My guess is that Abbott says the masks are working to make our metrics better and we have to stay vigilant. Maybe open up things to 75% and this will take him an hour to get to the actual point of the press conference

yeah maybe not use a battle where everyone sacrificed their lives for the greater good to say we should reopen the schools, sports, and bars.

More teachers/bodies in the building than necessary to teach in person students increases the chances that it all unravels and we end up back at home in November.

Except that's not what's happening in a lot of other places with almost 100% in person students

I'm not making excuses, but logically, it makes much more sense to ask someone who actually has a mask to put it on than it does to ask someone who does NOT have a mask to put one on.

Unless you're prepared to deny the person with no mask entry into the establishment - which the employee probably did not want to do.

Regardless of how anyone feels about masks, to knowingly go to an establishment without one (darn well knowing they are required) is a huge jerk move. People like that are just asking for a confrontation - that frontline employees simply should not have to deal with, and most won't. And the people with no masks know this. It's a stupid game of chicken.

I'm not arguing against that. I also don't set the risk tolerance of HISD leadership which just closed 10 facilities due to coronavirus cases. They are showing it won't take much to pull that lever.

What is the upside to virtual teachers reporting in person? I evaluate there is no upside but I posted to try and figure out what I am missing.

Downside seems clear - one school shut down, even as a fluke, derails a few hundred in person students who have to go home.

Yeah, give it 2 weeks and the whole house of cards comes tumbling down!!

SBISD has been in person for 2 weeks so far. Total cases including staff and students is up to 15! They need to think about grandma and grandpa and shut this thing down soon!

What we measure as significant/important is completely irrelevant.

15 cases could have HISD temporarily shutting down a half dozen schools since they don't even need to know how many are infected: Lathan said she did not know the total number of positive cases at the properties.

So they make a precedent that any number of cases gets a facility shut down and anyone in contact sent home.

Then they make a policy requiring extra people to come in to the building.

Seems odd is all, I'm not advocating to follow MY plan, I'm trying to figure out if they are following THEIR plan.

So is HISD for sure offering in-person starting Oct 19, or is that still undecided?

My kindergartner is still scheduled for 10/19. Luckily she's a Teams ace and barely needs any help from her proctor grandmothers and can get on the right Teams calls with help from iPad alarms.

No clue if this is a reputable source, but it says Abbott will keep bars and tubing companies closed while letting restaurants open to 75%.

Bars are essentially open now with creative accounting and cooking the books with fake food purchases. (Thumbs down for making them do this)

Yep. It's still ridiculous that they have to pay ~$1k just to swap out a piece of paper. They'll almost all have to reclose 3 months after paying the $1,000 "protection $" to TABC because they won't end up having less than 51% of sales from alcohol.

And I also am waiting for TABC and the state to audit tax collections and accuse bars of avoiding gross receipts tax by dropping alcohol prices to try to comply with the 51% rule that has been forced on them.

Meanwhile, Nashville authorities have been caught conspiring to hide data in order to keep bars closed.

Bars seem to not GAF right now and I can't say I blame them. 6 months in with seemingly no end in sight, no matter what the numbers say.

At this point, what else do you have to lose as a bar owner? Just throw the fine in with the other liabilities and declare bankruptcy with the other 60% of restaurants that are closing.
