I know I'll fry for this but I've never really gotten the intense love of turnpike. I like their music decent enough but I can think of many other singer/bands shows I'd rather go to. Just my opinion and certainly not dismissing any of their fans.
To me, it's great music that is fun to listen to and to sing along with. Also, it's not the crap that took over country years ago where they all sing about "I took my baby do the river...in my truck...in her tight blue jeans...to drink some beer..." Are they a band that's going bounce around on stage and entertain? No. They're more on the George Strait side of the spectrum rather than the Garth. But IMO, the music is enough for them...although Evan was more animated than I have seen him in the past concerts I've gone to. As I said earlier, he looks to be having fun playing music again.

Everyone has their own opinions on music/artists. For me, I got heavily into Turnpike about 10 years ago when I used to go to the lake practically every weekend. There was just something about jamming out to them on the boat while chilling/drinking in the water with friends.
Same for me, signed up for Spotify in 2012 before a motorcycle trip to Alaska and they kept popping up in TX country playlists.

Amen brother... I just paid $800 for 3 tickets on Stubhub, and that was the best deal of all the ticket services...

Wow, that's crazy money for Turnpike. I was able to get all mine at Billy Bob's for well under face on a facebook page specifically for Turnpike tickets. But Billy Bob's had three shows so tickets were slightly easier, but not much.
Holy crap thats a lot of money. Not to mention it is just general admission.

For me what separates Turnpike and makes them a good listen is Felker's lyrics mixed with the instrumentals gives it an old soul type feel.

Hard to explain but it's a lot of what makes other guys Tyler Childers a good listen.

Right there with you on the lyrics. I love lyrics that don't necessarily make sense when you first read or hear them but as they simmer a bit you realize how great they are.

Long Drive Home and The Bird Hunters are great lyrics to me. The Bird Hunters might be their best. Wonderfully written.

Couple that with their sound and range of songs and it's amazing. Even the lyrics to Before the Devil Knows We're Dead for such a hard charging song are really damn good.

Not many bands can go from Before the Devil Knows We're Dead to The Bird Hunters. Turnpike can.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but what I love most about Turnpike is the way Felker can tell stories about situations about the human experience, not just girl+beer+truck+creek. He usually tells two stories at the same time, what he's thinking and what he's doing and just effortlessly bounces between them even if his mind is completely elsewhere. The high energy songs still have great lyrics and stories. Also the fiddle, cant forget the fiddle. Where turnpike really shines is the slower story telling songs. Dude can pick the smallest little event that we've all experienced and great a great song about it.

Unrung is just a little song about not calling out a buddy for dating a girl way younger than him because he doesn't want to ruin a relationship with his buddy.

Bird Hunters is about having your buddies take you out to do something distracting while you're getting over a girl, and they give you the trite encouragement while you're still not over it.

7&7 is a perfect song reminiscing about high school love long gone when your mind wanders while driving. Nothing trite, just full of things that make me laugh like using the phrase 'you're just interstate day dream' and ducking them at the grocery store. Dude wrote a song about what goes through your mind when you're just staring out a windshield.

Also, they got huge when I was in college so I spent a huge amount of time listening to their music while going through the same things and drinking with my buddies. Makes me wish I could get all of them back together and go play some 42 while drinking too much beer.

agreed. Someone compared TT to Cross Canadian Ragweed earlier, and while I loved Ragweed, their lyrics never interested me, whereas Felker tells great stories and knows how to turn a phrase.

Quote:

Well, Lorrie said her family used to have a little money

And they still act like they do

I think everyone knows this family

There's so much of that song that is relatable if you've ever spent any time in Texarkana or the surrounding areas in SW Arkansas / SE Oklahoma.

You also have songs like No Rent, which Evan says he essentially wrote the night before his aunt's funeral.
It's a slower song, but I think it's an amazingly written about someone passing.

Big fan of Pay No Rent. Unreal he wrote it on a whim the night before a funeral because everyone else was playing the Willie Nelson song. He said "eff it" I'll just write my own song for the service.

Crazy as it sounds I used it for my Mother/Son dance at my wedding last year. I couldn't find a song I really liked and love what "In my heart you pay no rent" means. The band was just playing 90 seconds so I re-worked the lyrics a tad and I thought it came out great.

The first verse isn't morbid at all. Just had to change one line along with make 21 to 42 since that's what we call dominoes. Coupled that with the end chorus and it worked really well. At least in my mind.

I couldn't figure out a wedding gift for my mom because she doesn't like "stuff." I printed and framed the updated lyrics. She thought it was wonderful and meant a ton to her. She's got it displayed in her house with the other wedding photos.

So yeah. Big fan of Pay No Rent.

I've watched that video before, it's great. But unfortunately I think one of the most telling parts is right at the 6:51 mark where Evan says his aunt is the only one he could drink tequila with at 11am on a Tuesday morning. Right after he says that, you can see the guitarist look towards Gabe then put his head down and then Gabe makes a frustrated gesture. It seems there was a lot of band tension in the room during this video and my guess is it was based around Evan's drinking.

What time is everyone getting there? Doors open at 6 so the opening act should start 7-7:30. Turnpike should start around 8:30. Am I think about this right?
