RIP. Add Stag's Head, LZ's, Roeder's, and OG West Alabama Ice House.
Last time I went was just as the China Virus was starting to kick off...seemed pretty normal then, did they change it in the last two years? That's the type of place you just don't touch.

Lived in Montrose 22 years and I don't think WAIH has changed all that much IMO. And LZ's is much the same as it ever was, it's just called Dino's Den now. Yes not 100% as it used to be, but still a great neighborhood bar, and many of the usual suspects still hang there.

They've churched it up a little bit with nicer bathrooms, but otherwise still a great place to drink a beer. Plus the taco truck across the street is great.

Seriously? From the one OG small building only, nothing in the back but a basketball court and some people smoking weed and original OG owner (RIP) cooking free hot dogs on Fridays? They've made a ton of improvements/additions since then.. It's still a cool place... But way different IMO.

I was there with 2 other people, we were in one of the private rooms, had 1 bottle of wine, 3 cocktails, the menu was like 8 courses I think. Ended up being around $300 ( with tip I think, not sure exact number)

Altogether it was very very good. The service was good but I do think they brought out the courses so fast that I felt a little rushed, but we left when they were closing up so that probably impacted the speed of food delivery.

Great experience. Would definitely suggest for a private dinner/work dinner type thing. You have to reserve that in advance and ask for it and they limit what days they do it on.

OK yeah, certainly in that respect but I just mean it's not like it went the way of Marquis II or something. Seems similar to Last Concert Cafe in those terms, both have made improvements/changes, and the cultures have changed somewhat, but to me they still retain a lot of their original character.

so do they cook any of it at the table or is it all prepared when you do the fixed course menu? Sounds cool

Yeah I don't disagree with that. Still a great spot. Wish I was able to get there more often.

This, all this. I miss the charm of how minimal it used to be.

Bailing early with a few work buddies and heading up there on a nice friday afternoon for beer, hot dogs and live music was the mams. Maybe someone shares their joint with you in the back and a few hours later a lady comes by with tamales...or you've always got solid tacos across the street.

I think that's it. I don't remember much about it but I do remember I didn't like it.

Don't forget the 4 or 5 mangy dogs wandering around.

Or the open air pool table, usually commanded by the drug dealer with a very distinctive knife scar on his face.

And maybe I'm confusing a couple spots- is/was LZ's the place on Alabama not far from Hobbit Hole Cafe? There's another place called Lizard Lounge we used to hit but I'm sketchy on where that was exactly. I think it wasn't far from St. John's.

Yes, Lizzard's is on Sackett by St. John and Lamar.

LZ's was on Richmond, near Hobbit Cafe. Later became Mugsy's.

Komodo in midtown.

still there...on Sackett

That land has to be worth a pretty penny now.

I havent thought about lizards in a long time. Going there felt like being back at a frat party but slightly more expensive

I always called Lizzard's a frat house for 25 year olds.

Lizzard Lounge was a club on Richmond back in the 80s (and maybe early 90s). Definitely not the same as Lizzards.

I (used to) resemble that remark. Twenty years ago.

I was leaving the Taco Milagro up the road when that news helicopter crashed next to Lizzard's. Almost got t-boned by the cops racing there. I couldn't see 5 feet in front of me on Alabama due to the smoke.

I still have bad memories about Komodo. It seems like every time I was there I ended up carrying my wife and her friends out. Something about the place always turned them into buffoons. Did they serve ****** Sandwiches that I didn't see?

"Meet us at Komodo" and "We need you to pick us up at La Strada" -- two sentences that usually were a prelude to a nightmare. I'm glad I never have to hear them again.

And back to the original question -- the singular culinary experience in H-Tine was the Bo Ssam Pork Shoulder I cooked yesterday for Father's Day. Yes, I cooked on Father's Day because I didn't trust anyone else not to F it up.
