 50 mph while Beryl was only 2.

I know there will be much better ways to look at this, but I wanted to point out that part of the reason this feels like Ike (cat 3/4) is because it was like Ike as it hit our major populations.

Not that should make anyone feel better, but hopefully explains what we are dealing with a little bit.

I think the fact that most of Houston was on the dirty side of the storm contributed to this. Lots of rain folllowed by strong winds for 8 hours is a recipe for downed trees
I wonder how much the spring rains and saturated grounds played into this as well. My yard looks better than it has in years and I haven't turned my sprinklers on since winterizing them in November.

The one thing I really don't get is people waiting in lines backed out on roads when they can just drive 10 minutes further.

I'm using my truck as a generator so have fueled it each day. Doesn't need it necessarily but better safe than sorry. Met my wife in Katy this morning to give her a few supplies and drove right into a gas station to fill up.

I work on the eastside, from 610 to BW8 almost every station is open with little lines. Sams Club is also a good option for the members.

I sent the wife and kids with her parents. Other cousins are there so the kids are entertaining each other fine.

I'm staying at the house to run the generator and keep fridges cold, keep an eye on things, etc. I have a couple portable ac units (thanks Ag07), but may need to relocate to a kids or guest room tonight, though. Negative of big rooms and tall ceilings….

No idea how or why those of yall without generators are doing it. Gtfo of dodge and get a hotel…..

This. Get out of town. I became obsessed with Centerpoint and when power would return after Hurricane Ike. I get it. At that time I felt like I had to take care of a lot of stuff….family, house, etc.

Best decision I made was day 5 without power was to pack everyone up and head to San Antonio.

This is what vacation days are for….get a beer on the riverwalk….look at the Alamo….get some rest…get out of Houston for a bit.

I was going to suggest hopping around 99 to Dayton as well. They got power back quickly and don't have as many people looking for generator fuel.

I checked a 3 phase disconnect this morning. Had 277 on one leg. Two of the others were throwing weird voltages.

We're now up to enough voltage that random things are turning on in the office and one light is flashing. Hopefully that means they're making progress and it's not on our side.

To "hurricane proof" a city this large is ridiculous.

Some things can be done such as a state law requiring transmission line ROWs to be cleared of trees. Both in public and private property. Along with a hefty enough fine for landowners who don't comply including the right of the state to enter your property, cut the trees them bill you/place lien on your home.

That will not go over well but that's the level of effort that would greatly reduce outages. But if winds are able to knock down steel major transmission towers who knows what else will happen to smaller poles.

Undergrounding is expensive as ****. I don't want to pay .40/kwh.

The best anyone can do is be prepared. I thought I was and I wasn't, so changing prep plans. Turns out we're on the same local circuit as a new firestation and we were restored Monday evening. During the didgeridoo event we were restored 3 days after, then a transformer blew and only my block was out for another 2 days.

And teah, as a Cat 1 this was a small event. I can't even imagine what a 3+ would do. Everyone needs to wake up.

Went back and looked at some old messages. I think this will be a new record for a continuous outage in my hood.

Freeze was right at 40 hours (we suffered extra because Centerpoint forgot to flip our circuit or some BS like that).

Storm last June was 46 hours.

We are at 36 now, but I doubt power is back on by tomorrow morning. 9 am will be 48 hours.

19 days for Ike.

5 days for the direcho.

If you're measuring in hours, it's not worth tracking.

Fact that direcho resulted in 5 days outage is comical enough. That storm was a typical May gully washer in DFW when I was a kid.

The only comical thing is people who are completely ignorant insisting they have a clue. We were ecstatic getting power back that quickly. The damage was much worse than this hurricane and entire blocks of power lines and poles were just gone.

I had the same problem from Derecho.

It's a blown fuse somewhere on CenterPoint's circuit. Like you said, it's caused by low voltage on 1 of your 3 legs.

Very low priority for CenterPoint so be patient.

No it isn't. If people who don't need gas would calm the fck down and let the people who actually need gas for generators get gas.....

3 years ago there were dumbasses hoarding toilet paper when they already had plenty....making it impossible for people who really needed it to get it.

Make sure you turn off the disconnects to your AC units. The low voltage on 1 or 2 legs of a 3phase AC unit will damage the compressor.

I seriously doubt that's what's causing the backups. The "lemmings" are people who have jobs and places to go and have to get gas on their normal gas schedule, but there are now thousands of people also trying to fill up gas cans.
