I'm gonna reiterate Uchi again. If I'm gonna get a free expensive meal, this is where I'm going. You can get a steak anywhere. But unless you're rolling in some serious dough, Uchi is a place you go maybe once a year or two. If you haven't been there, just sit by the chef's table and let them bring random bites out to you (omakase). Theyll give you like 10 different dishes. Everything is absolutely amazing. There's just something unique and different about this place compared to other sushi restaurants
There's an Uchi in downtown Denver.

This popped up on my news feed this morning but it doesn't go into detail on what drove him to want to leave J-Bar-M

I've actually wondered why Denver and Colorado food is so mediocre. Even in nice towns like Breckenridge it is not very good. None of the places would survive in Houston.

For some reason Colorado's idea of authentic local cuisine seems to be Chicago style deep dish pizza.

I forget the name of the place but there's a little pizza joint on the way from my sister's in Denver to her in-laws' place in Breck in Idaho Falls that's really damn good. But that's about it.

The place with the super thick crust and they give you honey? Has a mining theme i think? That place is so good.

That's the one.

Anyone used to hang out at the big easy? Years and years ago id catch some blues and zydeco bands there and tie one on. Good times were had.

Is/was that the sorta divey place right off Kirby not far from Rice Village? So many places we used to frequent before the Mrs. and I moved to the burbs to breed that a lot of them sort of blur together now.

-Gallant Knight
-Velvet Melvin
-Marquis
-Alice's Tall Texan
-Volcano (I think that's the name of the place on Bissonet)
-Blanco's
-Lizzard Lounge
-Sammy's on Main

And I can't believe I'm brain-farting but what was the icehouse that had the Texas-shaped table?

Solid list. I would add The Tavern on West Grey and the Social Pub on Washington for my regular hangouts back in the day.

no better place to get your car broken into then get offered drugs at the McDonald's drive through next door.

Also, don't forget the venerable Timberwolf Pub

Correct. It was Kay's. It's gone, along with the Tall Texan, the knight, Blancos and Sammy's. Marquis is still there but it's not the same since they fixed it up. Volcano is still cool.

My old haunts were

Cecils
Griffs
Big easy
Catbirds
Rudyards

There were a few others but I cant recall these days, and of course any time there was a good show at one of the several great venues in that area I was there. Good times.

Georgia James should make the list
Bludorn is super trendy right now

If you insist on Sushi, hidden omakase, MF sushi, or Kata Robata

I still somehow have never been to Rainbow Lodge.

My opinion, which is worth what you paid for it, Georgia James is not good/worth the price. There are easily half a dozen options that are better and cheaper.

Edit: I only went when it was 1/5th, not the stand alone restaurant, but based on that experience I don't intend to go back.

This is surprising to me. We hit all of the 1/5th iterations a couple times each and they were all outstanding. And Georgia James a few times, it was amazing as well.

That being said, I still preferred the OG Underbelly to all of them. That was next-level. Especially the first time I went, but the changing menu made for an amazing meal/experience each time.

I'll just say we were severely disappointed the one time we went, mainly with the preparation.

With that, it's just hard for me to justify going back when there are so many other options. And why would I pay near double the price for a wet aged steak at Georgia James compared to their competition who dry ages theirs?

Rainbow Lodge is dated as hell. Food is nothing special. Reminds me of an old hotel restaurant that's seen better days. Really pretty property though.

I thought the exact same thing the first time i went there and that was damn near a decade ago. If they haven't updated it at all I imagine it feels even more dated now.

COVID BS did her in. Her TABC license was up and bars were still not allowed to be open at the time so Alice bailed out. It was recently reopened as the Tall Texan II, by some jackass who didn't understand what made the original great. DO NOT GO BACK. Remember her as she was. The new version is terrible and will just piss you off. I ordered a lone star schooner(the only thing I've ever had from Alice's) and the bartender said "that will be $8" I said, I only ordered 1, not 4, And she said, yeah that's what they cost.

Not sure if the original topic is still in play, but I would skip steak and sushi and go with the diversity option -- hit London Sizzler, walk over to Himalaya, then roll toward Bellaire and then grab some Vietnamese and Chinese. Then finish it off with some illegal late night beers at a taqueria.

All bring back great memories...but the Aquarium was my first go to dive bar when I moved to Houston. Loved that place. Complete with the owner's old disabled husband living in the trailer in the back.
