Mine is fine since the power came back at 3:15 this morning. It even worked for that 10 minutes around midnight that we had power.

It's not that they don't know how, it's they know people don't want the rate raise that would be needed to do it.
Main transmission lines need to be in right of way with nothing that can fall into lines. That isn't perfect, but it will help.
All new neighborhoods need buried lines. The cost to do it up front and coordinate with utilities is easier then. Then go back and fix problem areas. Hell tell people if they bury lines and their power goes out they get first prioriry

Tachus has been awesome. We had a brief outage Monday night around 9 that lasted 5 minutes. Other than that, it's been working just fine.

I switched to Tachus the day they finally installed the line to my house. I was on DSL before because both services will work assuming you have power on both ends.
DSL is based upon the old copper lines and that has outages measured in hours over years and fiber needs way less power, hence the small generac at stations. My dad used to design communication systems, so i got to learn this by proxy.
During the ice storm we had internet due to DSL and the interlock.
If you're in kingwood or woodlands and can get them, move to Tachus.

I've been thinking about the "this is only a Cat 1" comments and comparing this damage to Ike. I'm sure there will be much more about this with better analysis, but I think the way Beryl maintained it's strength through the Houston Metro area allowed it to punch much higher than a Cat 1. I have wind data at IAH Beryl and peaked at 55 mph. Ike peaked at, you guessed it, 55 mph. Ike had 3 hours over 50 mph while Beryl was only 2.
I know there will be much better ways to look at this, but I wanted to point out that part of the reason this feels like Ike (cat 3/4) is because it was like Ike as it hit our major populations.
Not that should make anyone feel better, but hopefully explains what we are dealing with a little bit.

She hit harder than 55 around downtown.
It was 90 in my bedroom last night. I wasn't in there, I was downstairs on an air mattress in front of our window unit, but it's going to get worse everyday. We can't live like this for a week or more.

I just moved into the hood. My power came on around 345-4pm, but a transformer blew around 9:30pm. Another long hot night.atmtws said:
Got power back in 77009 around 4:30. Made a few circles around the neighborhood throughout the day and never once saw a CP truck. Did see multiple Public Works trucks though clearing downed trees from the streets. Hang in there everyone!

It's not that they don't know how, it's they know people don't want the rate raise that would be needed to do it.
This probably isn't true, but additionally, there are a lot more factors that need to be considered anyways.
Such as all the business throughout the city that currently are closed due to no power. How much of an economic hit is Houston taking right now because of it? How many workers who are hourly aren't being paid right now?
If we look at it purely on an inconvenience to homeowners, that misses the bigger issue of an economy at a standstill for an undetermined amount of time while we all sit without power. I bet that alone overcomes most extra cost factors.
But even if we don't go to that extreme...we as a city have normalized losing 100k-500k customers to outages in our normal storm events. There is something seriously wrong that our grid can't handle routine storms, let alone a hurricane.

I would think from Kingwood head east you would have more luck to get gas.

Yep. We had a transformer fuse blow right before the storm hit. I talked to the CenterPoint guy and he said he'd fix it, but it would probably blow again.
Much of my neighbor has power back (including my neighbor). There's zero damage to the poles that would power my house, so it's probably that fuse again...Who knows how long CenterPoint will take to go fix it.
Only fortunate thing (maybe) is the CenterPoint update says the outage at my house is over 100 customers, so that "should" put us up higher on the priority list.

I was going to say this. My Mom who lives in Atascocita said the neighbors were going to Dayton for gas.

agree with this. ((For the majority of Houston)) Beryl felt as bad as Ike. Obviously for peak impact, storm surge what we got was way less than what Bolivar got for Ike.

Edit: and we both know the truth. This gets put to the vote, it passes easily. There are massive amounts of lines that can be buried that don't cost massive amounts of money.
We were on Suddenlink and would have an outage every month or so, and calling them to get any kind of fix would be a 2-3 day out appointment. As soon as Tachus was available, I signed up and haven't had any regrets. Hell, I signed up on their site to get the needed number of interested parties to get them to come out and install it. I almost put a sign in my yard like many around me.
I've had 1 outage with them since I've had them, and when I called their support number, some dude in The Woodlands picked up. He had me go through the typical restarting of the modem and router, and then he did some things on his end and determined it was their issue. I was fully expecting someone to come out in a few days, but he had someone out there that afternoon to fix it. Dude drove up, rooted around the green box in the yard near the street and had it up and going in about 5 minutes.
My neighbor across the street is still on Suddensuck and came over yesterday to see if Tachus was working. He's going to be switching as soon as things get back to normal.

I think the fact that most of Houston was on the dirty side of the storm contributed to this. Lots of rain folllowed by strong winds for 8 hours is a recipe for downed trees
