What started out as a quiet, sunny Sunday afternoon at the ballpark turned into one of the most electric softball games at Davis Diamond this season.
No. 11 Texas A&M showed why it’s one of the best teams in the country, beating No. 14 Mississippi State 10-9 in comeback fashion to sweep the series and earn its ninth win in a row.
“This is who we are,” A&M head coach Trisha Ford said. “I think we fight, you know? We’ve talked about that over and over. It’s something that I take a lot of pride in… That’s why I feel like we’re the Fightin’ Texas Aggies. We don’t give up.”
The 12th Man held its breath in the first inning, as the Bulldogs punched a 6-0 lead before the Aggie offense had a chance to hit.
Two bases-loaded walks, four hits and a grand slam by Bulldog’s second baseman Xiane Romero gave State a flicker of hope early on Sunday.
With their backs against the wall, the Aggies did what they do best, putting up nine runs on nine hits in the second inning to answer the Bulldog brigade.
“We’ve come into this season saying, ‘We’re never out of the fight,’” the power-hitting Mya Perez said. “I feel like we really stand on that. We back each other up and know that we all have each other’s backs.”
An RBI single by Kennedy Powell and a bases-loaded walk to Tallen Edwards scored two for A&M before Perez stepped up to the plate in the second.
With bases loaded and no outs, the All-American crushed a grand slam on the second pitch she saw, tying the game 6-6 in the blink of an eye.
The bubbles continued to fly as an RBI single by Kelsey Mathis brought Annsley Groce across, giving the Aggies a 7-6 lead.
With two out and one on in the second, Paislie Allen joined in the fun and hit her second home run of the series, bringing the advantage to 9-6 in the second.
“Allen is one of the most wiry, athletic kids on our team,” Ford said. “She enjoys life and is out there having a good time. She’s super athletic, you can tell in the outfield… I don’t know that you could have a better day, and she played great for us in the outfield.”
Allen later bunted to tally the Aggies’ 10th run in the fourth inning. On Sunday, she went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Despite the power surge from the Aggie offense, Mississippi State rallied in the seventh, scoring three runs on two hits to tighten the score 10-9.
With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Bulldog third baseman Nadia Barbary popped one up to left field for Allen to catch, ending the game and securing the sweep.
In the circle, Grace Sparks struggled to find the strike zone, allowing four hits, six runs and two walks while recording just two outs. She was relieved by Taylor Pannell, who walked three batters and struck one out in 1.1 innings.
In the third inning, Sidne Peters entered the circle and earned the win to push her record to 13-4. She spun five innings, allowing five hits, three runs, one walk and striking out three batters.
“I thought she threw much better today,” Ford said. “I just think she’s growing into who she really is. That’s my job as a coach. I can visually see what she could be, and I think she’s doing a heck of a job.”
A&M is now unbeaten vs. Mississippi State across all sports in 2025-26, with baseball on deck.
The Aggies now take on South Carolina on Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in Columbia.
